Education Program Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a education program manager in California?
Most education program managers in California start with a bachelor's degree in education, public policy, or a related field, then build experience through teaching, coordination, or program support roles in schools or nonprofits. A California teaching credential strengthens candidacy for district-based roles, while a master's degree in education leadership or nonprofit management is common at senior levels. Many professionals move into program management from classroom teaching, instructional coaching, or grants administration within California's K-12 or community college systems.
How much do education program managers make in California?
Education program managers in California earn a median of about $156,260 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $96,900 for the lowest 10% to over $274,960 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire education program managers in California?
Employers hiring education program managers in California right now include Stv, Microsoft, and Apple, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size means hiring comes from a wide range of organizations, including large unified school districts, University of California and California State University campuses, and edtech companies headquartered in the Bay Area.
Which California cities have the most education program manager jobs?
Los Angeles, Mountain View, and Cupertino have the most education program manager openings in California. Los Angeles dominates due to the scale of LAUSD and the density of workforce development nonprofits, San Francisco draws demand from edtech employers and foundation-funded initiatives, and San Diego benefits from its large network of community colleges and STEM-focused education organizations.
Are there remote education program manager jobs in California?
Yes, and more than many education roles. About 14% of education program manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that much of the work involves curriculum planning, data analysis, and stakeholder communication rather than daily in-person instruction. Roles tied to grant management, instructional design, or edtech product development are the most likely to offer fully remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a education program manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into program management from a classroom teaching or instructional coaching role, since California districts and nonprofits typically promote internally from those positions. Target AmeriCorps education service placements, program coordinator roles at California community college foundations, or associate program roles at edtech companies based in the Bay Area. Building experience with California's Local Control Accountability Plan process or managing a small grant project gives candidates a concrete edge when applying for their first manager title.
Where can I find and apply to education program manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to education program manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
