The WTE Quality team is looking for a Software Development Engineer in Test who combines strong programming and debugging instincts with a forward-thinking approach to AI-assisted engineering. This role is at the center of Apple's Car Key validation efforts - where critical thinking, tight collaboration, and modern tooling converge to ship features that millions of people rely on every day.
Description
As a Software Development Engineer in Test on the Car Key team, you will write, debug, and maintain the automation that validates Apple's Digital Car Key features across embedded systems and wireless protocols. You will work closely with development and quality engineers to identify issues, isolate root causes, and ensure that Car Key functionality meets Apple's quality bar. This role places a strong emphasis on leveraging LLM-based tools like Claude Code to accelerate development workflows, improve test coverage, and solve problems more efficiently. You will be expected to think critically about complex system behavior, collaborate effectively across teams, and continuously push for better ways to validate software at the embedded level.
Responsibilities:
- Write and maintain Python-based test automation that validates Car Key features across NFC, BLE, and UWB protocols
- Debug complex issues across embedded systems, isolating failures at the hardware/software boundary
- Leverage LLM tools (e.g., Claude Code) to accelerate test development, improve code quality, and streamline engineering workflows
- Analyze test results to identify regressions, patterns, and areas requiring deeper investigation
- Collaborate closely with development and quality engineers across multiple teams to drive issue resolution
- Engage with Objective-C and Swift codebases to understand system behavior and inform test strategies
- Contribute to continuous improvement of test infrastructure, tooling, and processes
- Participate in team planning and execution to meet quality milestones for iOS and watchOS releases
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of experience in software engineering with a focus on test automation, debugging, or system validation
- Strong programming skills in Python
- Proficiency in Objective-C and/or Swift
- Demonstrated experience using AI/ML tools and LLMs (e.g., Claude Code, coding assistants) to enhance engineering productivity
- Strong critical thinking and analytical skills with the ability to isolate issues in complex systems
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional team environments
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience testing or validating embedded systems
- Experience with automation frameworks for hardware/software integration testing
- Deep familiarity with wireless protocols including NFC, BLE, and UWB
- Experience with the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) Digital Key specification
- Proficiency with git, CI/CD systems, and development integration lifecycles
- Familiarity with prompt engineering and the ability to design effective LLM workflows for engineering tasks

Tailor your resume to Apple's stack
Apple's Software Test Engineer job descriptions frequently reference XCTest, Python automation, and hardware-software integration testing. Align your resume language to these specifics before applying. Generic QA experience won't differentiate you against a deep applicant pool.
Target roles in hardware-adjacent teams
Apple's strongest sponsorship activity for this role ties to hardware product lines, including iPhone, Mac, and wearables. Filter your search toward teams building device firmware or OS-level testing frameworks, where specialized engineering need is highest and sponsorship is most consistent.
Clarify your visa category before offer stage
Apple sponsors several visa types for this role. If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm whether your remaining OPT runway covers the H-1B cap-gap period. USCIS requires the H-1B petition to be filed before OPT expires to maintain continuous work authorization.
Prepare documentation showing specialty occupation evidence
USCIS scrutinizes H-1B petitions for Software Test Engineer titles more than for pure software development roles. Gather degree transcripts, course descriptions, and prior job records that directly link your computer science or engineering credentials to test engineering work specifically.
Engage Apple's recruiting process early in the cycle
Apple typically opens technical recruiting pipelines in late summer and early fall, aligning with H-1B cap-season planning. Applying after January reduces time for Apple's immigration team to complete the Labor Condition Application with DOL before the April filing window.
Search verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Confirming which teams within Apple are actively hiring and sponsoring before you apply saves significant time. Use Migrate Mate to filter Software Test Engineer roles at Apple by visa type, so you target open positions where sponsorship is already confirmed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Apple sponsor H-1B visas for Software Test Engineers?
Yes, Apple sponsors H-1B visas for Software Test Engineers. Because the H-1B is a cap-subject visa with a lottery, Apple's immigration team typically initiates the process well before the April filing window. If you're already in H-1B status with another employer, Apple can also file an H-1B transfer, which lets you begin work without waiting for a new lottery selection.
Which visa types does Apple commonly use for Software Test Engineer roles?
Apple sponsors H-1B, H-1B1 visa, E-3 visa, TN visa, and F-1 OPT for Software Test Engineer positions, as well as immigrant visa pathways including Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 and EB-3. H-1B1 visa is available to Chilean and Singaporean nationals; E-3 visa is exclusive to Australian citizens; TN visa covers Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering categories. The right category depends on your nationality and current status.
How do I apply for Software Test Engineer jobs at Apple?
Applications go through Apple's careers portal at jobs.apple.com. Search for Software Test Engineer and filter by team or product area. The process typically includes an online assessment, technical phone screens covering test design and automation, and onsite or virtual interviews that assess debugging, systems thinking, and coding. Prepare to discuss prior experience with automated test frameworks and hardware-software validation in detail.
What qualifications does Apple expect for Software Test Engineer roles?
Apple typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field. Beyond the degree, strong candidates demonstrate hands-on experience with scripted test automation, familiarity with continuous integration environments, and the ability to write test plans for complex hardware or OS-level features. Experience with Apple platforms such as iOS, macOS, or watchOS is a meaningful differentiator in the applicant pool.
How do I find Software Test Engineer jobs at Apple that include visa sponsorship?
Not every posting on Apple's careers site explicitly states which visa types are supported. Migrate Mate filters Software Test Engineer roles at Apple by visa sponsorship type, so you can confirm sponsorship eligibility before investing time in the application process. This is especially useful if you need a specific category such as E-3 or TN, where the role's job duties must align with the visa's defined occupation criteria.
