DESCRIPTION & REQUIREMENTS
The Zhang Lab (zlab.bio) at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is seeking a Staff Scientist with deep expertise in proteomics and peptidomics to join our creative, diverse, and dynamic research team. This is a PhD-level position for someone who thrives on pushing the boundaries of what's possible — a scientist with the drive to lead projects from concept to execution, the creativity to develop novel approaches, and the track record to prove they can deliver.
The Zhang Lab is broadly focused on developing programmable therapeutics and working to improve human health and wellbeing. Central to this mission is our effort to interrogate the proteome, peptidome, and immunopeptidome — both to discover new bioactive molecules and to understand how therapeutic interventions and physiological changes reshape biology at the molecular level. We are looking for someone who will be a driving force in this work: a scientist who doesn't just run assays but builds them, who sees gaps in our capabilities and fills them, and who brings intellectual energy and rigor to everything they do.
The Staff Scientist will lead the development and optimization of quantitative and qualitative proteomic and peptidomic assays, including immunopeptidomic workflows, and will shape the direction of proteomics-driven research across the lab. This role demands a strong foundation in protein biology and chemistry, a sophisticated understanding of mass spectrometry-based approaches, and the initiative to identify new experimental directions and see them through. The successful candidate will be both a hands-on scientist and a strategic thinker — someone who can independently advance multiple projects while also elevating the work of those around them through collaboration and mentorship.
Proficiency with common proteomics data analysis platforms (e.g., PEAKS, FragPipe, DIA-NN, Skyline) is expected, along with comfort handling large datasets and performing rigorous statistical analyses of proteomics results. Experience operating and maintaining LC-MS instrumentation is highly desirable.
The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard provides an outstanding work environment characterized by diversity, innovation, and a strong commitment to work–life balance.
The Zhang Lab shares this mission, striving to foster a workplace culture that promotes diversity, intellectual curiosity, flexibility, and integrity. Our lab is a vibrant, fast-paced, collaborative environment where new ideas are welcomed and initiative is rewarded. Broad employees receive a generous benefits package — including a competitive salary, comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage, a retirement plan, and additional benefits — as well as opportunities for career advancement. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and optimization of proteomic and peptidomic assays, including immunopeptidomic workflows, to support the lab's research goals
- Drive assay innovation — identify unmet analytical needs and build new approaches to address them
- Perform and oversee proteomic and peptidomic sample preparation across diverse biological contexts
- Operate and maintain LC-MS instrumentation; troubleshoot and optimize instrument performance
- Process, interpret, and integrate mass spectrometry data using specialized software (e.g., PEAKS, FragPipe, DIA-NN, Skyline)
- Design upstream experiments in collaboration with lab members to maximize the scientific value of proteomic and peptidomic data
- Contribute to research strategy through proactive scientific thinking, team discussion, and cross-project collaboration
- Mentor and support junior lab members in proteomics-related techniques and analysis
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in molecular biology and protein chemistry, with a strong emphasis on mass spectrometry-based proteomics or peptidomics
- Demonstrated ability to independently develop, optimize, and execute proteomic or peptidomic assays
- Hands-on experience with LC-MS instrumentation and workflows
- A track record of scientific productivity and innovation — through publications, successful method development, or equivalent contributions
- Ability to critically read, interpret, and adapt scientific literature to inform experimental design
- Strong organization, documentation, and project management skills
- Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with a commitment to advancing shared research goals
The expected base pay range for this position as listed above is based on a 40 hour per week schedule. Broad provides pay ranges representing its reasonable and good faith estimate of what the organization reasonably expects to pay for a position at the time of posting. Target research and computational roles
Broad Institute's sponsorship activity is concentrated in scientific research, bioinformatics, and computational biology. Focus your application on roles that align with their core genomics mission, where visa sponsorship is a well-established part of their hiring process.
Understand the H-1B timeline early
Broad Institute sponsors H-1B visas, which means your start date may depend on the April lottery or a cap-exempt filing window. Discuss timing with the recruiter early so both sides can plan around USCIS deadlines without derailing your offer.
Highlight advanced degrees and specialized expertise
Biotechnology and pharmaceutical research roles at Broad Institute typically require specialized graduate-level qualifications. A PhD or research-focused master's degree strengthens both your candidacy and the specialty occupation case that underpins H-1B and EB-2 petitions.
Research open roles at verified sponsors
Broad Institute posts openings across research, engineering, and operations. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history and find roles at organizations like Broad Institute that have actively supported international candidates.
Prepare for a rigorous, mission-driven interview process
Broad Institute recruits for scientific excellence and collaborative impact. Tailor your application to their disease research focus, be ready to discuss your work's broader implications, and demonstrate long-term commitment to the organization to strengthen the case for sponsorship.

Find Broad Institute JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Broad Institute sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Broad Institute sponsors H-1B visas and is an active sponsor in the biotechnology and biomedical research sector. The institute regularly files H-1B petitions for research scientists, computational biologists, software engineers, and other specialized roles. As a nonprofit research organization, Broad Institute may also qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filings, which can mean faster processing and more flexible start dates outside the standard April lottery window.
Which roles at Broad Institute are most likely to receive visa sponsorship?
Sponsorship at Broad Institute is most common in research-intensive and technically specialized positions, including computational biology, genomics research, data science, software engineering, and laboratory science roles. These positions typically require graduate-level qualifications, which aligns well with the specialty occupation standard required for H-1B petitions and the advanced degree requirement for EB-2 Green Card filings.
Does Broad Institute sponsor Green Cards?
Yes, Broad Institute has supported Green Card sponsorship for employees on longer-term employment tracks. Sponsorship typically follows the EB-2 or EB-3 employment-based categories, often after an employee has been with the institute for some time on H-1B status. If permanent residency is a priority, it's worth asking the recruiter or HR team during the offer stage which roles have a history of Green Card support.
How do I find open jobs at Broad Institute that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find roles at Broad Institute and other verified sponsors. Unlike general job boards, Migrate Mate surfaces employers with a confirmed sponsorship history so you can search with confidence. You can filter by visa type, industry, and location to identify open positions at organizations that have actively filed for international candidates in biotechnology and research.
How do I approach the application process at Broad Institute as an international candidate?
Be transparent about your visa status early in the process. Broad Institute has experience sponsoring international hires, so this is not a red flag for their recruiting team. Emphasize your scientific credentials, any graduate research relevant to their disease focus areas, and your long-term interest in the organization. If you're currently on OPT or H-1B, clarify your authorization timeline so the team can plan any required filings without delays.
