ROLE
The Fraud Experience team builds intelligent, real-time systems that safeguard Whatnot’s marketplace from malicious activity. We design, develop, and deploy end-to-end, ML-driven systems that proactively identify and mitigate fraud — blending real-time detection with transparent, user-centered enforcement.
- Lead the full architecture of fraud detection, prevention, and intervention systems — spanning machine learning, backend, and client-side components.
- Build intelligent user graphs to model behavioral patterns, detect collusion networks, and uncover account connectivity at scale.
- Design, train, and deploy both traditional ML and LLM-powered models to detect fraudulent activity across users, payments, and marketplace interactions.
- Develop scalable data pipelines and real-time inference systems capable of supporting high-volume, low-latency ML workloads.
- Create human-in-the-loop systems that continuously refine detection accuracy and adapt to evolving adversarial tactics.
- Perform deep behavioral and adversarial data analysis to surface emerging fraud trends and drive continuous system improvement.
- Stay ahead of the curve by translating new insights into adaptive, production-ready systems that evolve as fast as our adversaries.
We offer flexibility to work from home or from one of our global office hubs, and we value in-person time for planning, problem-solving, and connection. Team members in this role must live within commuting distance of our Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco or Seattle hub.

Target technical roles first
Whatnot's H-1B sponsorship concentrates in software engineering, data science, and product management. Applying to roles in these departments gives you the strongest chance of landing a position that qualifies for H-1B sponsorship at Whatnot.
Confirm sponsorship before applying
Not every open role at Whatnot includes H-1B sponsorship. Check the job listing carefully for sponsorship language, and use Migrate Mate to filter for verified H-1B sponsors so you're only applying to roles where sponsorship is confirmed.
Align your background with live commerce
Whatnot operates at the intersection of retail and technology. Candidates who can connect their engineering or product experience to marketplace platforms, real-time systems, or consumer-facing applications will stand out in the H-1B hiring process.
Understand the H-1B petition timeline
Whatnot will file your H-1B petition with USCIS after you receive an offer. The annual cap lottery runs in March, so timing your job search to align with that window improves your chances of being included in the filing cycle.
Demonstrate specialty occupation clearly
For H-1B approval, your role must qualify as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. Make sure your resume and interviews clearly reflect the technical depth and degree alignment USCIS requires.
Use your network inside Whatnot
Employee referrals carry weight at fast-growing companies like Whatnot. Connecting with current employees who hold H-1B status can give you insight into the sponsorship process and increase your visibility with the hiring team before you apply.
Whatnot H-1B Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Whatnot sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Whatnot sponsors H-1B visas. The company has a documented history of filing H-1B petitions, primarily for technical roles in engineering, product, and data. Sponsorship availability varies by role and headcount, so confirming sponsorship is offered before investing time in the application process is worthwhile.
Which roles and departments at Whatnot typically receive H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship at Whatnot is most common in software engineering, data science, and product management, where roles typically require specialized degrees that meet the specialty occupation standard. Business operations and marketing roles are less likely to be sponsored, though exceptions exist depending on the seniority and technical nature of the position.
How do I navigate the H-1B application process at Whatnot?
Once Whatnot extends an offer, their immigration team or outside counsel handles the H-1B petition filing on your behalf. The process involves a Labor Condition Application filed with the Department of Labor, followed by the USCIS petition. You'll need to provide educational credentials and employment documentation. Most candidates work through the process with support from Whatnot's legal team.
How do I find H-1B jobs at Whatnot that are open to international candidates?
Migrate Mate surfaces verified H-1B sponsors so you can search Whatnot's open roles and filter specifically for positions that include sponsorship. This saves time compared to manually reviewing job listings that don't disclose sponsorship status upfront. Focus your search on technical and product roles where Whatnot's sponsorship history is strongest.
What is the typical H-1B timeline I should expect when applying to Whatnot?
The H-1B cap lottery opens each March for an October 1 start date. If you receive an offer from Whatnot before the registration window, the company can include you in that year's lottery. Premium processing is available and reduces USCIS adjudication to around 15 business days, though Whatnot's decision to use it varies by case.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at Whatnot?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
