To practice as a project architect in New York, you need a license issued by the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions through the State Board for Architecture. The path requires an NAAB-accredited professional degree, completion of the Architectural Experience Program, and passing all divisions of the Architect Registration Examination. Firms in New York City typically expect candidates to carry or be actively pursuing licensure before moving into a project architect role.
Which companies hire project architects in New York?
Employers hiring project architects in New York right now include Capgemini, LaBella Associates, and APD Engineering & Architecture, PLLC, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's density of large international firms, healthcare systems, and university capital programs means openings appear year-round across commercial, institutional, and residential project types.
Which New York cities have the most project architect jobs?
New York, Albany, and Brooklyn account for the most project architect openings in New York. New York City drives the overwhelming share of demand given its volume of large commercial, institutional, and residential development, while Albany and Buffalo generate consistent openings through state government capital projects, university expansions, and regional healthcare facility work anchored by major health systems based in those metros.

Yes, but they're rare. About 30% of project architect openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work depends on on-site observation, consultant coordination, and in-person design reviews. The tasks most likely to be performed remotely are production work, code research, and design development phases on projects that are still in early stages.
How can I get hired as a project architect in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an architectural intern or project coordinator role at a mid-size or large New York City firm, where you build construction document experience before transitioning to a project architect title. Firms like Gensler and large healthcare architecture studios regularly hire candidates from graduate programs at institutions like Cornell, Columbia GSAPP, and Pratt.
