Get your credentials evaluated before applying
Chicago Public Schools requires state licensure for most Instructor roles. If your degree is from outside the U.S., submit it to a NACES-approved evaluation service early. Illinois licensure processing adds weeks, so don't wait until you have an offer.
Target open Instructor requisitions directly on CPS
Chicago Public Schools posts Instructor openings through its own careers portal, organized by school and subject area. Applying through the district's system, rather than third-party boards, puts your application in front of the HR teams who handle sponsorship decisions.
Clarify OPT and CPT timelines with your hiring contact
If you're on F-1 status, your OPT start date must align with the school year's hiring calendar. CPS typically onboards Instructors in late summer, so coordinate your DSO authorization window to avoid a gap between your start date and authorized work period.
Understand how the TN category fits teaching roles
Canadian and Mexican nationals can pursue TN status for certain Instructor roles if the position requires a qualifying degree in a relevant field. Confirm with CPS HR that your specific job title and duties meet DOL's TN specialty occupation criteria before assuming eligibility.
Ask CPS HR about PERM timing for permanent sponsorship
EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship requires the employer to file a PERM labor certification with DOL before petitioning USCIS. For Instructor roles at a large district like CPS, this process can take a year or more. Raise the conversation early, not after your H-1B cap year starts.
Find CPS Instructor openings faster using Migrate Mate
Searching for visa-sponsoring employers in education can be time-consuming. Use Migrate Mate to filter Instructor jobs at Chicago Public Schools by visa type, so you're only reviewing roles where sponsorship has been documented for your specific status.

Find Instructor at Chicago Public Schools JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Chicago Public Schools sponsor H-1B visas for Instructors?
Yes, Chicago Public Schools sponsors H-1B visas for Instructor roles. As a large public school district, CPS qualifies as a cap-exempt employer under USCIS rules because it is a nonprofit educational institution, which means H-1B petitions for qualifying Instructor positions can be filed at any time of year without waiting for the annual lottery.
How do I apply for Instructor jobs at Chicago Public Schools?
Applications for Instructor positions are submitted through the Chicago Public Schools careers portal at careers.cps.edu. You'll need to create a candidate profile, upload your resume, and complete any subject-specific assessments. Positions are posted by school and grade level, so narrow your search by subject area and indicate your visa sponsorship needs during the process.
Which visa types does Chicago Public Schools commonly use for Instructor roles?
Chicago Public Schools sponsors H-1B visas most commonly for Instructor positions, and also supports EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa pathways for educators seeking permanent residence. F-1 OPT and CPT are options for recent graduates in qualifying programs, and Canadian or Mexican nationals may explore TN status if their role and degree field meet DOL's criteria.
What qualifications does Chicago Public Schools expect for Instructor positions?
Most Instructor roles at Chicago Public Schools require a bachelor's degree in the relevant subject area and a valid Illinois Professional Educator License. Some specialized or bilingual Instructor positions may require additional endorsements. If your degree was earned outside the U.S., you'll need a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency to confirm equivalency before Illinois licensure can be processed.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a CPS Instructor role?
Timeline depends on visa type. H-1B cap-exempt filings at CPS typically take two to four months with standard USCIS processing. PERM-based green card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 can take one to three years from labor certification to final approval. If you're actively searching for Instructor roles at Chicago Public Schools that match your visa status, Migrate Mate can help you filter opportunities by sponsorship type so you're not starting from scratch.
