In this position...
We are seeking a hands-on Thermal Test Engineer to manage our state-of-the-art thermal lab, design specialized test fixtures, and lead all physical testing activities from component characterization to full vehicle validation for our EV thermal management systems. This role generates the empirical data that underpins all design and control decisions.
What you'll do...
- Lab Management: Work with other thermal test engineers and technicians to manage and maintain the thermal test lab facilities, including equipment calibration, scheduling, and ensuring a safe and efficient testing environment.
- Test Fixture Design: Collaborate with Design Engineers to design, procure, and validate specialized test fixtures for component, subsystem, and system-level thermal testing.
- Component & Subsystem Characterization: Plan and execute characterization tests for individual thermal components (pumps, valves, heat exchangers, compressors, etc.) and integrated subsystems (coolant loops, refrigeration circuits, HVAC modules). Provide empirical data to System Engineers for plant model validation.
- Full Vehicle Validation: Lead and execute comprehensive full vehicle thermal validation tests in environmental chambers, climatic wind tunnels, and on test tracks, simulating various real-world and extreme operating conditions.
- Data Acquisition & Analysis: Select, install, and calibrate appropriate instrumentation (thermocouples, pressure transducers, flow meters) and manage high-volume data acquisition systems. Analyze test data to assess performance, identify anomalies, and support root cause analysis.
- Test Automation: Develop and implement automated testing protocols for long-term durability and reliability cycles. Partner with systems and controls engineers to integrate robust safety loops and external monitoring, ensuring autonomous tests operate safely and fail gracefully under anomalous conditions.
- Reporting: Prepare detailed test plans, procedures, and reports summarizing test results, findings, and recommendations for various engineering teams.
- Troubleshooting: Provide critical empirical data and test expertise to support troubleshooting efforts across all thermal engineering disciplines.
You'll have...
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
- 3+ years of experience in thermal testing, lab management, and/or test fixture design, preferably in the automotive industry.
- Strong practical knowledge of thermal measurement techniques, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems.
- Experience with environmental testing (e.g., climatic chambers, wind tunnels).
- Proficiency in data analysis tools using Python.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and schematics.
Even better, you may have...
- Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Experience with EV thermal management component and system testing.
- Familiarity with test automation software (e.g., LabVIEW, Python, etc.).
- Familiarity with CAN/LIN/Ethernet communication protocols and working with smart devices.
You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!

Match your degree to Ford's specialty occupation roles
Ford's E-3 filings concentrate in roles requiring engineering or computer science degrees in a directly related field. Review job postings for language like 'degree in [specific field] required' rather than 'preferred' before applying.
Target Ford's electrification and software teams
Ford's EV and software-defined vehicle programs are active hiring areas for technical talent. Applications aligned to these teams signal awareness of where Ford is investing, which strengthens your case for sponsorship consideration.
Verify your prevailing wage tier before negotiations
Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the prevailing wage for your occupation code and Ford's work location before you receive an offer. Arriving at salary discussions already knowing your wage level prevents surprises during the LCA filing stage.
Confirm Ford's E-3 filing capacity with HR early
During the offer stage, ask Ford's HR or immigration team directly whether they have an active relationship with an immigration attorney who handles E-3 filings. Not all large employers process E-3 separately from H-1B visa, so confirming the process early avoids delays.
Use Migrate Mate to research Ford's sponsorship history
Before applying, search Ford Motor Company on Migrate Mate to review its LCA filing history by occupation code. This shows which roles Ford has sponsored and helps you tailor your application to positions with a documented sponsorship track record.
Prepare your credential equivalency documentation in advance
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees are generally accepted for E-3 specialty occupation purposes, but Ford's immigration attorneys may request a credential evaluation. Having a NACES-member evaluation ready before the offer stage removes a common bottleneck.
Ford Motor Company E-3 Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Ford Motor Company sponsor E-3 visas?
Yes, Ford Motor Company sponsors E-3 visas for Australian professionals in qualifying specialty occupation roles. Sponsorship is concentrated in engineering, software development, and technical disciplines tied to Ford's vehicle programs. Not every open role at Ford is available for E-3 sponsorship, so confirming visa support directly with the recruiting team during the interview process is advisable.
Which roles and departments at Ford typically receive E-3 sponsorship?
Ford's E-3 sponsorship activity is strongest in roles requiring specialized engineering credentials, including powertrain, software, systems, and electrification engineering. Technical positions within Ford's EV and connected vehicle teams have been active hiring areas. Roles in corporate functions like finance or HR are less commonly sponsored under E-3, as they must meet the specialty occupation standard requiring a directly related degree.
How do I navigate the E-3 application process at Ford Motor Company?
Once Ford extends an offer, its immigration team or outside counsel files a Labor Condition Application with the DOL, which typically certifies within seven business days. You then apply for the E-3 visa at a U.S. consulate in Australia with the certified LCA and supporting documents. USCIS is not involved in consular E-3 applications, which keeps the timeline shorter than employer-filed petitions.
How long does E-3 sponsorship processing take at Ford Motor Company?
The DOL LCA certification phase typically takes about seven business days. After that, consulate appointment wait times in Australia vary by location and season. Most applicants complete the full process from offer acceptance to visa stamp within four to eight weeks, though administrative processing can extend this. Migrate Mate can help you understand current consulate timelines and prepare your filing package accurately.
What practical steps should I take before applying to Ford for E-3 sponsorship?
Review Ford job postings for roles that explicitly require a bachelor's degree in a specific field, since this language is essential for the specialty occupation determination. Use O*NET to verify that your target occupation is classified at a degree-requiring level. Prepare your credential documentation, including a credential evaluation if your degree is from an Australian institution, so you're ready to move quickly once an offer is extended.
What is the prevailing wage for E-3 sponsorship at Ford Motor Company?
E-3 employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, determined when they file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, ensuring Australian hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
