Job Description:
The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?
The Virtual Machine Monitor Group (“Monitor Group”) is responsible for the core CPU and memory virtualization technology used in all of Broadcom's VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) Division products. You will have the opportunity to work with bleeding edge CPU technology, VT-x/AMD-V, interrupt virtualization, memory virtualization/management, and virtualization of other forms of compute technologies and accelerators.
The VCF Division works to build products and solutions that power the hybrid cloud. Working alongside other highly motivated and capable engineers you will get to interact with our largest customers to define the next generation of Broadcom's industry-leading VMWare Cloud Foundation platform.
Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?
The Monitor Group’s principal function is to maintain and develop the virtual CPU and memory aspects of the virtual machine platform that runs guest operating systems.
In the first 6 months, you will be expected to get up to speed with one of the specialization areas, such as new CPU feature enablement, x86_64 instruction set (ISA) virtualization, confidential computing, modernization of the monitor architecture, hardware accelerators, power-aware compute or aspects of guest timekeeping. By year 1 you would be expected to have impactful, core engineering contributions and enhancements in your area of specialization.
The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
This role requires you to possess a deep understanding of processor architecture and low-level OS kernel internals, system software including memory management, resource management, and interrupt architecture. The principal programming language used is C, with assembly code used whenever needed to deal with machine-specific constructs.
You will work independently and as a member of a team of software engineers to design and deliver features in support of new processors or a proposed enhancement for the virtual machine monitor architecture. As an example, you might be involved in the design and implementation of upcoming CPU instruction set updates in a virtualization context. Similarly, you may be assigned to contribute to an aspect of memory virtualization/management features as part of a monitor modernization effort. For more senior roles you would be expected to make proposals that help define the design roadmap, or drive a technical effort leading other engineers.
What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?
You will be joining as a Virtual Machine Monitor Engineer as part of the Monitor Group. The Monitor Group is a part of the VMWare Cloud Foundation (VCF) Division under Broadcom. This organization handles all aspects of virtual machine engineering and has deep roots in the history of the company. The Monitor Group is highly collaborative in nature, with a well-established culture of engineering discipline. Here you will have the opportunity not only to interact with other team members within the Group, but also other groups working on core aspects of vSphere. You will lead your part within the projects, as well as frequently be given the opportunity to present your work to others and learn about the novel work of other engineers.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field and 8+ years of related experience or Masters degree in Computer Science or related field and 6+ years of related experience or PhD plus 3+ years.
- Experience in C, and assembly programming
- Experience working on the kernel and/or virtualization space
- Proficient in x86_64 CPU architecture
Must have legal authorization to work in the US.
Compensation and Benefits
The annual base salary range for this position is USD 121,900.00 To USD 195,000.00
As a valued member of our team, you'll be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus and the opportunity to receive not only a competitive new hire equity grant, but also annual equity awards, connecting your success directly to the company's growth. All subject to relevant plan documents and award agreements.

Align Your Credentials to Broadcom's Specialty Occupation Standard
USCIS requires R&D roles to qualify as specialty occupations, meaning your degree must directly relate to the position's technical requirements. A degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field strengthens your H-1B petition for Broadcom's hardware and software research teams.
Target Broadcom's Semiconductor and Networking R&D Teams
Broadcom's R&D hiring concentrates in silicon design, firmware, and network infrastructure. Tailoring your application to these verticals, and referencing relevant technical domains like ASIC development or protocol engineering, signals fit to the teams most likely to extend sponsorship offers.
Use Migrate Mate to Surface Broadcom R&D Openings Filtered by Visa Type
Broadcom posts R&D roles across multiple divisions simultaneously. Migrate Mate lets you filter open positions by visa sponsorship type so you can identify which specific R&D teams are actively hiring sponsored candidates rather than sorting through unsponsored postings manually.
Prepare for Broadcom's H-1B Cap Season Filing Window
H-1B registrations open in March for an October 1 start date. If you're on F-1 OPT, coordinate your offer acceptance timeline with Broadcom's HR team so the I-129 petition is filed before your OPT authorization expires, leaving no gap in work authorization.
Understand How Broadcom Uses the PERM Process for Green Card Sponsorship
For EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship, Broadcom initiates a DOL PERM labor certification, which documents that no qualified U.S. worker was available for the role. This process typically begins one to two years into employment, so confirming the company's standard timeline during offer negotiations is practical.
Verify Your TN Eligibility Before Negotiating an R&D Offer
Canadian and Mexican engineers may qualify for TN status under the engineer category, which bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely and can be obtained at a port of entry. Confirm your specific R&D job duties map to a qualifying TN profession under USMCA before relying on this pathway.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Broadcom sponsor H-1B visas for R&D Engineers?
Yes, Broadcom sponsors H-1B visas for R&D Engineers, particularly in semiconductor design, firmware development, and networking infrastructure roles. The company files H-1B petitions through the standard USCIS cap process, with an October 1 start date following March lottery registration. Candidates on F-1 OPT should align their offer and start date with Broadcom's HR team to avoid any gap in work authorization during the transition.
How do I apply for R&D Engineer jobs at Broadcom?
Applications go through Broadcom's careers portal, where R&D roles are posted by division including silicon engineering, software research, and network systems. You can also browse Broadcom's open R&D positions filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles where sponsorship is actively supported so you're not applying to postings that exclude international candidates.
Which visa types does Broadcom commonly use for R&D Engineer roles?
Broadcom sponsors H-1B visas as the primary work authorization path for R&D Engineers, along with F-1 OPT and CPT for students in engineering programs. Canadian and Mexican engineers in qualifying research roles may be eligible for TN visa status under USMCA. For longer-term employees, Broadcom initiates EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through the DOL PERM process after the initial employment period.
What qualifications does Broadcom expect for sponsored R&D Engineer positions?
Broadcom's R&D roles typically require a bachelor's degree at minimum in electrical engineering, computer science, or a closely related field, with graduate degrees preferred for research-intensive positions. Hands-on experience in areas like VLSI design, firmware, RF systems, or network protocol development is weighted heavily. Because USCIS requires the degree to directly relate to the role for H-1B qualification, a general engineering background alone may not be sufficient for specialized research teams.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for an R&D Engineer offer at Broadcom?
For H-1B, the timeline depends on lottery selection in March and a fixed October 1 start date, though premium processing through USCIS can reduce adjudication to 15 business days once the petition is filed. TN status for Canadian engineers can be obtained same-day at a port of entry. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship runs on a separate multi-year track and is typically initiated after you're established in the role.
