Commercial Lender Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a commercial lender in California?
Most commercial lenders in California start with a bachelor's degree in finance, business, or accounting, then enter the field through a credit analyst or junior underwriter role at a bank or credit union. California does not require a dedicated commercial lending license, but any lender originating commercial mortgage loans must register with the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System, administered at the state level through the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation.
How much do commercial lenders make in California?
Commercial lenders in California earn a median of about $81,770 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,460 for the lowest 10% to over $169,040 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire commercial lenders in California?
Employers hiring commercial lenders in California right now include Warner Music, Apple, and Cannon Design, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's density of large regional banks, credit unions, and CDFI lenders means there is consistent hiring demand beyond the national money-center banks, particularly in commercial real estate and SBA divisions.
Which California cities have the most commercial lender jobs?
The California cities with the most commercial lender openings are Los Angeles, Cupertino, and Irvine. Los Angeles and San Francisco dominate because of their concentration of corporate headquarters, commercial real estate activity, and large regional bank operations, while San Diego contributes steady volume through its technology sector and growing small business lending market.
Are there remote commercial lender jobs in California?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely analytical roles, since commercial lending depends heavily on client relationships and on-site property or business evaluations. About 0% of commercial lender openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote work most available for credit underwriting and portfolio management functions rather than origination.
How can I get hired as a commercial lender in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a credit analyst role, which large California institutions such as Union Bank, Pacific Premier Bank, and California Bank and Trust use as a structured pipeline into commercial lending. Many California-based credit unions and community development financial institutions also hire credit trainees and associate relationship managers. Completing a California community college business finance certificate or pursuing NMLS registration early gives candidates a meaningful advantage over other entry-level applicants.
Where can I find and apply to commercial lender jobs in California?
You can find and apply to commercial lender jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across commercial banking, credit unions, and specialty finance. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
