Job Roles at City and County of San Francisco Companies
How to Get Visa Sponsorship in City and County of San Francisco Visa Sponsorship USA
Target technical and specialized roles
San Francisco city government tends to sponsor visas for roles requiring specialized expertise, think IT, engineering, public health, and planning. Focus your search on departments where your technical or professional credentials are directly relevant to the city's operational needs.
Understand the government hiring timeline
Public sector hiring moves slower than the private sector. San Francisco city roles often involve civil service processes, examinations, and multi-stage approvals. Start your application well ahead of any visa deadline to account for the longer onboarding and sponsorship processing timeline.
Check which visa types the city supports
San Francisco sponsors H-1B visas along with F-1 OPT, CPT, TN, and J-1, a broader range than many government employers. If you're on a student or exchange visa, there may be entry-level or internship pathways worth exploring before pursuing full H-1B sponsorship.
Look for roles tied to city-funded programs
Departments like the Department of Public Health, the Municipal Transportation Agency, and the Office of Economic and Workforce Development frequently hire specialized talent. These program-driven teams are more likely to justify visa sponsorship when candidates have hard-to-find skills.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for verified government sponsors
Government employers that sponsor aren't always easy to identify. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history and find San Francisco city roles without wading through listings that don't lead anywhere for visa holders.
Emphasize public service alignment in your application
San Francisco city hiring panels assess candidate fit with public sector values. Highlighting experience serving diverse communities, working within regulated environments, or contributing to civic outcomes can meaningfully strengthen your application for roles where sponsorship is on the table.

Does City and County of San Francisco sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, the City and County of San Francisco does sponsor H-1B visas. Sponsorship is generally reserved for specialized professional roles where the city cannot readily fill the position with a U.S. worker. Roles in technology, public health, engineering, and urban planning tend to be the most common pathways for H-1B sponsorship within the city's various departments.
Which visa types does City and County of San Francisco sponsor?
San Francisco sponsors H-1B visas and also accommodates workers on F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, TN, and J-1 status. This makes it one of the more visa-inclusive government employers in the country. If you're currently on a student or exchange program visa, there may be opportunities to gain experience with the city before transitioning to a longer-term sponsored status.
Which departments or roles at City and County of San Francisco are most likely to offer visa sponsorship?
Visa sponsorship at San Francisco's city government tends to be concentrated in departments with strong technical or specialized staffing needs. The Department of Public Health, the Department of Technology, and infrastructure-focused agencies like the Public Utilities Commission are among the more active hiring departments. Roles in software development, data analysis, clinical services, and civil engineering are typically stronger candidates for sponsorship consideration.
How do I apply for a sponsored role at City and County of San Francisco?
Start by browsing open positions through the city's official job portal, but be prepared for a process that differs from private sector hiring. Many roles require passing a civil service examination or meeting specific minimum qualifications before your application advances. Once you receive an offer, the sponsoring department works with the city's HR and legal teams to initiate the visa petition, so confirm sponsorship intent with the hiring manager before accepting.
How do I find open visa-sponsored jobs at City and County of San Francisco?
Migrate Mate is the most efficient way to find sponsored roles at San Francisco's city government. Rather than manually reviewing job listings with no indication of sponsorship willingness, Migrate Mate surfaces employers with a verified sponsorship track record, including public sector employers like San Francisco, so you can focus your applications where they're most likely to lead somewhere as an international candidate.
