About the Team
DoorDash Labs is an independent team within DoorDash. We explore robotics and automation to transform last mile logistics in the long term. If you have a passion for applying robotics solutions in a service used by millions of people, we want to talk to you!
About the Role
In this role, your main focus will be to ship embedded control algorithms for various ECUs that operate the powertrain and other systems of the robot. Additionally, you will rigorously test the robot's performance at various levels (simulation, component testing, end-to-end road testing etc.) and continuously seek to improve development processes, testing methods, bug triage and robot performance. You will report to a Technical Lead on our Autonomy team.
You're excited about this opportunity because you will…
- Design and implement algorithms for closed-loop vehicle controls, supervisory controls, thermal management and auxiliary controls of various robot systems.
- Build infrastructure (test cases, plant models, functional models) to systematically verify the behavior of algorithms.
- Proactively design features/systems/processes to exceed the needs of internal customers i.e. robot operations, field service, autonomy software stack and hardware.
- Define and solve new problems not listed here using new skills and knowledge that you may have to acquire on the fly!
We're excited about you because...
- BS/MS degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or related technical field.
- Experience developing and testing brushless motor controls.
- 5+ years hands-on experience of building robots, autonomous vehicles or other complex mechatronics systems.
- Proficiency in model based design using MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow and strong understanding of fundamental parts of robotics or mechatronics systems: feedback control, sensors, actuators, embedded controllers, CAN communication.
- Working knowledge of C and Python.
Nice to have...
- Experience in building physical models of mechatronic systems for simulation.
- Strong understanding of road vehicle dynamics.
- Deep respect and understanding for a principled and rigorous approach to testing safety-critical systems.
- Ability to write clear, concise and complete documentation of designs and tasks.
- Comfortable using source control and build automation tools like Git, Jenkins etc.

Tailor your resume to hardware delivery systems
DoorDash Mechanical Engineer roles frequently involve robotics, thermal management, and product enclosures for delivery hardware. Frame your resume around systems-level design and manufacturing experience rather than pure theoretical engineering to align with what their teams are actually building.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
Before you commit to an offer, verify that DoorDash is enrolled in E-Verify, which is required for F-1 OPT STEM extension eligibility. Skipping this check can put your 24-month extension at risk if the employer relationship is formalized without confirming enrollment status.
Start PERM preparation before your OPT clock expires
If you're targeting a Green Card through PERM-based EB-2 or EB-3, initiate the conversation with your hiring manager early. The PERM labor certification process can take a year or more, so waiting until your nonimmigrant status is close to expiring leaves little margin for delays.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open Mechanical Engineer roles at DoorDash
Searching broadly for engineering jobs wastes time. Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for Mechanical Engineer positions at DoorDash that are open to your visa type, so you can prioritize roles where sponsorship is already part of the hiring process.
Align your H-1B registration timing with DoorDash's hiring cycle
USCIS opens H-1B registration in early March for an October 1 start date. For a tech company like DoorDash, engineering headcount decisions often follow annual budget cycles, so targeting offers in the January to February window gives you the best chance of having your petition filed in the same cap season.
Prepare a portfolio of physical product work for technical interviews
DoorDash Mechanical Engineer interviews often include design exercises tied to real delivery constraints, like thermal limits, drop durability, or form factor trade-offs. Bring documented examples of hardware you've taken from concept to prototype or production, not just CAD models or academic projects.

Find Mechanical Engineer at DoorDash JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does DoorDash sponsor H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers?
Yes, DoorDash sponsors H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers. The company has a consistent history of filing H-1B petitions across its engineering functions, including hardware and robotics roles. If you're currently on H-1B status with another employer, DoorDash can file an H-1B transfer petition, which allows you to start working before USCIS issues an approval.
How do I apply for Mechanical Engineer jobs at DoorDash?
Applications go through DoorDash's careers portal, where Mechanical Engineer roles are listed under hardware, robotics, or infrastructure engineering teams. To filter specifically for roles that include visa sponsorship, Migrate Mate provides a curated view of DoorDash's open positions organized by visa type. Tailor your application to emphasize systems-level hardware experience relevant to delivery or logistics technology.
Which visa types does DoorDash commonly sponsor for Mechanical Engineer roles?
DoorDash sponsors several visa categories for Mechanical Engineers, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, H-1B1 for Singaporean and Chilean nationals, and TN for Canadian and Mexican professionals. For students on F-1 OPT, DoorDash supports both standard OPT and STEM OPT extension if the role qualifies. Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 is also available for eligible employees.
What qualifications and experience does DoorDash expect for Mechanical Engineer roles?
DoorDash typically looks for a bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. Relevant experience with electromechanical systems, thermal design, product enclosures, or robotics is valued, particularly for roles tied to delivery hardware. Familiarity with manufacturing processes and hands-on prototyping experience often differentiates candidates in the interview process. Advanced degrees can strengthen both the job application and any future PERM-based Green Card filing.
How does the visa sponsorship process typically work once DoorDash extends an offer?
After an offer is accepted, DoorDash's immigration team or outside counsel initiates the petition process. For H-1B transfers or cap-exempt filings, work can often begin within a few weeks of filing. For cap-subject H-1B cases, the October 1 start date constraint applies, so timing your offer to the March registration window matters. USCIS premium processing is available to expedite approval to roughly 15 business days when timeline is a concern.
