Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist Jobs in Tennessee: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a clinical documentation improvement specialist in Tennessee?
The most direct path is to hold an active clinical license, such as a Registered Nurse license issued or endorsed through the Tennessee Department of Health, or a health information credential such as an RHIA or RHIT, and then pursue the CCDS or CDIP examination. Most Tennessee hospitals require at least two years of acute-care bedside or coding experience before moving into a CDI role, and completing an employer-sponsored CDI orientation program significantly strengthens candidacy.
Which companies hire clinical documentation improvement specialists in Tennessee?
Companies currently hiring clinical documentation improvement specialists in Tennessee include Innophos, Xai, and Erlanger, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Tennessee's high concentration of large health systems and regional hospital networks means CDI openings appear consistently across the state rather than clustering in a single metro.
Which Tennessee cities have the most clinical documentation improvement specialist jobs?
Memphis, Nashville, and Brentwood have the most clinical documentation improvement specialist openings in Tennessee. Nashville leads because it is home to the headquarters of several of the country's largest for-profit health systems alongside Vanderbilt University Medical Center, while Memphis and Knoxville support strong CDI demand through their own large acute-care campuses and regional referral networks.
Are there remote clinical documentation improvement specialist jobs in Tennessee?
Yes, and more than most clinical fields. About 67% of clinical documentation improvement specialist openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how thoroughly EHR access has made chart review location-independent. Inpatient concurrent review roles are more likely to require on-site presence, while retrospective audit, coding quality, and risk-adjustment functions are the positions most frequently posted as fully remote.
How can I get hired as a clinical documentation improvement specialist in Tennessee with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is lateral movement from an inpatient coding, case management, or bedside nursing role at a large Tennessee health system such as HCA Healthcare or Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which run internal CDI mentorship and training cohorts for experienced clinicians new to documentation improvement. Earning the CCDS or CDIP while still in your current role, or completing a CDI certificate program, signals readiness and often qualifies candidates for CDI educator or associate specialist titles that Tennessee employers post specifically for those transitioning out of direct patient care.
Where can I find and apply to clinical documentation improvement specialist jobs in Tennessee?
You can find and apply to clinical documentation improvement specialist jobs in Tennessee on Migrate Mate, which lists current Tennessee openings across health systems, hospitals, and remote positions. Find roles that fit your experience and credentials and apply directly.
