Civil Project Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a civil project manager in California?
The standard California path starts with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, followed by gaining qualifying experience toward licensure as a Professional Engineer through the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists. Most employers in California expect candidates to hold or be actively pursuing a PE license, as many public agency contracts require it. Adding a PMP credential strengthens your candidacy for senior project management roles, particularly with Caltrans contractors and large municipal agencies.
How much do civil project managers make in California?
Civil project managers in California earn a median of about $120,910 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $69,180 for the lowest 10% to over $188,560 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire civil project managers in California?
Employers hiring civil project managers in California right now include BKF Engineers, Kimley-Horn, and Tetra Tech, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense network of public infrastructure programs and private development projects means hiring is ongoing across both large engineering firms and regional specialty contractors throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most civil project manager jobs?
Irvine, Los Angeles, and San Francisco have the most civil project manager openings in California. The concentration in these metros reflects the scale of ongoing transportation, water infrastructure, and land development programs in greater Los Angeles and the Bay Area, while San Diego's military installations, port expansion, and municipal growth drive consistent demand in the south.
Are there remote civil project manager jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Civil project management is inherently tied to active construction sites, field coordination, and agency meetings, which limits full remote work. About 30% of civil project manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those arrangements typically apply to planning, estimating, or early-phase design coordination rather than active construction oversight roles.
How can I get hired as a civil project manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a project engineer or design engineer at a California-based civil firm or public agency, where you support senior project managers before taking on independent responsibility. Large California employers like Caltrans, the Los Angeles Department of Public Works, and major engineering firms such as AECOM and WSP run structured new-graduate programs and associate engineer tracks that develop project management skills over time. Sitting for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam early and building AutoCAD Civil 3D proficiency will distinguish you against other candidates without field experience.
Where can I find and apply to civil project manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to civil project manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your experience and location, and apply directly.
