Professional Services Consultant Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a professional services consultant in Virginia?
Most professional services consultant roles in Virginia require at least a bachelor's degree in business, management, information systems, or a related field. Virginia does not issue a state license for general consulting, so employers focus on educational credentials, relevant certifications such as PMP or Six Sigma, and demonstrated client-facing experience. Building a record of project delivery in federal contracting or IT advisory is especially valuable given Virginia's heavy government services economy.
How much do professional services consultants make in Virginia?
Professional services consultants in Virginia earn a median of about $117,580 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $66,140 for the lowest 10% to over $174,700 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire professional services consultants in Virginia?
Employers hiring professional services consultants in Virginia right now include Amazon Web Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's concentration of federal agencies and defense contractors means many of these employers specifically seek consultants with government-facing program management or advisory experience.
Which Virginia cities have the most professional services consultant jobs?
The cities with the most professional services consultant openings in Virginia are Arlington and Herndon. Northern Virginia dominates the distribution because of its proximity to federal agencies, the Pentagon, and the dense cluster of defense and IT contracting firms headquartered there, while Richmond draws demand from financial services, healthcare, and state government clients.
How can I get hired as a professional services consultant in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is targeting analyst or associate consultant roles at Virginia's large federal contractors and consulting firms, which regularly run structured new-graduate programs. Employers such as Booz Allen Hamilton and Leidos hire entry-level analysts from Virginia universities and rotate them across client engagements. Adjacent roles in project coordination, business analysis, or government program support are common lateral moves. Earning a PMP or Six Sigma Green Belt credential early strengthens a candidate's profile considerably.
Where can I find and apply to professional services consultant jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to professional services consultant jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find roles that match your background and target metro, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
