We’re looking for a passionate software engineering manager to join us on FaceTime, SharePlay, Phone, Voicemail, and more!
Our mission: create the best and most trusted way to have a conversation and share an experience when you can't physically be with the most important people in your life.
Description
This team shapes and drives FaceTime's private and secure calling experience. We do this by living on our software, developing defensible opinions on what to build and what to change, having empathy for the countless users in the world who rely on us every day, and protecting them from the people who would exploit that trust.
Responsibilities
- Leading a team of engineers that builds and ships features strengthening the security, privacy, and safety of FaceTime and Phone across iOS, macOS, and beyond.
- Identifying and driving improvements that protect users from spam, scams, and other abuse across our communication products.
- Growing engineers into technical leaders who can own complex, cross-functional projects independently.
- Making sound technical decisions across your team's area: balancing security improvements, user experience, backward compatibility, and release timelines.
- Shaping product direction by partnering with peer engineering teams, design, security engineering, product marketing, and senior software leadership to define what trustworthy communication means for our users, and then building it.
Minimum Qualifications
You care about helping others grow in their careers at Apple.
You have experience hiring, developing, and retaining a diverse team of engineers.
You prioritize building an inclusive team culture where everyone can be heard and the best ideas are the ones we pursue.
You know how to break down ambiguous problems into shippable projects and manage execution across release cycles.
You have strong communication and collaboration skills.
You have strong software engineering skills and can act as an arbiter for tough technical debates.
You aspire to take an Apple-wide perspective in making decisions.
You have experience shipping software on Apple platforms and can engage deeply with system architecture and design.
You have demonstrated experience using AI-assisted development tools to meaningfully accelerate engineering work and have helped your team adopt these tools at scale.
Preferred Qualifications
You have interest in or exposure to security and privacy topics, such secure coding practices, encryption, threat modeling. If not familiar, you have curiosity, drive, and ability to develop technical depth in security and privacy.
You have familiarity with networking systems: peer-to-peer, client-server, or low-latency communication architectures.
You have experience with secure communication protocols, especially in handling untrusted data or operating in adversarial environments.
You have interest in or experience with abuse prevention, anti-spam, or fraud detection in communication or platform products.
Pay & Benefits
At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Software Engineering Manager Jobs at Apple Jobs
Frame your engineering leadership for Apple's stack
Apple's Software Engineering Manager roles span iOS, macOS, silicon, and developer tools teams. Tailor your resume to show direct management of engineers working on embedded systems, frameworks, or platform software rather than generic agile delivery experience.
Target teams where Apple files LCAs consistently
Search DOL's Labor Condition Application disclosure data for Apple job titles before applying. Teams filing LCAs for Software Engineering Manager roles signal active sponsorship pipelines, helping you prioritize outreach and internal referrals where visa support is already established.
Confirm your visa category before the offer stage
Apple sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, and Green Card pathways for engineering managers. Know which category applies to your citizenship before interviews, because Apple's recruiting team will route your packet differently depending on whether you need cap-subject H-1B or a cap-exempt option like E-3.
Build your EB-2 or EB-3 case from day one
Apple's PERM-based Green Card process for Software Engineering Managers can span multiple years. Documenting your role's degree requirements and specialized duties early makes the PERM audit process smoother if Apple initiates sponsorship after you're onboard.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active sponsorship roles
Apple posts Software Engineering Manager openings across multiple internal divisions simultaneously. Browse Migrate Mate to filter Apple's current openings by visa type so you're applying to roles with active sponsorship support rather than positions that may be restricted to existing work authorization.
Negotiate your start date around H-1B cap timelines
If you need a cap-subject H-1B, USCIS only accepts petitions starting April 1 for an October 1 employment start. Align your offer negotiation with this window early, and discuss premium processing with Apple's immigration team to lock in your status before the fiscal year begins.

Does Apple sponsor H-1B visas for Software Engineering Managers?
Yes, Apple sponsors H-1B visas for Software Engineering Manager roles. The company works with immigration counsel to file petitions for both new hires and internal promotions into management. If you require a cap-subject H-1B, your petition enters the annual lottery with an April 1 filing window and an October 1 start date. Premium processing is available through USCIS if you need a faster adjudication decision.
How do I apply for Software Engineering Manager jobs at Apple?
Apply directly through Apple's careers portal or through Migrate Mate, which filters open roles by visa sponsorship type so you can identify positions where Apple is actively supporting work authorization. Apple's Software Engineering Manager hiring process typically includes a recruiter screen, technical leadership interviews, and a cross-functional panel assessing people management and engineering depth. Referrals from current Apple engineers significantly increase visibility.
Which visa types does Apple commonly sponsor for Software Engineering Manager roles?
Apple sponsors H-1B and H-1B1 visas for most nationalities, E-3 visas for Australian citizens, and TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering management roles. For long-term employees, Apple initiates PERM-based EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship. F-1 OPT and CPT extensions are also supported for candidates transitioning from academic programs into engineering management tracks.
What qualifications does Apple expect for Software Engineering Manager candidates?
Apple typically requires a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field, with many roles preferring a master's degree for H-1B specialty occupation purposes. Candidates are expected to have hands-on engineering backgrounds in Apple's core domains, including operating systems, silicon design, or developer platform work, combined with proven experience managing engineers across full product development cycles.
How do I manage visa timing when transitioning into a Software Engineering Manager role at Apple?
If you're changing from an individual contributor H-1B at another employer, Apple must file an H-1B transfer petition before your first day. You can start working as soon as Apple files the transfer petition, without waiting for USCIS approval, provided you have a valid prior H-1B approval. For cap-subject applicants joining fresh, the 60-day grace period after your previous employment ends gives you a narrow window to have Apple file before your status lapses.
