Project Site Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project site manager in California?
Most project site managers in California come up through field roles or construction management degree programs before stepping into a site management position. While California does not require a specific project site manager license, many employers expect candidates to hold or work toward a California Contractors State License Board credential, and the CSLB's licensing process involves passing a trade and law exam. A degree in construction management or civil engineering, combined with field experience and a PMP or CCM certification, is the combination that opens doors to site management roles in California.
How much do project site managers make in California?
Project site managers in California earn a median of about $133,160 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $82,100 for the lowest 10% to over $211,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project site managers in California?
Employers hiring project site managers in California right now include DoorDash, Colliers Engineering & Design, and Meta, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's scale of commercial development, public infrastructure spending, and clean energy construction means large general contractors, specialty subcontractors, and state agency capital programs all post consistently.
Which California cities have the most project site manager jobs?
Irvine, Sacramento, and San Francisco have the most project site manager openings in California right now. Los Angeles leads on sheer volume given its density of commercial, residential, and public works projects, while San Francisco and San Diego generate steady demand from tech campus construction, biotech facilities, and infrastructure programs tied to their respective regional growth corridors.
Are there remote project site manager jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 7% of project site manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which reflects the fundamentally on-site nature of managing active construction projects. The parts of the role most suited to remote work are pre-construction planning, submittal review, and scheduling coordination rather than day-to-day field supervision.
How can I get hired as a project site manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an assistant project manager or project engineer role with a mid-size California general contractor, where you work under a licensed PM and build direct site experience. Large California contractors such as Hensel Phelps, DPR Construction, and McCarthy Building Companies run structured associate PM programs that accept candidates with a construction management degree and limited field time. Completing OSHA 30 training and pursuing an entry-level CSLB classification accelerates hiring consideration at California contractors who require licensed supervision on their projects.
Where can I find and apply to project site manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to project site manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from employers actively hiring. Find the roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly through each listing.
