Align your credentials to Google's security domains
Google's Security Engineering org divides into distinct pillars: detection and response, offensive security, product security, and privacy engineering. Tailor your resume and portfolio to one pillar rather than presenting broad experience, since teams hire specialists.
Pursue certifications that signal production-scale expertise
Certifications like OSCP, GREM, or cloud security credentials from Google itself carry weight in screening. They demonstrate hands-on capability, which matters for specialty occupation classification under H-1B and E-3 eligibility requirements.
Target roles explicitly listing visa sponsorship availability
Not every Google Security Engineer opening on their careers page includes sponsorship. Filter for roles that confirm it. Migrate Mate curates verified sponsorship-eligible Security Engineer listings at Google so you're not wasting applications on positions that won't move forward.
Understand Google's fiscal-year hiring cycle for technical roles
Google historically concentrates engineering headcount approvals in Q1 and early Q3. Applying or engaging recruiters outside those windows can mean slower pipelines. Timing your outreach to align with headcount release improves your chances of reaching an active requisition.
Confirm your visa category before accepting an offer
Google sponsors H-1B, H-1B1, and E-3 depending on your nationality. Australians should confirm E-3 processing since it avoids the H-1B lottery entirely. Clarify which petition type your offer letter covers before signing, because switching categories post-offer creates delays.
Request premium processing if your start date is fixed
USCIS offers premium processing for H-1B petitions, reducing the adjudication window to 15 business days. If you have a firm start date tied to a project or team onboarding cohort, ask your Google recruiter whether the team will request it.

Find Security Engineer at Google JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Google sponsor H-1B visas for Security Engineers?
Yes, Google sponsors H-1B visas for Security Engineer roles. Security Engineering positions at Google typically qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS criteria because they require at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science, cybersecurity, or a directly related field. Google's legal and immigration teams manage the H-1B petition process internally, so candidates receive dedicated support through each USCIS filing stage.
Which visa types does Google use for Security Engineer roles?
Google sponsors H-1B, H-1B1, and E-3 visas for Security Engineer positions. H-1B applies to most nationalities and goes through the annual lottery. H-1B1 is available to Chilean and Singaporean nationals without a lottery requirement. E-3 is exclusively for Australian citizens and also bypasses the lottery, making it a faster path if you qualify.
How do I apply for Security Engineer jobs at Google?
Applications go through Google's careers portal at careers.google.com. Security Engineer roles are spread across several teams, so searching by function rather than just job title surfaces more relevant openings. Migrate Mate also lists verified Security Engineer roles at Google with confirmed sponsorship eligibility, which helps you prioritize applications where international candidates are actively considered.
What qualifications does Google expect for Security Engineer candidates?
Google's Security Engineer roles generally require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, information security, or a related technical discipline. Hands-on experience in areas like vulnerability research, incident response, secure code review, or cloud security architecture is standard. For senior roles, practical experience with large-scale distributed systems or demonstrated offensive security capability is commonly expected over certifications alone.
How do I plan my timeline around Google's visa sponsorship process?
H-1B petitions can only be filed in April for an October 1 start date, so if you're lottery-dependent, factor in that gap when negotiating your offer. E-3 and H-1B1 don't have this constraint and can be filed year-round. Google typically initiates the sponsorship process after a formal offer is signed, so consular or USCIS timelines begin after that point.
