INTRODUCTION
At Apple, new ideas have a way of becoming phenomenal products, services, and customer experiences very quickly. Imagine what you could do here. Bring passion and dedication to your job and there's no telling what you could accomplish.
We are a team of software engineers developing web-based tools and native applications for Apple teams. Our work empowers Apple engineers and researchers to build the products that inspire and delight millions every day.
We're looking for a Site Reliability Engineer who thinks like a systems engineer first and an operator second. You won't just keep things running - you'll shape how our platform evolves. Our team operates 50+ services across Kubernetes and AWS, handles sensitive health and research data, and is ramping up many architectural shifts: new service-to-service auth patterns, event-driven pipelines, and a move from on-prem to cloud-native infrastructure. We need someone who gets excited about that kind of work, can reason about distributed systems at the design level, and is a strong enough communicator to bring the rest of the team along.
DESCRIPTION
The Human Engineering Software team builds tools used across Apple for user studies, research participant management, health data collection, and privacy-preserving analytics. Our infrastructure spans Django backends, Kubernetes clusters (self-hosted and AWS), PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka, Elasticsearch and a growing set of internal service integrations.
This role is engineering-forward SRE. You'll spend as much time designing systems as operating them. You'll work closely with our full-stack engineers to improve how services communicate, how we observe production behavior, and how we ship changes safely. You'll have a seat at the architecture table - we want you proposing solutions, not just implementing them.
Responsibilities
-
Platform & Reliability Engineering - Own the reliability of our Kubernetes-hosted services across AWS and self-hosted clusters: deployments, scaling, capacity planning, certificate management, and secrets rotation. Design and implement SLO-driven observability: define meaningful SLIs, build dashboards that answer "is the system healthy?" not just "is the pod running?" Drive incident response and blameless postmortems.
-
Distributed Systems & Architecture - Partner with the architecture team on system design: service-to-service authentication (OIDC, gateway auth), event-driven messaging (Kafka), API gateway patterns. Design the infrastructure layer to make architecture proposals real in production. Evaluate and recommend new tools, patterns, and platforms and write code when it's the right tool, whether that's a deployment operator, a health check service, or a data pipeline component. This isn't a YAML-only role.
-
Engineering Enablement - Make the team efficient; own CI/CD pipelines and GitOps practices, owning tests to verify production tools are functioning correctly, build self-service automation, evolve our observability and security posture, and communicate infrastructure decisions clearly across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
-
BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience, with 5+ years of experience in distributed systems.
-
Deep experience with Kubernetes in production - cluster operations, networking, storage, troubleshooting.
-
Strong proficiency designing and operating services in AWS (EC2, EKS, RDS, S3, IAM, VPC).
-
Hands-on infrastructure-as-code experience (Terraform, Helm, or equivalent).
-
Proficiency in at least one backend language (Python, Go, or similar) - you can write production services, not just scripts.
-
Experience with CI/CD pipeline design and GitOps workflows.
-
Strong understanding of networking fundamentals: DNS, load balancing, TLS, firewall rules, service discovery.
-
Excellent communication skills. You can explain a complex system to a room of engineers who didn't build it.
-
Experience building internal automation or self-service tooling (Slack bots, CLI tools, workflow orchestration) that reduced manual operational work.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
-
BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience, with 7+ years of experience in distributed systems.
-
Experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar messaging systems).
-
Experience with service mesh or API gateway patterns (Istio, Envoy, Kong, or similar).
-
Familiarity with Django/Python web applications and their operational characteristics (Celery, Gunicorn, PostgreSQL).
-
Experience with observability tooling beyond basic monitoring: distributed tracing, SLO frameworks, structured logging.
-
Background working with sensitive data (health data, PII) and associated compliance requirements.
-
Experience leading incident response and building on-call culture.
-
Contributions to internal or open-source infrastructure tooling.

Align your credentials with Apple's hardware focus
Apple's Reliability Engineering teams prioritize hands-on experience with failure analysis, HALT/HASS testing, and statistical lifetime modeling. Frame your resume around specific methodologies and tools, not just job titles, so your background maps clearly to their hardware product cycles.
Target postings tied to specific Apple product lines
Apple structures Reliability Engineering roles by division, such as Mac, iPhone, or silicon. Applying to a posting explicitly tied to a product line signals product-specific fit, which carries weight in Apple's structured hiring process and speeds recruiter routing.
Clarify your visa category before the offer stage
Apple sponsors several visa types for this role, and the right pathway depends on your nationality, current status, and degree field. Knowing whether you need H-1B, E-3, or TN before offer conversations lets you discuss timelines accurately and avoid surprises during the filing process.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open Reliability Engineer roles
Apple posts Reliability Engineer positions across multiple divisions and locations simultaneously. Migrate Mate filters these by visa sponsorship eligibility, so you're only seeing roles where your work authorization pathway is actively supported rather than manually reviewing every listing.
Prepare for Apple's technical loop with reliability-specific scenarios
Apple's engineering interviews for Reliability roles test your ability to design accelerated life tests and interpret Weibull distributions, not just general problem-solving. Preparing case studies from your own hardware experience gives you a concrete foundation for each interview round.
Understand the Labor Condition Application timeline for H-1B filings
For H-1B sponsorship, your employer files a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before USCIS adjudicates the petition. At Apple's scale, internal legal processes add lead time, so align your expected start date with the full LCA-plus-petition window, not just the USCIS processing estimate.

Find Reliability Engineer at Apple JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Apple sponsor H-1B visas for Reliability Engineers?
Yes, Apple sponsors H-1B visas for Reliability Engineers. Given the specialized hardware and systems knowledge required for these roles, they qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS guidelines. Apple's legal team handles the full petition process, including the Labor Condition Application filed with the DOL, but you'll need to be selected in the H-1B lottery if you don't already hold H-1B status.
How do I apply for Reliability Engineer jobs at Apple?
Apply directly through Apple's careers site, using specific search terms like 'reliability engineer,' 'product reliability,' or 'hardware reliability' to surface relevant postings. Each listing specifies the product division and location. You can also browse open Reliability Engineer positions at Apple filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate, which removes the guesswork around which roles support international candidates.
Which visa types does Apple commonly use for Reliability Engineer roles?
Apple sponsors H-1B, H-1B1, E-3, TN, and Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for Reliability Engineers. Australian citizens are eligible for the E-3, which has no lottery and renews indefinitely. Canadian and Mexican nationals can use TN status for qualifying engineering roles. F-1 OPT and CPT are also supported, making Apple a realistic option for recent international graduates in engineering programs.
What qualifications does Apple expect for Reliability Engineer positions?
Apple's Reliability Engineer postings typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field. Beyond the degree, Apple looks for demonstrated experience with accelerated life testing, failure mode analysis, and statistical reliability tools such as Weibull analysis. Roles in silicon or component reliability often require additional depth in semiconductor physics or manufacturing processes.
How do I plan my timeline if Apple is sponsoring my work visa?
The timeline depends heavily on your visa category. H-1B petitions are subject to the annual lottery, with a cap-subject start date of October 1, meaning you and Apple must plan around that window. E-3 and TN visas move faster and aren't lottery-dependent. For Green Card sponsorship through PERM, expect a multi-year process. Confirm your category and its timeline with Apple's immigration team as early in the offer process as possible.
