We’re not just building better tech. We’re rewriting how data moves and what the world can do with it. With Confluent, data doesn’t sit still. Our platform puts information in motion, streaming in near real-time so companies can react faster, build smarter, and deliver experiences as dynamic as the world around them.
It takes a certain kind of person to join this team. Those who ask hard questions, give honest feedback, and show up for each other. No egos, no solo acts. Just smart, curious humans pushing toward something bigger, together.
One Confluent. One Team. One Data Streaming Platform.
About the Role:
You'll help build Confluent Cloud's AI capabilities — the layer that lets customers bring AI and AI agents capabilities directly to their real-time data. Instead of moving data out to a separate system to run inference or build an agent, our customers do it in place, on streaming data, as part of the same platform they already use to move and process events at scale.
As an engineer, you'll own delivery of significant pieces of this product — not just writing code, but deciding how a capability should work across the services that make it up. The interesting problems here rarely live in one place: shipping something like inference-on-streaming-data or an AI agent that reacts to live events touches several systems at once — the user-facing API, the services that manage model and agent lifecycle, the control plane that schedules and runs the work, and the serving layer that actually executes inference. You'll be expected to reason across those boundaries, make sound design calls, and get engineers inside and outside the team aligned on the approach.
What You Will Do:
- Design and build the backend services (primarily Go, Java, and Python) that run AI and model inference on real-time data.
- Own features end to end — drafting the design, aligning stakeholders inside and outside the team, and driving the decision to a conclusion.
- Make the technical calls on systems that span teams: model lifecycle, inference routing, and agent execution.
- Own the quality of what you ship — code, test coverage, documentation, operability, and rollout safety. This is production infrastructure serving live inference, so reliability isn't an afterthought.
- Make the engineers around you better through code review, design feedback, and being someone the team trusts with ambiguous, cross-cutting work.
- Participate in on-call for the services your team owns, and help keep the team's processes and rituals healthy.
What You Will Bring:
- 10+ years of significant experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems or cloud-native backend infrastructure in production.
- Strong working knowledge of Kubernetes and distributed-systems patterns (control loops, API servers, high-scale control planes), plus the fundamentals — containerization, networking, resource isolation.
- Proficiency in at least one of Go, Java, or Python, and the willingness to work across all three.
- A track record of leading cross-team technical work: turning ambiguous requirements into designs others can rally behind.
- Excellent written and verbal communication — you can write a design doc that aligns people who don't report to you.
What Gives You an Edge:
-
Exposure to model serving, LLM/agent infrastructure, or streaming data systems.
-
You don't need a background in ML research or model training — this role is about building and operating the platform that serves AI reliably at scale, not inventing the models.

Align your skills with streaming infrastructure
Confluent's engineering roles center on distributed systems, Apache Kafka, and cloud-native architectures. Highlighting hands-on experience with event-driven systems or messaging platforms in your resume positions you as a direct match before your application reaches a recruiter.
Confirm OPT authorization before your interview
If you're on F-1 OPT, verify your SEVP portal record shows an active EAD before any offer stage. Confluent's recruiting team will need to confirm your work authorization timeline, and gaps or pending STEM OPT extensions can stall the process.
Target roles explicitly tied to product engineering
Confluent's sponsorship activity is concentrated in product-facing engineering teams rather than infrastructure support. Filter job listings by teams working on Confluent Cloud or the core Kafka platform to find positions where visa sponsorship is most consistently part of the hiring process.
Use Migrate Mate to surface open Software Developer roles
Confluent posts Software Developer openings across multiple teams at different times. Use Migrate Mate to filter active roles by visa type so you can identify which positions are currently open and confirmed for sponsorship without manually tracking the company careers page.
Understand H-1B cap timing before accepting an offer
If you need a new H-1B, USCIS only accepts registrations in March for an October 1 start date. Discuss this timeline with your Confluent recruiter early so both sides can plan around the lottery window and avoid a gap in your authorization.
Request clarity on PERM sponsorship during negotiation
For TN or H-1B holders targeting long-term U.S. residence, ask Confluent's recruiting team directly about their Green Card sponsorship policy during the offer stage. Companies in the Technology and Software sector vary significantly on when they initiate the PERM labor certification process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Confluent sponsor H-1B visas for Software Developers?
Yes, Confluent sponsors H-1B visas for Software Developer roles. The company has an established pattern of filing H-1B petitions for engineering positions, particularly on teams building cloud and streaming infrastructure. If you're currently on an H-1B with another employer, Confluent can file an H-1B transfer, which lets you start working as soon as USCIS receives the petition.
How do I apply for Software Developer jobs at Confluent?
Apply directly through Confluent's careers page or use Migrate Mate to browse currently open Software Developer roles filtered by visa sponsorship type. Before applying, tailor your resume to reflect distributed systems experience and Kafka or streaming platform work, as Confluent's engineering interviews are heavily technical and focus on systems design and real-world architecture problems.
Which visa types does Confluent commonly sponsor for Software Developers?
Confluent sponsors H-1B visas for the broadest range of Software Developer roles. The company also supports F-1 OPT and STEM OPT extensions for recent graduates, and hires on TN status for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying software engineering positions. For longer-term employees, Confluent initiates EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications does Confluent expect for Software Developer roles?
Most Software Developer roles at Confluent require a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field, which also satisfies the specialty occupation requirement for H-1B eligibility. Practically, Confluent's engineering interviews test systems design, distributed computing concepts, and proficiency in languages like Java, Go, or Python. Familiarity with Apache Kafka is a strong differentiator for roles on the core platform team.
How do I time my application around the H-1B lottery?
USCIS opens H-1B registration each March for an October 1 start date, so if you need a cap-subject H-1B, you'll want an offer in place before the registration window opens. Confluent's recruiting cycle for engineering roles runs throughout the year, so securing an offer in January or February gives you the best chance of being included in that year's lottery.
