Get Your Credentials Evaluated Before Applying
Texas requires out-of-country degrees to be evaluated by a NACES-approved agency before you can obtain a state teaching certificate. Submit your evaluation early, FWISD's HR will ask for it, and delays here stall the entire sponsorship process.
Obtain Your Texas Teaching Certificate First
FWISD cannot realistically begin H-1B paperwork until you hold a valid Texas educator certification. Apply through the Texas Education Agency portal and complete any required deficiency plan or certification exam before you start interviewing.
Target High-Need Subject Areas at FWISD
FWISD consistently recruits for bilingual education, special education, and STEM subjects. Applying into one of these shortage areas signals immediate classroom value and makes a stronger internal case for the district to absorb sponsorship costs.
Clarify Sponsorship Scope During the Offer Stage
School districts typically structure employment on an academic-year contract. Confirm with FWISD HR whether H-1B approval will align with the school calendar and whether the petition covers summer payroll gaps or requires a separate arrangement.
Time Your OPT or TN Start Around School Year Hiring
FWISD's main hiring windows run from February through June for the following school year. If you're on F-1 OPT or applying as a Canadian or Mexican national under TN status, aligning your availability with this window significantly improves your chances of a timely offer.
Browse FWISD Teaching Openings on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Teaching roles at FWISD by visa type so you only see positions open to sponsored candidates. This saves time you'd otherwise spend vetting each listing manually across the district's general jobs portal.

Find Teaching at Fort Worth Independent School District JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Fort Worth Independent School District sponsor H-1B visas for Teachers?
Yes, Fort Worth Independent School District has sponsored H-1B visas for Teaching roles. As a large public school district, FWISD qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, meaning petitions can be filed at any time of year without entering the annual lottery. This is a meaningful advantage for teachers who missed the H-1B cap or need to change status quickly.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at Fort Worth Independent School District?
Applications go through the FWISD online careers portal, where you'll create a profile and submit your resume, Texas educator certification, and any required credentials. You can also browse open Teaching positions filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate before applying directly. Roles in bilingual education, special education, and secondary STEM tend to have the most consistent openings throughout the year.
Which visa types does Fort Worth Independent School District support for Teaching roles?
FWISD has sponsored H-1B visas and has also hired teachers on F-1 OPT and TN status. OPT is a practical starting point if you're transitioning from a U.S. university education program. TN status is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals whose teaching specialty falls under the USMCA-defined occupations list. H-1B is the most common long-term path for ongoing employment.
What qualifications does FWISD expect for sponsored Teaching positions?
You'll need a valid Texas educator certification for the subject and grade level you're applying to teach. That requires at minimum a bachelor's degree, a NACES-approved foreign credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S., and a passing score on the relevant TExES certification exam. FWISD gives priority to candidates who are fully certified before an offer is extended, not those working toward certification.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process take at a school district like FWISD?
Because FWISD is cap-exempt, there's no lottery wait, but USCIS standard processing for an H-1B petition typically runs three to five months. Premium processing, which USCIS currently adjudicates in about 15 business days, is available if either you or the district needs faster approval. Factor in time for the Labor Condition Application the employer files with DOL, which must be certified before the H-1B petition is submitted.
