Tailor your resume to Broadcom's engineering stack
Broadcom's Software Design Engineer roles frequently require experience in RTL design, SystemVerilog, or firmware development for networking or storage ASICs. Align your resume to these specifics before applying rather than submitting a generic software engineering resume.
Clarify your visa category during initial screening
Broadcom sponsors multiple visa types, so be upfront with the recruiter about your current status and what you need. Conflating OPT with H-1B sponsorship needs early in the process causes delays and miscommunication that can kill an offer.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Broadcom openings by visa type
Broadcom posts Software Design Engineer roles across multiple divisions and locations, making it hard to track which positions align with your visa situation. Migrate Mate filters active openings by sponsorship type so you target the right roles from the start.
Prepare for the H-1B cap timeline before your offer
If you're transitioning off F-1 OPT and need H-1B sponsorship, the annual cap registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. Confirm with Broadcom's HR team whether your offer can be structured around that timeline or if a cap-exempt arrangement applies.
Build a portfolio showing hardware-software integration work
Broadcom's engineering interviews emphasize practical design experience. Projects demonstrating firmware development, driver architecture, or FPGA prototyping carry more weight than coursework alone and signal readiness for the complexity of their product lines.
Understand how PERM labor certification affects your green card path
Broadcom files PERM applications through DOL for EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship. The PERM process typically takes 12 to 18 months before an I-140 petition can be filed, so align your long-term immigration planning to that sequence from day one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Broadcom sponsor H-1B visas for Software Design Engineers?
Yes, Broadcom sponsors H-1B visas for Software Design Engineers. The company works with immigration counsel to file H-1B petitions and participates in the annual USCIS cap registration process. If you're currently on F-1 OPT, Broadcom can maintain your work authorization while an H-1B petition is pending through cap-gap protections, provided your OPT remains valid through the October 1 start date.
How do I apply for Software Design Engineer jobs at Broadcom?
Applications go through Broadcom's careers portal, where roles are listed by division and location. Software Design Engineer positions appear under hardware engineering, firmware, or platform software depending on the team. Migrate Mate is a practical starting point if you want to filter Broadcom's open roles specifically by the visa types they sponsor, so you're only spending time on positions that match your situation.
Which visa types does Broadcom commonly sponsor for Software Design Engineer roles?
Broadcom sponsors H-1B, TN visa, and F-1 OPT and CPT for Software Design Engineers, and supports Green Card sponsorship through the EB-2 and EB-3 employment-based categories via PERM labor certification. The right pathway depends on your nationality, education level, and how long you've been in the U.S. TN visa is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles without a lottery.
What qualifications does Broadcom expect for Software Design Engineer roles?
Most Software Design Engineer roles at Broadcom require a bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science. Practical experience with RTL design, SystemVerilog, firmware development, or ASIC verification is frequently required, not just preferred. For H-1B sponsorship, the role must qualify as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards, which Broadcom's engineering positions typically meet given the degree requirements and technical specificity.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Software Design Engineer at Broadcom?
For H-1B sponsorship, the standard timeline runs from cap registration in March to an October 1 employment start date, a roughly six-month window. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 takes longer: DOL adjudication alone runs 12 to 18 months before Broadcom can file an I-140 with USCIS. F-1 OPT authorization is faster if you're already in the U.S. and your program end date aligns with the offer.
