INTRODUCTION
We’re not just building better tech. We’re rewriting how data moves and what the world can do with it. With Confluent, data doesn’t sit still. Our platform puts information in motion, streaming in near real-time so companies can react faster, build smarter, and deliver experiences as dynamic as the world around them.
It takes a certain kind of person to join this team. Those who ask hard questions, give honest feedback, and show up for each other. No egos, no solo acts. Just smart, curious humans pushing toward something bigger, together.
One Confluent. One Team. One Data Streaming Platform.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
As a Senior Software Engineer II at Confluent, you will take ownership of critical backend systems in Stream Governance products that underpin our data streaming platform. You’ll lead the design and delivery of large-scale, distributed services that must be secure, highly available, and easy to operate across regions and clouds.
The Stream Governance product portfolio is crucial to achieving Confluent’s mission to put event streaming at the heart of every organization. Our mission is to provide a robust, cloud-native platform that ensures data quality and integrity by standardizing structure and enforcing intelligent rules across every stream. You will be responsible for delivering critical functionalities like Confluent Schema Registry, Data Contracts, and Policies.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with the team and key stakeholders to design, architect, and develop cloud-native, multi-tenant services for Stream Governance. You will be responsible for guiding the vision, providing technical leadership, mentoring, and enabling a high-performing engineering team to tackle complex distributed data challenges at scale.
You’ll act as a technical leader: setting direction for projects, making architecture decisions, mentoring engineers, and partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to ship high-impact work.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Develop and architect the cloud-native Stream Governance platform - a multi-tenant, highly available, and scalable service for Kafka and real-time data.
- Own and lead the end-to-end design and implementation of complex backend services within a cloud-native, microservices-based environment.
- Drive projects from requirements and design through implementation, rollout, and ongoing operation in production.
- Make architecture and technical decisions that thoughtfully balance reliability, scalability, performance, and operability.
- Solve complicated technical projects with high quality, provide specialized technical guidance to the team, and mentor/support other engineers through code reviews and design reviews.
- Evaluate and enhance the efficiency of our platform's technology stack, ensuring we keep pace with industry trends and adopt state-of-the-art solutions.
- Take responsibility for developing, managing, and maintaining a mission-critical service with a 99.99 SLA running across 100+ AWS, GCP, and Azure regions.
- Partner across engineering and with other key stakeholders to create and execute the overall roadmap for delivering a top-notch Data Streaming Platform.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, inclusive collaboration, and high technical standards.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING:
- 5+ years of industry experience designing, building, scaling, and operating backend systems in production.
- Deep proficiency in at least one major backend programming language (e.g., Java, Go, C/C++, or Python) and strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and system design.
- Hands-on experience with distributed systems, such as event-driven architectures, high-throughput services, or large-scale data pipelines. A strong understanding of consistency, fault tolerance, and performance tradeoffs.
- Strong experience running production services in a public cloud (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including containerized workloads (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Expertise in cloud-native technology, including networking & security, and experience being part of an oncall rotation.
- Proven experience in leading and mentoring technical teams.
- A track record of technical leadership: driving projects, influencing architecture, and coordinating work across multiple engineers or teams.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to align stakeholders, explain complex ideas clearly, and drive decisions.
- BS, MS, or PhD in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
WHAT GIVES YOU AN EDGE:
- Experience building or operating mission-critical, multi-tenant, or multi-region services with strict availability and latency requirements.

Align your resume to distributed systems work
Confluent's backend roles center on Kafka internals, stream processing, and high-throughput infrastructure. Highlight experience with JVM-based languages, distributed consensus, or event-driven architecture before you apply. Generic backend experience is harder to differentiate here.
Verify your visa category before interviews start
Confluent sponsors H-1B, TN, and F-1 OPT among other categories, but each has different employer filing timelines. Knowing which category fits your citizenship and status lets you ask informed questions during the offer stage rather than scrambling after signing.
Time F-1 OPT applications around Confluent's hiring cycles
If you're on F-1 OPT, apply with enough runway for USCIS to process your EAD. OPT STEM extensions give you up to 24 additional months, but your employer must be E-Verify enrolled. Confluent participates in E-Verify, which satisfies that requirement.
Get your credential evaluation done early
If your computer science degree is from outside the U.S., a NACES-member evaluation confirming U.S. bachelor's equivalency strengthens your H-1B specialty occupation case. Confluent's recruiting team will flag this need, but waiting until the offer stage creates unnecessary delays.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Confluent's open roles by visa type
Confluent posts backend engineering roles across seniority levels, and not all of them are equally sponsorship-friendly. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Backend Software Engineer positions at Confluent that align with your visa category, so you target the right openings.
Clarify Green Card sponsorship intent before accepting an offer
Confluent has sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 petitions for engineering roles, which involves PERM labor certification with the DOL. Ask your recruiter directly whether the role includes a Green Card sponsorship commitment and what the typical timeline looks like at their level.

Does Confluent sponsor H-1B visas for Backend Software Engineers?
Yes, Confluent sponsors H-1B visas for Backend Software Engineers. The company has an established pattern of filing H-1B petitions for technical roles, including backend engineering positions. If you receive an offer, Confluent's immigration team typically works with external counsel to prepare and file the H-1B petition. Confirm the specifics of timing and support during the offer negotiation stage.
How do I apply for Backend Software Engineer jobs at Confluent?
You can browse and apply for Backend Software Engineer roles at Confluent directly through their careers page, or use Migrate Mate to filter open positions by visa sponsorship type before applying. Confluent's hiring process for backend roles typically involves a recruiter screen, a technical phone interview focused on distributed systems and coding, a system design round, and a final panel.
Which visa types does Confluent commonly use for Backend Software Engineers?
Confluent sponsors H-1B, TN, F-1 OPT, EB-2, and EB-3 visas for Backend Software Engineers. H-1B is the most common path for full-time hires. F-1 OPT is available for recent graduates during their authorized work period. TN is an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying technical roles. EB-2 and EB-3 apply to Green Card sponsorship after initial employment.
What qualifications does Confluent expect for Backend Software Engineer roles?
Confluent's backend engineering roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, along with strong proficiency in Java or another JVM language. Experience with distributed systems, stream processing, or data infrastructure is heavily weighted. Senior-level roles generally expect prior work on high-scale, low-latency systems, and familiarity with Apache Kafka is a notable advantage.
How long does the sponsorship and filing process take at Confluent?
For H-1B, the timeline depends on the USCIS filing window. Cap-subject H-1B petitions are submitted in April for an October 1 start date, meaning you could wait up to six months after the lottery selection. Premium processing reduces the USCIS adjudication window to 15 business days. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 typically takes two to four years from filing to approval, depending on your country of birth and DOL processing backlogs.
