How STEM OPT works

STEM OPT is a 24-month extension of OPT for students with an eligible STEM degree. The student applies through their DSO and USCIS; the employer does not file a petition but must be enrolled in E-Verify and sign a Form I-983 training plan. The role must relate to the STEM degree, and pay must be commensurate with similarly situated U.S. workers.

Who is eligible for STEM OPT?

F-1 students are eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension if they have completed their initial 12-month OPT period, hold a degree in a STEM-designated field under the DHS CIP code list, and have a job offer from an E-Verify enrolled employer whose role directly relates to that degree field. The employer must be willing to sign Form I-983, the formal training plan submitted to the student's designated school official.

How much does F-1 STEM OPT cost?

F-1 STEM OPT is student work authorization, so there is no employer sponsorship fee. The student pays the USCIS filing fee for the work-authorization application, plus any costs their school charges. Fee amounts change from time to time, so check the current figure before you rely on it.

How do I get STEM OPT through a top employer?

To work for one of these employers on STEM OPT, confirm the employer is E-Verify enrolled and ask them to complete Form I-983, your individualized training plan. Your designated school official then recommends the STEM OPT extension in SEVIS, and you file Form I-765 with USCIS, which can be submitted up to 90 days before your current EAD expires. Once USCIS approves the extension, you receive a new EAD authorizing 24 additional months of work with that employer.
