Frame your credentials around DOT compliance
First Student operates under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration standards. Certifications in transportation safety, fleet management, or logistics operations signal direct relevance to their compliance-heavy environment and strengthen your petition's specialty occupation case.
Target regional operations manager openings specifically
First Student's U.S. operations are organized by region and contract. Roles tied to contract performance, driver oversight, and route efficiency tend to sit higher in their hiring priority than entry-level dispatch positions, which improves your sponsorship leverage.
Understand how EB-3 fits transportation roles
Operations positions in transportation logistics often qualify under EB-3 skilled worker. If your role requires a degree plus specialized experience in fleet or dispatch management, confirm with your employer that the PERM job description reflects those requirements precisely before filing.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
As a federal contractor operating school transportation services, First Student is enrolled in E-Verify. Verify this enrollment status early in negotiations so your work authorization documentation is aligned and there are no delays on your start date.
Build your case around measurable operational outcomes
When interviewing for operations roles, quantify past results like on-time performance rates, fleet utilization improvements, or safety record metrics. DOL PERM requires the employer to document a genuine need, and your demonstrated impact strengthens that narrative.
Use Migrate Mate to find open operations roles

Find Operations at First Student JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does First Student sponsor H-1B visas for Operations roles?
First Student's sponsorship activity for operations roles has centered on employment-based immigrant visa categories rather than the H-1B. Operations positions in transportation logistics are less commonly associated with H-1B specialty occupation filings, since the visa requires a direct relationship between a specific degree field and the role. If you're targeting First Student, an EB-2 or EB-3 pathway is more likely to align with their historical approach.
How do I apply for Operations jobs at First Student?
You can apply directly through First Student's careers portal or find open roles filtered by sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate. When applying, tailor your resume to reflect transportation operations experience, including fleet management, driver oversight, dispatch coordination, or safety compliance. Roles tied to regional contract performance tend to be the most active hiring areas, so prioritize those listings when available.
Which visa types are commonly used for Operations roles at First Student?
Employment-based immigrant visas, specifically EB-2 and EB-3, are the categories most relevant to operations roles at First Student. EB-3 skilled worker applies when the position requires at least two years of training or a bachelor's degree in a related field. EB-2 applies when the role demands an advanced degree or exceptional ability. Both pathways require PERM labor certification filed with the DOL before the visa petition proceeds.
What qualifications does First Student expect for sponsored Operations positions?
First Student typically looks for candidates with experience in transportation operations, fleet coordination, or logistics management. Familiarity with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, driver management, and route optimization is relevant. For sponsored roles, a bachelor's degree in business, transportation management, or a related field strengthens both your candidacy and the specialty occupation argument required for employment-based visa sponsorship.
How do I plan my timeline for a sponsored Operations role at First Student?
Employment-based sponsorship through PERM is a multi-stage process. The DOL PERM labor certification alone can take six months to over a year before USCIS even receives the I-140 immigrant petition. Factor in priority date backlogs for your country of birth, particularly if you're from India or China where EB-3 wait times are significantly longer. Start conversations about sponsorship intent early in the offer negotiation stage.
