Align your portfolio to Apple's silicon stack
Apple's Software Systems Engineer roles increasingly center on Apple Silicon integration, low-level OS work, and firmware. Before applying, build out projects or contributions that demonstrate embedded systems, kernel-level, or driver development experience relevant to their hardware-software co-design model.
Target teams hiring through Apple's university pipeline
Apple recruits heavily from university programs for systems roles, which opens F-1 CPT and OPT pathways before any H-1B filing. If you're finishing a graduate program in computer engineering or systems software, apply during fall recruiting cycles when these pipeline roles go live.
Confirm your role qualifies as a specialty occupation
USCIS scrutinizes H-1B petitions where job titles are broad. Software Systems Engineer at Apple typically requires a specific degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering. Make sure your offer letter reflects that requirement explicitly, not just a general preference.
Use DOL prevailing wage data to benchmark your offer
Apple's LCA filings with the DOL set the prevailing wage floor for your specific role and location. Cross-check your offered salary against DOL's Foreign Labor Certification Data Center before signing, so you know whether your compensation clears the wage level required for sponsorship.
Account for H-1B cap timing in your start date negotiation
If you're subject to the H-1B cap, your earliest possible start date is October 1 following the April lottery. Build this into your offer negotiation with Apple's recruiting team early. Cap-exempt candidates, such as those transferring from a qualifying research institution, can start sooner.
Browse Apple's sponsored roles on Migrate Mate
Finding roles at Apple that actively support visa sponsorship for Software Systems Engineers takes filtering that standard job boards don't offer. Use Migrate Mate to surface open positions at Apple verified for sponsorship, so you're applying where your visa situation is already accounted for.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Apple sponsor H-1B visas for Software Systems Engineers?
Yes, Apple sponsors H-1B visas for Software Systems Engineers. The company files petitions through both the standard cap lottery and, for eligible transfers, outside the cap entirely. Apple works with experienced immigration counsel to prepare petitions, and the role's degree requirements in computer science or computer engineering align well with USCIS specialty occupation standards.
Which visa types does Apple commonly use for Software Systems Engineer roles?
Apple sponsors Software Systems Engineers across several visa categories: H-1B for most international hires, E-3 visa for Australian citizens, H-1B1 visa for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican engineers under qualifying USMCA occupations, and F-1 OPT and CPT for students currently enrolled or recently graduated. Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 and EB-3 is also available after a period of employment.
How do I apply for Software Systems Engineer jobs at Apple?
Apply directly through Apple's careers site, but use Migrate Mate first to identify which Software Systems Engineer openings at Apple are confirmed to sponsor visas. Apple's systems roles often require passing a technical screen focused on low-level programming, OS internals, or hardware-software interfaces before reaching the recruiter stage, so prepare for that before submitting.
What qualifications does Apple expect for Software Systems Engineer roles?
Apple's Software Systems Engineer positions typically require a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering. Hands-on experience with operating systems internals, firmware, device drivers, or embedded software is heavily weighted. Familiarity with Apple's platforms or experience working on hardware-adjacent software puts candidates in a stronger position during technical interviews.
How do I plan my timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship to work at Apple?
If you're cap-subject, USCIS opens H-1B registration in March, with selection results in April and an October 1 start date. Coordinate your offer acceptance and notice period with this calendar. If you're on F-1 OPT, you can begin working before October 1 under the OPT authorization period, and Apple can bridge you through the cap transition if your OPT covers the gap.
