Project Architect Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project architect in California?
You become a project architect in California by earning licensure through the California Architects Board, which requires completing an NAAB-accredited architecture degree, finishing the Architectural Experience Program, and passing all sections of the Architect Registration Examination. California does not offer a separate title protection for unlicensed designers using the project architect title, so most firms require full licensure or active candidacy for senior project-level roles.
Which companies hire project architects in California?
Employers hiring project architects in California right now include HMC Architects, Colliers Engineering & Design, and MBH Architects, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's scale of public infrastructure investment, university expansion, and healthcare construction means large institutional clients and government-adjacent firms tend to post the most consistent openings year-round.
Which California cities have the most project architect jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Jose have the most project architect openings in California. Los Angeles drives volume through its entertainment, mixed-use, and civic construction sectors, San Francisco reflects continued demand from tech campuses and dense urban infill projects, and San Diego draws steady work from defense, biotech, and higher education institutions that maintain active building programs.
Are there remote project architect jobs in California?
Yes, but they're limited. Architecture is a predominantly hands-on discipline requiring site visits, consultant coordination, and in-person design reviews, so fully remote roles are uncommon. About 33% of project architect openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with the remote portion mostly covering schematic design, design development, and BIM coordination phases rather than construction administration.
How can I get hired as a project architect in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an architectural associate or project coordinator role at a mid-size or large California firm while completing your Architectural Experience Program hours toward licensure. Large California employers such as university system design offices, county public works departments, and healthcare systems like Kaiser Permanente run structured internship and new-graduate programs. Building a portfolio that demonstrates Revit proficiency, California Building Code familiarity, and a completed studio or internship project gives candidates a measurable edge at the screening stage.
Where can I find and apply to project architect jobs in California?
You can find and apply to project architect jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your experience and target location, and apply directly to the employer through the listing.
