Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?
The Virtual Machine Monitor Group (“Monitor Group”) is responsible for the core CPU and memory virtualization technology used in all of Broadcom's VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) Division products. You will have the opportunity to work with bleeding edge CPU technology, VT-x/AMD-V, interrupt virtualization, memory virtualization/management, and virtualization of other forms of compute technologies and accelerators. The VCF Division works to build products and solutions that power the hybrid cloud. Working alongside other highly motivated and capable engineers you will get to interact with our largest customers to define the next generation of Broadcom's industry-leading VMWare Cloud Foundation platform.
Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?
The Monitor Group’s principal function is to maintain and develop the virtual CPU and memory aspects of the virtual machine platform that runs guest operating systems. In the first 6 months, you will be expected to get up to speed with one of the specialization areas, such as new CPU feature enablement, x86_64 instruction set (ISA) virtualization, confidential computing, modernization of the monitor architecture, hardware accelerators, power-aware compute or aspects of guest timekeeping. By year 1 you would be expected to have impactful, core engineering contributions and enhancements in your area of specialization.
What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
This role requires you to possess a deep understanding of processor architecture and low-level OS kernel internals, system software including memory management, resource management, and interrupt architecture. The principal programming language used is C, with assembly code used whenever needed to deal with machine-specific constructs. You will work independently and as a member of a team of software engineers to design and deliver features in support of new processors or a proposed enhancement for the virtual machine monitor architecture. As an example, you might be involved in the design and implementation of upcoming CPU instruction set updates in a virtualization context. Similarly, you may be assigned to contribute to an aspect of memory virtualization/management features as part of a monitor modernization effort. For more senior roles you would be expected to make proposals that help define the design roadmap, or drive a technical effort leading other engineers.
What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?
You will be joining as a Virtual Machine Monitor Engineer as part of the Monitor Group. The Monitor Group is a part of the VMWare Cloud Foundation (VCF) Division under Broadcom. This organization handles all aspects of virtual machine engineering and has deep roots in the history of the company. The Monitor Group is highly collaborative in nature, with a well-established culture of engineering discipline. Here you will have the opportunity not only to interact with other team members within the Group, but also other groups working on core aspects of vSphere. You will lead your part within the projects, as well as frequently be given the opportunity to present your work to others and learn about the novel work of other engineers.

Align your credentials to Broadcom's specializations
Broadcom's R&D Engineering hiring concentrates in semiconductor IP, ASIC design, networking silicon, and storage firmware. Frame your resume and portfolio around these domains rather than general software engineering, since hiring managers are screening for depth in specific technology stacks.
Expect a multi-stage technical interview process
Broadcom's R&D Engineering interviews typically include hardware design challenges, RTL coding assessments, or systems architecture reviews depending on the subteam. Targeting the right business unit, such as broadband versus data center networking, sharpens your preparation and signals genuine interest.
Understand how TN status fits your background
Canadian and Mexican nationals with engineering degrees can pursue TN status as an alternative to the H-1B lottery. TN petitions for engineers require proof your role qualifies under the USMCA engineer category, so confirm the specific job title aligns before your offer is finalized.
Track open R&D roles using Migrate Mate
Broadcom posts R&D Engineering roles across multiple business units and locations at different times. Use Migrate Mate to filter for Broadcom positions that explicitly include visa sponsorship, so you're only spending time on roles where your immigration needs are already accounted for.
Clarify Green Card sponsorship timing during offer negotiation
Broadcom sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards, but PERM labor certification timelines vary significantly by role and backlog for your country of birth. Ask your recruiter during offer negotiation whether your specific role has been designated as eligible for permanent sponsorship.

Does Broadcom sponsor H-1B visas for R&D Engineers?
Yes. Broadcom sponsors H-1B visas for R&D Engineering roles and has a consistent track record of filing petitions across its technology business units. If you're subject to the annual H-1B cap, your employer submits a registration in March for the April lottery. Roles in ASIC design, firmware, and networking infrastructure are among the positions Broadcom fills through this pathway.
How do I apply for R&D Engineering jobs at Broadcom?
Applications go through Broadcom's careers portal, where roles are posted by business unit and location. Tailor your application to the specific technology domain, such as broadband, data center, or storage, since hiring teams are specialized. You can also browse Broadcom's open R&D Engineering roles filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility directly on Migrate Mate before applying.
Which visa types does Broadcom commonly use for R&D Engineering roles?
Broadcom uses H-1B for the majority of sponsored R&D Engineers, alongside F-1 OPT and CPT for students and recent graduates in qualifying degree programs. Canadian and Mexican engineers may be eligible for TN status. For long-term employees, Broadcom also sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card petitions, which require PERM labor certification filed through the Department of Labor.
What qualifications does Broadcom expect for R&D Engineering roles?
Most R&D Engineering positions at Broadcom require a bachelor's degree at minimum in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related field, with many senior roles expecting a master's or PhD. Hands-on experience in ASIC design, RTL development, firmware engineering, or networking protocols is weighted heavily. Broadcom's H-1B petitions require the role to qualify as a specialty occupation under USCIS criteria, which these degree requirements typically satisfy.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Broadcom R&D Engineering offer?
For H-1B cap-subject petitions, the process is tied to the annual lottery cycle, with employment starting no earlier than October 1 of the fiscal year. USCIS premium processing reduces the adjudication window to 15 business days once a petition is filed. For OPT to H-1B transitions, Broadcom typically files well before the April 1 filing date to avoid gaps in authorization.
