Program Coordinator Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a program coordinator in California?
Most program coordinator roles in California require a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as public health, social work, education, or business administration. No single state-issued license covers the role broadly, but positions in health-related programs often expect familiarity with California Department of Public Health guidelines, and nonprofit roles frequently value a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from a California community college or university. Building experience through internships, AmeriCorps service, or coordinator assistant roles at California county agencies is the most common entry path.
Which companies hire program coordinators in California?
Employers hiring program coordinators in California right now include University of California - San Francisco, California State University, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large healthcare networks, UC and CSU campuses, and county social services departments are among the most consistent sources of openings year-round.
Which California cities have the most program coordinator jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego have the most program coordinator openings in California. Los Angeles and San Francisco drive volume through their concentration of county agencies, major health systems, and large nonprofit organizations, while San Diego's strong federal contract presence and biotech sector adds a distinct layer of program management demand that keeps it competitive alongside the larger metros.
Are there remote program coordinator jobs in California?
Yes, and more than many comparable roles. About 19% of program coordinator openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves documentation, reporting, and stakeholder communication rather than on-site service delivery. Grant administration, education technology, and statewide nonprofit programs are the sub-areas most likely to offer fully remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a program coordinator in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a coordinator assistant or program support role at a California county department, community health clinic, or UC or CSU campus, where hiring managers are accustomed to onboarding candidates who lack direct coordinator titles. AmeriCorps placements through California Volunteers offer structured, resume-building experience that many California nonprofits and public agencies treat as equivalent to paid experience. Earning a Certificate in Nonprofit Management or a project management credential from a California community college strengthens applications considerably for candidates without a directly relevant degree.
Where can I find and apply to program coordinator jobs in California?
