Document Your Commercial Vehicle Certifications First
Before applying, gather ASE certifications, CDL endorsements, and any school bus inspection credentials. First Student's fleet work requires verifiable mechanical qualifications, and PERM-based sponsorship requires documenting that your skills meet specific occupational requirements.
Target Depots With Active Fleet Expansion
First Student operates hundreds of regional depots across the U.S. Locations recently awarded new school district contracts tend to hire mechanics urgently, which creates more leverage for candidates to raise sponsorship early in conversations with the hiring manager.
Use Migrate Mate to Surface Mechanic Openings
First Student posts Maintenance Mechanic roles across many locations simultaneously. Use Migrate Mate to filter for openings at this employer that align with visa sponsorship pathways, so you're not manually tracking dozens of regional job boards.
Understand That PERM Requires Proving No Qualified U.S. Workers
The DOL's PERM process requires First Student to advertise the role publicly and document recruitment efforts. If a U.S. worker applies and meets the minimum requirements, sponsorship for that specific position can be disrupted, so timing your application well matters.
Align Your Mechanical Specialty With Fleet Needs
First Student runs diesel-powered school buses, so experience with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and pre-trip inspection procedures carries more weight than general automotive experience. Framing your resume around school bus or transit fleet work strengthens the employer's PERM documentation.

Find Maintenance Mechanic at First Student JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does First Student sponsor H-1B visas for Maintenance Mechanics?
First Student's sponsorship activity for Maintenance Mechanic roles has focused on permanent residency pathways rather than H-1B. Maintenance Mechanic positions are generally classified as skilled trades rather than specialty occupations under USCIS definitions, which means they typically don't qualify for H-1B status. EB-3 is the most practical sponsorship route for this role at First Student.
Which visa types are commonly used for Maintenance Mechanic roles at First Student?
EB-3 is the most common pathway for Maintenance Mechanic roles at First Student, covering skilled workers who meet the job's specific requirements. EB-2 sponsorship is possible in limited cases where the position requires an advanced degree or the worker can demonstrate exceptional ability. Both pathways go through the DOL's PERM labor certification process before USCIS filing.
What qualifications or experience does First Student expect for Maintenance Mechanic positions?
First Student typically looks for mechanics with hands-on experience servicing diesel engines, brake systems, and electrical components on large vehicles. ASE certifications and experience with school bus or transit fleet equipment are strong differentiators. Some depots require candidates to hold or be eligible for a Commercial Driver's License, since mechanics may need to perform road tests.
How do I apply for Maintenance Mechanic jobs at First Student?
You can find and apply for Maintenance Mechanic openings at First Student through Migrate Mate, which aggregates the company's postings and filters for roles with visa sponsorship potential. When applying, tailor your resume to diesel fleet experience and explicitly note any ASE certifications. Follow up directly with the depot's service manager, since hiring decisions at First Student are often made at the local level.
How do I understand the timeline for Green Card sponsorship at First Student?
The EB-3 sponsorship process starts with PERM labor certification filed with the DOL, which currently takes over a year to process. Once approved, First Student files an I-140 petition with USCIS. If your priority date is current under the Visa Bulletin, you can then file for adjustment of status. The full process from job offer to Green Card approval commonly spans several years, so starting early in your tenure is critical.
