INTRODUCTION
We’re not just building better tech. We’re rewriting how data moves and what the world can do with it. With Confluent, data doesn’t sit still. Our platform puts information in motion, streaming in near real-time so companies can react faster, build smarter, and deliver experiences as dynamic as the world around them.
It takes a certain kind of person to join this team. Those who ask hard questions, give honest feedback, and show up for each other. No egos, no solo acts. Just smart, curious humans pushing toward something bigger, together.
One Confluent. One Team. One Data Streaming Platform.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
As a Senior Software Engineer II at Confluent, you will take ownership of critical backend systems in Stream Governance products that underpin our data streaming platform. You’ll lead the design and delivery of large-scale, distributed services that must be secure, highly available, and easy to operate across regions and clouds.
The Stream Governance product portfolio is crucial to achieving Confluent’s mission to put event streaming at the heart of every organization. Our mission is to provide a robust, cloud-native platform that ensures data quality and integrity by standardizing structure and enforcing intelligent rules across every stream. You will be responsible for delivering critical functionalities like Confluent Schema Registry, Data Contracts, and Policies.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with the team and key stakeholders to design, architect, and develop cloud-native, multi-tenant services for Stream Governance. You will be responsible for guiding the vision, providing technical leadership, mentoring, and enabling a high-performing engineering team to tackle complex distributed data challenges at scale.
You’ll act as a technical leader: setting direction for projects, making architecture decisions, mentoring engineers, and partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to ship high-impact work.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Develop and architect the cloud-native Stream Governance platform - a multi-tenant, highly available, and scalable service for Kafka and real-time data.
- Own and lead the end-to-end design and implementation of complex backend services within a cloud-native, microservices-based environment.
- Drive projects from requirements and design through implementation, rollout, and ongoing operation in production.
- Make architecture and technical decisions that thoughtfully balance reliability, scalability, performance, and operability.
- Solve complicated technical projects with high quality, provide specialized technical guidance to the team, and mentor/support other engineers through code reviews and design reviews.
- Evaluate and enhance the efficiency of our platform's technology stack, ensuring we keep pace with industry trends and adopt state-of-the-art solutions.
- Take responsibility for developing, managing, and maintaining a mission-critical service with a 99.99 SLA running across 100+ AWS, GCP, and Azure regions.
- Partner across engineering and with other key stakeholders to create and execute the overall roadmap for delivering a top-notch Data Streaming Platform.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, inclusive collaboration, and high technical standards.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING:
- 5+ years of industry experience designing, building, scaling, and operating backend systems in production.
- Deep proficiency in at least one major backend programming language (e.g., Java, Go, C/C++, or Python) and strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and system design.
- Hands-on experience with distributed systems, such as event-driven architectures, high-throughput services, or large-scale data pipelines. A strong understanding of consistency, fault tolerance, and performance tradeoffs.
- Strong experience running production services in a public cloud (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including containerized workloads (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Expertise in cloud-native technology, including networking & security, and experience being part of an oncall rotation.
- Proven experience in leading and mentoring technical teams.
- A track record of technical leadership: driving projects, influencing architecture, and coordinating work across multiple engineers or teams.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to align stakeholders, explain complex ideas clearly, and drive decisions.
- BS, MS, or PhD in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
WHAT GIVES YOU AN EDGE:
- Experience building or operating mission-critical, multi-tenant, or multi-region services with strict availability and latency requirements.
- Familiarity with data streaming technologies such as Apache Kafka, Flink, or similar systems.
- Demonstrated impact beyond your immediate team, such as driving cross-org initiatives or technical vision.
- Contributions to open source, technical writing, or speaking that showcase technical depth.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Product Software Engineer Jobs at Confluent Jobs
Tailor your resume to streaming infrastructure
Confluent's Product Software Engineer roles center on Apache Kafka, event-driven architecture, and distributed systems. Framing your experience around these technologies rather than generic backend engineering makes your application directly relevant to what their teams are building.
Distinguish product engineering from platform engineering in interviews
Confluent separates product-facing engineering from internal platform work. In interviews, demonstrate experience owning customer-visible features in the Kafka ecosystem. Showing product intuition alongside distributed systems depth positions you clearly for the Product Software Engineer track.
Time your offer negotiation around H-1B cap deadlines
H-1B cap registrations open in March for an October 1 start. If you're receiving an offer in late winter, clarify with the recruiter whether they'll file in the upcoming registration window so you're not waiting an extra year for status.
Search open roles through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Confluent's active Product Software Engineer openings by visa sponsorship type. This lets you prioritize roles where your specific visa category, whether H-1B, TN, or OPT, is explicitly supported before investing time in the application.
Prepare your credentials for PERM before the green card stage
For EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship, DOL's PERM process requires your employer to document your qualifications match the role's minimum requirements. Gather official transcripts and employment verification letters now so there's no delay when Confluent initiates the labor certification filing.

Find Product Software Engineer at Confluent JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Confluent sponsor H-1B visas for Product Software Engineers?
Yes, Confluent sponsors H-1B visas for Product Software Engineers. The company has a consistent pattern of filing H-1B petitions for engineering roles, and Product Software Engineer positions fall squarely within the specialty occupation standard USCIS applies to software development roles. If you're cap-subject, your employer would file during the annual March registration window for an October 1 start date.
Which visa types does Confluent commonly sponsor for Product Software Engineers?
Confluent sponsors H-1B, F-1 OPT (including STEM extension), TN, and employment-based Green Card pathways such as EB-2 and EB-3 for Product Software Engineers. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals whose role qualifies under the USMCA engineer category. Green Card sponsorship typically follows an initial H-1B period and involves PERM labor certification filed with the DOL.
How do I apply for Product Software Engineer jobs at Confluent?
Start by browsing Confluent's active Product Software Engineer openings on Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm your category is supported before applying. Tailor your application to highlight distributed systems experience, particularly with Apache Kafka or event streaming platforms. Confluent's engineering interview process typically includes system design rounds focused on scalability and product-facing architecture decisions.
What qualifications does Confluent expect for Product Software Engineer roles?
Confluent generally expects a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, which also satisfies the specialty occupation requirement for H-1B purposes. Beyond credentials, interviewers assess hands-on experience with distributed systems, real-time data pipelines, and customer-facing product development. Familiarity with Kafka's internals or cloud-native data infrastructure is a meaningful differentiator.
How do I think about timing when targeting Confluent for visa sponsorship?
If you need H-1B sponsorship, the practical timeline runs from March registration through an October 1 employment start, so securing an offer in the first quarter of the year gives you the cleanest path. For F-1 OPT candidates, STEM extension applications must be filed with USCIS before your initial OPT expires. Starting the interview process three to four months before any status deadline gives you enough buffer to handle offer timelines without gaps.
