INTRODUCTION
We’re not just building better tech. We’re rewriting how data moves and what the world can do with it. With Confluent, data doesn’t sit still. Our platform puts information in motion, streaming in near real-time so companies can react faster, build smarter, and deliver experiences as dynamic as the world around them.
It takes a certain kind of person to join this team. Those who ask hard questions, give honest feedback, and show up for each other. No egos, no solo acts. Just smart, curious humans pushing toward something bigger, together.
One Confluent. One Team. One Data Streaming Platform.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
As a Senior Software Engineer II at Confluent, you will take ownership of critical backend systems in Stream Governance products that underpin our data streaming platform. You’ll lead the design and delivery of large-scale, distributed services that must be secure, highly available, and easy to operate across regions and clouds.
The Stream Governance product portfolio is crucial to achieving Confluent’s mission to put event streaming at the heart of every organization. Our mission is to provide a robust, cloud-native platform that ensures data quality and integrity by standardizing structure and enforcing intelligent rules across every stream. You will be responsible for delivering critical functionalities like Confluent Schema Registry, Data Contracts, and Policies.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with the team and key stakeholders to design, architect, and develop cloud-native, multi-tenant services for Stream Governance. You will be responsible for guiding the vision, providing technical leadership, mentoring, and enabling a high-performing engineering team to tackle complex distributed data challenges at scale.
You’ll act as a technical leader: setting direction for projects, making architecture decisions, mentoring engineers, and partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to ship high-impact work.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Develop and architect the cloud-native Stream Governance platform - a multi-tenant, highly available, and scalable service for Kafka and real-time data.
- Own and lead the end-to-end design and implementation of complex backend services within a cloud-native, microservices-based environment.
- Drive projects from requirements and design through implementation, rollout, and ongoing operation in production.
- Make architecture and technical decisions that thoughtfully balance reliability, scalability, performance, and operability.
- Solve complicated technical projects with high quality, provide specialized technical guidance to the team, and mentor/support other engineers through code reviews and design reviews.
- Evaluate and enhance the efficiency of our platform's technology stack, ensuring we keep pace with industry trends and adopt state-of-the-art solutions.
- Take responsibility for developing, managing, and maintaining a mission-critical service with a 99.99 SLA running across 100+ AWS, GCP, and Azure regions.
- Partner across engineering and with other key stakeholders to create and execute the overall roadmap for delivering a top-notch Data Streaming Platform.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, inclusive collaboration, and high technical standards.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING:
- 5+ years of industry experience designing, building, scaling, and operating backend systems in production.
- Deep proficiency in at least one major backend programming language (e.g., Java, Go, C/C++, or Python) and strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and system design.
- Hands-on experience with distributed systems, such as event-driven architectures, high-throughput services, or large-scale data pipelines. A strong understanding of consistency, fault tolerance, and performance tradeoffs.
- Strong experience running production services in a public cloud (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including containerized workloads (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Expertise in cloud-native technology, including networking & security, and experience being part of an oncall rotation.
- Proven experience in leading and mentoring technical teams.
- A track record of technical leadership: driving projects, influencing architecture, and coordinating work across multiple engineers or teams.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to align stakeholders, explain complex ideas clearly, and drive decisions.
- BS, MS, or PhD in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
WHAT GIVES YOU AN EDGE:
- Experience building or operating mission-critical, multi-tenant, or multi-region services with strict availability and latency requirements.

Align your portfolio to hardware infrastructure
Confluent's Mechanical Engineering needs center on data center hardware, thermal management, and server enclosure design. Tailor your resume and portfolio to show experience with these systems rather than consumer product or automotive manufacturing work.
Verify your degree field matches the role
H-1B specialty occupation requires a direct connection between your degree and the job duties. A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field is straightforward, but interdisciplinary degrees need clear documentation linking your coursework to the posted responsibilities.
Target Confluent's hardware and facilities teams directly
Confluent posts Mechanical Engineer openings across infrastructure and facilities functions, not just product development. Searching both categories on their careers page surfaces roles that receive sponsorship but get fewer applications from candidates who scan only engineering listings.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Confluent's open roles
Browsing Confluent's sponsorship-confirmed Mechanical Engineer postings is faster through Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for visa-sponsoring employers in the technology sector so you're not guessing which listings are open to international candidates.
Start OPT paperwork before your final semester ends
USCIS recommends filing OPT authorization up to 90 days before your program end date. If you're targeting a Confluent offer as a new graduate, an early OPT start date gives you active work authorization during what is often a multi-month interview and offer process.
Understand the PERM timeline before accepting an offer
If Confluent moves you toward an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card, the PERM labor certification process with DOL typically runs six months to over a year before the I-140 petition even begins. Factor that into your long-term status planning when evaluating an offer.

Find Mechanical Engineer at Confluent JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Confluent sponsor H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers?
Yes, Confluent sponsors H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers. The role qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS criteria because it requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a directly related field. Sponsorship is handled through Confluent's internal immigration team, and the process typically begins after an offer is accepted.
How do I apply for Mechanical Engineer jobs at Confluent?
Applications go through Confluent's careers page, where Mechanical Engineer roles are listed under engineering and infrastructure categories. You can also find sponsorship-confirmed postings through Migrate Mate, which filters for roles open to international candidates. Tailoring your application to highlight hardware infrastructure experience relevant to data center environments will strengthen your candidacy.
Which visa types does Confluent commonly use for Mechanical Engineers?
Confluent supports H-1B, TN, and F-1 OPT for Mechanical Engineers in nonimmigrant status. For permanent residence, the company uses EB-2 and EB-3 pathways, both of which require PERM labor certification through the Department of Labor before the immigrant petition is filed with USCIS. The right pathway depends on your nationality, degree level, and years of experience.
What qualifications does Confluent expect for Mechanical Engineer roles?
Most Mechanical Engineer postings at Confluent require a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline, along with hands-on experience in areas such as thermal systems, enclosure design, or hardware reliability. Roles tied to data center or server infrastructure often expect familiarity with ASHRAE cooling standards or equivalent industry specifications. Advanced degrees can strengthen both your candidacy and your Green Card pathway options.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take at a company like Confluent?
For H-1B transfers or cap-exempt filings, USCIS standard processing runs three to five months, with premium processing available for a faster decision. New H-1B cap-subject petitions are tied to the annual lottery, which runs in March for an October 1 start date. EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card timelines are longer, with PERM alone averaging six to twelve months before the immigrant petition stage begins.
