Build a hardware-focused portfolio before applying
Apple's Product Design Engineers are expected to show hands-on experience with DFM, tolerancing, and materials selection. Document projects where you moved a design from concept to manufacturable prototype, since that evidence directly maps to what Apple's hiring panels assess.
Target roles tied to specific product lines
Apple organizes Product Design Engineering by product family, iPhone, Mac, wearables, and accessories. Applying to postings that name a specific product area signals fit and increases your chances of reaching a hiring manager who can champion your sponsorship through internal approvals.
Clarify your visa category early in conversations
Apple sponsors multiple visa types for this role, including H-1B, E-3, and TN. If you're Australian or Canadian, flag your category during the recruiter screen so the correct LCA and petition process is initiated without delays that could affect your start date.
Align your offer timeline with H-1B cap deadlines
If you need an H-1B and aren't currently in a cap-exempt status, the USCIS registration window opens in March for an October 1 start. Coordinate your Apple offer and start date around this window to avoid a gap between your current work authorization and your H-1B effective date.
Verify your degree field matches specialty occupation criteria
USCIS requires that your degree field directly relate to the engineering work in the job description. For Product Design Engineer roles at Apple, degrees in mechanical engineering, materials science, or industrial design are the strongest fits. A degree in an unrelated field can trigger an RFE even for a well-matched candidate.
Use Migrate Mate to find open roles across sponsoring employers
Filtering for Product Design Engineer positions at companies with a verified H-1B, E-3, or TN sponsorship history saves significant time. Migrate Mate lets you browse open roles at Apple and similar electronics hardware employers filtered by the visa type you need.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Apple sponsor H-1B visas for Product Design Engineers?
Yes, Apple sponsors H-1B visas for Product Design Engineers. This role qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS guidelines because it requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related engineering or design field. Apple's immigration team handles LCA filing with the DOL and the I-129 petition, though timing depends on where you are in the H-1B cap cycle at the time of your offer.
How do I apply for Product Design Engineer jobs at Apple?
Applications go through Apple's careers site, where Product Design Engineer postings are listed by product line and location. Tailoring your resume to highlight hardware development experience, DFM, and cross-functional collaboration with manufacturing teams improves your chances of passing the initial screen. You can also browse current openings filtered by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate before applying directly through Apple's portal.
Which visa types does Apple commonly sponsor for Product Design Engineers?
Apple sponsors H-1B and H-1B1 visas for most international engineers, along with E-3 visas for Australian citizens and TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering categories. For longer-term pathways, Apple also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship. F-1 OPT and CPT candidates can typically start before a visa petition is filed, which is useful if your OPT is already authorized.
What qualifications does Apple expect for Product Design Engineer roles?
Apple's Product Design Engineer postings typically require a degree in mechanical engineering, materials science, or industrial design, plus hands-on experience with precision manufacturing processes, tolerance analysis, and prototyping. Familiarity with CAD tools like SolidWorks or PTC Creo is common. For mid-to-senior roles, experience delivering hardware products through full product development cycles and working with overseas contract manufacturers is strongly preferred.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take after receiving an Apple offer?
For E-3 and TN visas, the process from offer to work authorization can move quickly, often within four to eight weeks, since neither requires USCIS lottery participation. H-1B sponsorship takes longer because of the March registration window and October 1 cap start date. Apple typically works with outside immigration counsel to prepare the LCA and petition, and will coordinate your start date around whichever visa category applies to your situation.
