Job Description:
The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?
The Virtual Machine Monitor Group (“Monitor Group”) is responsible for the core CPU and memory virtualization technology used in all of Broadcom's VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) Division products. You will have the opportunity to work with bleeding edge CPU technology, VT-x/AMD-V, interrupt virtualization, memory virtualization/management, and virtualization of other forms of compute technologies and accelerators.
The VCF Division works to build products and solutions that power the hybrid cloud. Working alongside other highly motivated and capable engineers you will get to interact with our largest customers to define the next generation of Broadcom's industry-leading VMWare Cloud Foundation platform.
Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?
The Monitor Group’s principal function is to maintain and develop the virtual CPU and memory aspects of the virtual machine platform that runs guest operating systems.
In the first 6 months, you will be expected to get up to speed with one of the specialization areas, such as new CPU feature enablement, x86_64 instruction set (ISA) virtualization, confidential computing, modernization of the monitor architecture, hardware accelerators, power-aware compute or aspects of guest timekeeping. By year 1 you would be expected to have impactful, core engineering contributions and enhancements in your area of specialization.
The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
This role requires you to possess a deep understanding of processor architecture and low-level OS kernel internals, system software including memory management, resource management, and interrupt architecture. The principal programming language used is C, with assembly code used whenever needed to deal with machine-specific constructs.
You will work independently and as a member of a team of software engineers to design and deliver features in support of new processors or a proposed enhancement for the virtual machine monitor architecture. As an example, you might be involved in the design and implementation of upcoming CPU instruction set updates in a virtualization context. Similarly, you may be assigned to contribute to an aspect of memory virtualization/management features as part of a monitor modernization effort. For more senior roles you would be expected to make proposals that help define the design roadmap, or drive a technical effort leading other engineers.
What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?
You will be joining as a Virtual Machine Monitor Engineer as part of the Monitor Group. The Monitor Group is a part of the VMWare Cloud Foundation (VCF) Division under Broadcom. This organization handles all aspects of virtual machine engineering and has deep roots in the history of the company. The Monitor Group is highly collaborative in nature, with a well-established culture of engineering discipline. Here you will have the opportunity not only to interact with other team members within the Group, but also other groups working on core aspects of vSphere. You will lead your part within the projects, as well as frequently be given the opportunity to present your work to others and learn about the novel work of other engineers.

- Experience in C, and assembly programming
- Experience working on the kernel and/or virtualization space
- Proficient in x86_64 CPU architecture
Must have legal authorization to work in the US.

Align your stack with Broadcom's core products
Broadcom hires Software Developers across storage, networking, and broadband divisions. Tailoring your resume to reflect experience with firmware, kernel development, or enterprise networking protocols signals direct fit and strengthens the business justification needed for specialty occupation filings.
Verify your OPT start date before applying
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your authorization period leaves enough runway for Broadcom's hiring cycle. Hardware-adjacent software roles often involve extended technical screens, so a short remaining OPT window can complicate offer timing before an H-1B petition is filed.
Flag TN eligibility if you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship
For qualifying Software Developer roles, TN status can be processed at the border without waiting on USCIS. Broadcom sponsors TN petitions, and raising this option early with a recruiter can accelerate your start date compared to standard H-1B petition timelines.
Request PERM timeline clarity during the offer stage
Broadcom sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards, but PERM labor certification adds significant time before an immigrant petition is filed. Ask the recruiter when PERM sponsorship typically begins relative to your start date so you can plan around DOL processing backlogs.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Software Developer roles at Broadcom
Broadcom posts Software Developer openings across multiple divisions simultaneously. Use Migrate Mate to filter for Broadcom roles by visa type so you're applying to positions where your specific sponsorship need is already supported, rather than discovering limitations late in the process.
Prepare a degree-to-role mapping document before interviews
USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation claims for Software Developer titles. Having a clear written connection between your bachelor's field and the specific technical requirements of the Broadcom role you're targeting strengthens the H-1B petition your employer's immigration counsel will prepare.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Broadcom sponsor H-1B visas for Software Developers?
Yes, Broadcom sponsors H-1B visas for Software Developer roles. The company works with immigration counsel to file H-1B petitions for qualifying positions, which must meet USCIS's specialty occupation standard. Because Broadcom's software roles typically require a degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field, they generally satisfy that threshold.
How do I apply for Software Developer jobs at Broadcom?
Apply directly through Broadcom's careers portal, where roles are posted by product division and location. To find positions that already support your specific visa category, use Migrate Mate to filter Broadcom's Software Developer openings by sponsorship type. This saves time by surfacing roles where your immigration need is explicitly supported before you invest in a full application.
Which visa types does Broadcom commonly use for Software Developer roles?
Broadcom sponsors H-1B, TN visa, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and employment-based Green Cards including EB-2 and EB-3 for Software Developer positions. H-1B is the most common long-term path. TN visa is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying roles. F-1 OPT and CPT are used for early-career and student hires before transitioning to a longer-term status.
What qualifications does Broadcom expect for Software Developer roles?
Most Software Developer roles at Broadcom require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, or software engineering. Positions in semiconductor or networking software often expect proficiency in C, C++, or Python alongside domain knowledge in firmware, storage protocols, or enterprise networking. Advanced roles may require graduate credentials or significant industry experience in hardware-adjacent software development.
How do I time my application around H-1B cap deadlines if I'm on OPT?
H-1B cap registrations open in March each year, with an October 1 start date if selected. If you're on OPT, Broadcom would need to submit your registration in March and file the full petition by June. Cap-gap protection extends your OPT authorization through September 30 if your registration is selected, giving you continuous work authorization while the petition is processed by USCIS.
