Assistant Project Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a assistant project manager in California?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or architecture, followed by entry-level field or office coordinator experience with a California contractor or developer. California does not require a state license specifically for assistant project managers, but earning a PMP certification through the Project Management Institute strengthens your candidacy significantly. For construction-focused roles, familiarity with California-specific permitting, CEQA processes, and the California Building Code is a genuine differentiator.
How much do assistant project managers make in California?
Assistant project managers in California earn a median of about $120,910 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $69,180 for the lowest 10% to over $188,560 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire assistant project managers in California?
Employers hiring assistant project managers in California right now include Taco Bell, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Amazon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large construction, infrastructure, and technology sectors mean hiring is consistent across both legacy general contractors and fast-growing tech-adjacent firms with major state operations.
Which California cities have the most assistant project manager jobs?
Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Diego have the most assistant project manager openings in California. Los Angeles drives volume through its massive commercial construction and entertainment infrastructure sectors, San Francisco reflects demand from technology campuses and urban redevelopment, and San Diego is anchored by defense contractors, biotech campuses, and ongoing public infrastructure projects that consistently require project support staff.
Are there remote assistant project manager jobs in California?
Yes, but they're limited. Most assistant project manager roles involve on-site coordination, subcontractor oversight, or field walkthroughs that cannot be done remotely. About 2% of assistant project manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate in the administrative, scheduling, and reporting functions of larger program management or technology organizations.
How can I get hired as a assistant project manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a project coordinator or construction administrative assistant role at a mid-size California general contractor or developer, where you support document control, RFI tracking, and scheduling before stepping into an assistant PM title. Large California builders like Webcor, Swinerton, and DPR Construction run structured associate programs and internships for candidates without experience. A California community college certificate in construction management or completing your PMP eligibility hours alongside an entry role gives you a concrete credential to show hiring managers.
Where can I find and apply to assistant project manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to assistant project manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across construction, technology, infrastructure, and commercial development. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly to the employer.
