At Syngenta, our goal is to build the most collaborative and trustworthy team in agriculture, providing top-quality seeds and innovative crop protection solutions that improve farmers' success. To support this mission, Syngenta’s Seeds Research Traits Team is seeking a Principal Scientist II in Durham, NC. This role will establish and lead a comprehensive hemipteran research program by operationalizing physical rearing facilities and robust assay platforms.
The Principal Scientist II will serve as a critical cross-functional liaison and Subject Matter Expert (SME), driving the discovery of next-generation hemipteran crop protection traits through innovative methodologies, regulatory navigation, and the swift conversion of research concepts into functional laboratory operations.
Accountabilities:
- Establish and lead a hemipteran research program which comprises both insect rearing and assays.
- Develop and establish robust rearing practices of multiple hemipteran insect colonies.
- Develop and establish robust hemipteran insect assays (in vitro and in planta).
- Proactively identify and secure all necessary permits and documentation required to conduct research and facilitate the movement of insect species.
- Contribute to the pipeline by identifying and validating the next generation of hemipteran traits.
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in hemipteran biology, providing technical leadership in rearing, assay development, and troubleshooting across multiple functional teams.
- Drive innovation by (co-)developing novel methodologies, functional capabilities, and creative technical solutions to advance trait discovery and protein engineering.
- Synthesize complex research data into actionable insights, clearly communicating progress, risks, and milestones to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Be an active member of the Trait Discovery group, contributing to group innovation and troubleshooting across disciplines.
- Conduct research in accordance with all relevant HSE guidelines.
- Contribute to a congenial group environment, fostering scientific rigor, safety, and belonging.
Qualifications
Required:
- PhD degree (in the field of Entomology or related areas) with at least 10 years of relevant prior experience.
- Possess a strong publication record.
- Significant knowledge of hemipteran insect biology, rearing, and insect bioassays.
- Broad knowledge of global insect pests and their impacts.
- Familiarity with the end-to-end process of identifying, testing, and validating protein traits for insect control.
- Knowledge and understanding of protein structure and how it can be manipulated.
- Knowledge of the employment of proteins within an agricultural or entomological context.
- Proven track record of setting up physical laboratory spaces, insectaries, or specialized rearing facilities.
- Experience with USDA-APHIS or similar regulatory bodies, including the process of obtaining and maintaining permits for regulated insect species.
- Experience in evaluating protein structural data for engineering purposes.
- Experience leading autonomous research areas, ensuring goals and deliverables are well aligned with overall business strategy via interaction and communication with senior stakeholders.
Desired:
- Ability to design and validate novel in vitro and in planta bioassays, specifically overcoming the technical challenges associated with hemipteran feeding behaviors.
- Proficiency in interpreting complex biological data and using statistical tools to turn raw data into strategic recommendations.
- Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Prioritizing tasks to get infrastructure operational quickly.
- A positive, solution-oriented mindset: finding creative, non-traditional ways to solve hurdles.
- Professional ability to translate complex scientific findings into clear, actionable updates for non-specialist stakeholders and senior leadership.
- Must be able to work proficiently in a team-based, project-focused, and changing environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.

Align your degree to EB-2 requirements
Syngenta's research and regulatory roles frequently qualify for EB-2 sponsorship, which requires an advanced degree or exceptional ability. Confirm your master's or Ph.D. is in a field directly tied to the role before applying, since USCIS scrutinizes degree-to-job-title alignment closely in biotech petitions.
Understand where PERM labor certification fits
Most Syngenta Green Card sponsorships run through PERM, DOL's recruitment testing process. Your employer must advertise the role publicly and prove no qualified U.S. worker was displaced. This process typically adds six to twelve months before an I-140 petition can be filed with USCIS.
Target roles with established sponsorship patterns
Syngenta's plant biotechnology, bioinformatics, regulatory science, and field agronomy teams have historically supported Green Card filings. Focus your applications on postings in these functions rather than general operations or sales roles, which rarely progress to permanent residence sponsorship.
Research Syngenta's prevailing wage obligations early
Before accepting an offer, run your job title and location through the OFLC Wage Search to verify the prevailing wage for that role. Syngenta must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage throughout the PERM and I-140 process, so confirming this alignment protects your case from wage-related PERM denials.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified Syngenta openings
Identifying which Syngenta roles are actively linked to Green Card sponsorship history saves months of misdirected effort. Migrate Mate surfaces employer LCA and PERM filing data by occupation code, so you can see which Syngenta job titles have a documented sponsorship track record before you apply.
Clarify EB-3 eligibility for non-advanced-degree roles
If your highest credential is a bachelor's degree, EB-3 is the relevant pathway for Syngenta sponsorship. Use O*NET to confirm your occupation's standard educational requirement, since USCIS cross-checks this during adjudication. Roles classified as requiring a bachelor's degree in a specific field are well-positioned for EB-3 petitions.
Syngenta Green Card Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Syngenta sponsor Green Card visas?
Yes, Syngenta sponsors Green Cards for qualifying employees in the United States, primarily through the EB-2 and EB-3 employment-based preference categories. Sponsorship is most consistent in scientific, technical, and regulatory functions tied to its seed and crop protection research operations. Sponsorship decisions are made by the hiring team on a role-by-role basis.
Which departments at Syngenta are most likely to sponsor a Green Card?
Green Card sponsorship at Syngenta is most common in plant biotechnology, regulatory affairs, bioinformatics, agronomy research, and field science roles. These functions require specialized credentials that support EB-2 or EB-3 eligibility. Corporate support, sales, and generalist operations roles are less frequently linked to permanent residence sponsorship.
How does the Green Card application process work at Syngenta?
For most roles, Syngenta initiates PERM labor certification through DOL, which requires a structured recruitment process to demonstrate no qualified U.S. worker was available. Once PERM is certified, Syngenta files an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS. You then wait for a visa number to become current before filing for adjustment of status or consular processing.
How long does Green Card sponsorship take at Syngenta?
Total timelines vary depending on your country of birth and the preference category. PERM certification alone typically takes six to eighteen months. For applicants born in countries without significant visa backlogs, the full process from PERM filing to Green Card approval often runs two to four years when combining PERM, I-140 adjudication, and adjustment of status processing at USCIS.
How do I find Syngenta jobs that include Green Card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate filters employer job listings by verified LCA and PERM filing history, letting you identify Syngenta roles with documented sponsorship activity rather than relying solely on job posting language. Cross-reference what you find with Syngenta's careers portal to confirm current openings, then prioritize roles in research and regulatory functions where sponsorship is most established.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card sponsorship at Syngenta?
Employers sponsoring a Green Card through the PERM labor certification process must pay at least the prevailing wage for the role. The Department of Labor determines this rate based on the specific job title, location, and experience level. The prevailing wage is locked in during the PERM filing and applies through the entire Green Card process. You can look up current rates using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
