Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Mechanic Jobs at First Student Jobs
Verify your diesel credentials translate correctly
First Student hires for heavy-duty vehicle maintenance, so ASE certifications in medium and heavy truck categories carry more weight than automotive. Confirm your credentials align before applying, since mismatched qualifications slow the PERM labor certification process.
Target depot locations with active openings
First Student operates bus depots in most U.S. states, but hiring is decentralized by location. Focus your applications on depots posting multiple mechanic openings, since consistent local demand often signals a site willing to support longer-term staffing solutions including sponsorship.
Understand why EB-3 fits this role
Mechanic positions at First Student typically qualify under EB-3 skilled worker classification. Your employer files the PERM labor certification with DOL first, which can take six to twelve months before USCIS ever sees your I-140 petition.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsored mechanic openings
Filtering job boards for transportation employers with a real sponsorship history saves significant time. Migrate Mate lets you browse First Student mechanic roles specifically filtered by visa sponsorship track record, so you're not cold-applying without knowing sponsorship is on the table.
Raise sponsorship before accepting any written offer
Once First Student extends an offer, ask HR directly whether the location has worked with immigration counsel before. Depots that have navigated PERM before move faster than those handling their first sponsored hire, which affects your timeline significantly.
Prepare employment history documentation early
PERM requires proving your qualifications match the job's minimum requirements. Gather prior employer contact details, pay stubs, and any training certificates now, since gaps or informal experience that isn't documented can stall your labor certification filing.

Does First Student sponsor H-1B visas for Mechanics?
First Student does not typically pursue H-1B sponsorship for Mechanic roles. Mechanic positions are classified as skilled trades work, which falls outside the specialty occupation standard H-1B requires. First Student's sponsorship activity for this function sits within the employment-based immigrant visa categories, specifically EB-2 and EB-3, which lead to permanent residence rather than temporary work status.
Which visa types are commonly used for Mechanic roles at First Student?
Mechanic roles at First Student are sponsored through employment-based Green Card pathways, primarily EB-3 for skilled workers. This route starts with a PERM labor certification filed with the Department of Labor, followed by an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS. EB-2 is less common for trade roles but can apply if the position requires an advanced degree or exceptional qualifications are demonstrated.
What qualifications or experience are expected for Mechanic jobs at First Student?
First Student's Mechanic roles center on maintaining and repairing school buses and heavy-duty diesel vehicles. Hands-on experience with diesel engines, brake systems, and electrical diagnostics is expected. ASE certifications, particularly in medium and heavy truck categories, strengthen your application significantly. A valid CDL is sometimes required or preferred depending on the depot location and whether road testing repaired vehicles is part of the role.
How do I apply for Mechanic jobs at First Student?
You can browse current First Student Mechanic openings through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship history so you can identify locations actively hiring sponsored workers. Apply directly through First Student's careers portal once you've identified a relevant opening. Before submitting, confirm the depot location matches your target geography, since mechanic hiring and sponsorship decisions are made at the local operations level rather than corporate.
How long does the sponsorship process take for a Mechanic role at First Student?
The timeline is driven primarily by PERM labor certification, which DOL currently processes in roughly six to twelve months under standard filing conditions. After PERM approval, USCIS adjudicates the I-140 petition, which can take several additional months without premium processing. Depending on your country of birth, visa priority date backlogs may add further waiting time before you can file for adjustment of status or an immigrant visa.
