Cloud Developer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a cloud developer in Virginia?
Virginia does not require a state-issued license to work as a cloud developer, so the path runs through education and employer-recognized credentials. Most Virginia employers, particularly those in federal contracting, expect a bachelor's degree in computer science or information technology alongside a vendor certification such as AWS Solutions Architect or Microsoft Azure Administrator. Candidates targeting Northern Virginia's federal market should also pursue a security clearance early, as many roles require at least a Secret clearance from the start.
How much do cloud developers make in Virginia?
Cloud developers in Virginia earn a median of about $136,460 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $83,350 for the lowest 10% to over $211,930 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cloud developers in Virginia?
Employers hiring cloud developers in Virginia right now include Booz Allen Hamilton, Visual Soft, and Google, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's concentration of federal agencies and defense contractors means many of these employers hire cloud developers specifically to support government cloud modernization and cybersecurity initiatives.
Which Virginia cities have the most cloud developer jobs?
Chantilly, McLean, and Winchester account for the largest share of cloud developer openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia anchors the market because of its dense cluster of federal agencies, defense contractors, and data center operations, while Richmond and Hampton Roads draw hiring from state government IT programs, financial institutions, and military-adjacent technology firms.
Are there remote cloud developer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 22% of cloud developer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the desk-based and infrastructure nature of the work. Roles focused on cloud architecture, DevOps automation, and application development tend to offer the most location flexibility, while positions requiring on-site access to classified government systems are typically in-person only.
How can I get hired as a cloud developer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an associate or junior cloud engineer role at one of Virginia's large federal IT contractors, which regularly hire new graduates into structured onboarding programs. Leidos, Booz Allen Hamilton, and GDIT all run early-career and campus hiring programs. Candidates coming from adjacent roles such as systems administrator, network engineer, or IT support can move laterally by adding an AWS Cloud Practitioner or Azure Fundamentals certification, which Virginia employers treat as a concrete signal of cloud readiness even without production experience.
Where can I find and apply to cloud developer jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to cloud developer jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across industries and seniority levels. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to each one.
