Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Teaching Jobs at Chicago Public Schools Jobs
Get your credentials evaluated before applying
Illinois requires state licensure to teach in public schools. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a foreign credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before submitting applications. CPS will need to confirm your qualifications meet Illinois State Board of Education requirements.
Target subject areas with persistent shortages
CPS regularly posts openings in special education, bilingual education, and STEM subjects. Focusing your applications on these shortage areas improves your chances of finding a principal or hiring manager willing to initiate the sponsorship process on your behalf.
Understand how the school year affects hiring timelines
CPS hiring peaks between February and May for the following academic year. If your visa status has a hard expiration date, time your applications so an offer and H-1B filing can be completed before the October 1 cap-subject start date.
Ask HR explicitly about cap-exempt H-1B eligibility
As a public school district, CPS may qualify as a cap-exempt H-1B employer under the nonprofit or government research institution exemption. If it does, H-1B petitions can be filed year-round without lottery, which removes a major timing risk for your job start date.
Prepare your documentation for PERM early if targeting a Green Card
EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship requires DOL PERM labor certification, which can take a year or more. If a long-term pathway matters to you, raise it with CPS HR during the offer stage so the process can start alongside your initial H-1B petition.
Browse verified Teaching openings on Migrate Mate
Filtering by sponsor history saves time when you're targeting a specific district. Use Migrate Mate to find Teaching roles at CPS that are actively open and have a confirmed visa sponsorship track record for international candidates.

Find Teaching at Chicago Public Schools JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Chicago Public Schools sponsor H-1B visas for Teachers?
Yes, Chicago Public Schools sponsors H-1B visas for Teaching roles. CPS has an established process for working with international teachers, particularly in high-need subject areas like special education, bilingual instruction, and STEM. Because CPS is a large public district, it's worth confirming with HR whether your specific role qualifies for cap-exempt H-1B filing, which would allow petitions outside the annual lottery window.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at Chicago Public Schools?
Applications for Teaching positions at CPS are submitted through the district's official careers portal. You'll need a current Illinois Professional Educator License or documentation showing you're in the process of obtaining one. For international applicants, having a foreign credential evaluation ready and a clear summary of your teaching experience in your subject area will strengthen your application from the start.
Which visa types does Chicago Public Schools commonly use for Teaching roles?
CPS sponsors H-1B visas for most international teachers and also supports F-1 OPT and CPT for candidates completing U.S.-based education programs. For teachers seeking permanent residence, CPS has used EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa categories, which require PERM labor certification through the DOL. TN visas are an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose teaching specialty falls under eligible USMCA classifications.
What qualifications does Chicago Public Schools expect for Teaching roles?
CPS requires an Illinois Professional Educator License for most classroom positions, which means you'll need a qualifying bachelor's degree and completion of an approved teacher preparation program. For international applicants, your foreign degree must be evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluation agency to confirm it's equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. Subject-matter expertise matters significantly in shortage areas like special education and bilingual education.
How do I find Teaching jobs at Chicago Public Schools that offer visa sponsorship?
The most efficient approach is to search on Migrate Mate, which filters Teaching openings at CPS by verified sponsor history so you're not applying blind. CPS posts new Teaching roles frequently, especially in the spring hiring cycle for the following school year, so setting up alerts for your subject area and checking regularly will help you catch openings as soon as they're live.
