Align your credentials to Virginia licensure requirements
Virginia requires state teaching licensure before you can work in any public school classroom. Start the VDOE credential evaluation early, because FCPS will want to see a clear path to licensure before committing to a sponsorship conversation.
Target high-need subject areas strategically
FCPS consistently recruits for shortage areas like special education, mathematics, and world languages. Positioning your application around these subjects gives you a stronger case for sponsorship, since the district has more incentive to go through the process for hard-to-fill roles.
Clarify your OPT or CPT authorization timeline upfront
If you're on F-1 OPT, FCPS can hire you before an H-1B is filed, but the school year calendar and your OPT expiration date need to line up. Raise this in your first conversation with HR so the district can plan around your authorized work period.
Understand how the cap-subject H-1B affects school district timing
Public school districts are not cap-exempt, so FCPS must file your H-1B petition during the April lottery window for an October 1 start. That means a spring job offer won't translate to authorized H-1B employment until the following academic year at the earliest.
Find open Teaching roles at FCPS through Migrate Mate
Search Migrate Mate to filter FCPS teaching positions by visa type and role. Seeing which roles have active openings helps you prioritize your application and reach out to FCPS HR with a specific position in mind rather than a general inquiry.
Prepare your TN documentation if you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship
Teaching professionals from Canada or Mexico may qualify for TN status under the USMCA. FCPS HR will need a support letter confirming your role and degree, and you'll need to present a valid offer letter at the port of entry or apply through USCIS.

Find Teaching at Fairfax County Public Schools JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Fairfax County Public Schools sponsor H-1B visas for Teachers?
Yes, Fairfax County Public Schools sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying teaching roles. Because FCPS is a public school district and not a higher education institution, it is subject to the H-1B cap, meaning petitions must be filed during the annual USCIS lottery window. Candidates should plan for an October 1 employment start date if selected, and confirm sponsorship willingness with FCPS HR early in the hiring process.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at Fairfax County Public Schools?
Applications for FCPS teaching positions go through the district's official careers portal, where you can filter by subject area and school level. You can also browse open FCPS teaching roles on Migrate Mate, which shows positions alongside their visa sponsorship history. Before applying, make sure your Virginia teaching licensure is in progress or complete, since FCPS requires it for classroom employment.
Which visa types does Fairfax County Public Schools commonly use for Teaching roles?
FCPS has sponsored H-1B visas for teachers in specialty occupation roles, particularly in shortage subject areas. The district also hires candidates on F-1 OPT and F-1 CPT for eligible positions, and may support TN status for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose teaching discipline qualifies under USMCA. The right visa type depends on your citizenship, degree field, and the specific role you're applying for.
What qualifications does Fairfax County Public Schools expect for sponsored Teaching positions?
FCPS requires a bachelor's degree in the subject area or education, along with Virginia state teaching licensure or a clear eligibility pathway. For H-1B sponsorship, the role must qualify as a specialty occupation, which teaching generally does when a specific degree field is required. Subject matter expertise in shortage areas like special education, STEM, or world languages strengthens your candidacy for sponsored positions.
How do I navigate the timing between a Teaching offer and my visa authorization at FCPS?
Timing is one of the most practical challenges for international teacher candidates at FCPS. If you're on F-1 OPT, your authorization window needs to overlap with the school year calendar, and FCPS HR needs to know your exact expiration date early. For H-1B candidates, the cap filing deadline in April and October 1 start date mean a spring offer may require a gap year or OPT bridge depending on your current status.
