We ensure TDK InvenSense's success by collaborating with engineering teams (ASIC, MEMS, etc.) and developing scalable tools and test infrastructure that help engineers develop, test, debug and release products quickly. Job Title: Test Hardware & Lab Infrastructure Team Lead, Sr Staff
DESCRIPTION
The Test Hardware and Lab Infrastructure Team Lead position in the Test Engineering group is a high-impact leadership role requiring a blend of expert-level mechanical design and tactical team management. You will lead a small, specialized team responsible for the mechanical architecture, custom fixture design, and laboratory infrastructure that supports TDK InvenSense’s world-leading MEMS sensor portfolio. As a "player-coach," you will be hands-on in the design of precision testers for motion and environmental sensing while supervising CAD engineers and lab technicians. Your work will directly enable the characterization and qualification of next-generation accelerometers, gyroscopes, and integrated sensors.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor a small team of 2–3 engineers and technicians, managing project workflows, CAD design reviews, and lab maintenance schedules.
- Act as the lead designer for complex lab fixtures, including bend testers, shock testers, temperature compensation, stress/strain testers, and high-precision motion testers.
- Design and maintain specialized environments for MEMS characterization, including Allan Variance isolation chambers, vibration/shaker platforms, drop testers, and acoustic/magnetic shielding.
- Oversee the design and operation of HALT/HAST fixtures, humidity ovens, and thermal-cycling setups.
- Manage the general lab environment, including HVAC stability, nitrogen/specialty gas distribution, vacuum systems, ESD and safe workspaces.
- Supervise the maintenance and calibration of lab instruments, NI-PXI systems, thermal and motion testers and data acquisition hardware.
- Collaborate with MEMS Design, ASIC, Product, Customer Engineering and Reliability teams to translate complex testing requirements into robust mechanical and pneumatic hardware solutions.
- Maintain high standards for Documentation. BOMs, assembly drawings, facility safety protocols, and preventive maintenance logs.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- MS +7 years or BS +10 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- Proven experience leading or supervising a small technical team in an R&D or semiconductor lab environment.
- Expertise in Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks.
- Deep knowledge of mechatronics including stepper/servo motors, encoders, sensors, precision stages and pneumatics.
- Strong understanding of Semiconductor lab equipment, ESD-safe design, thermal management, and cleanroom protocols.
- Experience managing lab facility infrastructure (Gas, HVAC, Power Distribution, CDA and Vacuum systems).
- Ability to troubleshoot complex electromechanical systems and lead failure analysis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Direct experience with Motion MEMS testing (Gyros, Accelerometers, IMUs).
- Familiarity with vibration isolation tables and damping for high-sensitivity measurements (Allan Variance).
- Experience integrating mechanical fixtures with PXI/e based ATE or data acquisition systems.
- Knowledge of “C”, Python or LabView for basic automation of mechanical testers.
- Experience with vendor management for custom machining, 3D printing, and rapid prototyping.
COMPENSATION
- The starting annual base pay for this role ranges between USD $140,000.00 and $180,000.00. The actual base pay is dependent on various factors, including training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, and market conditions. This range is subject to change and may be adjusted in the future.
LOCATION
- This position is open to candidates based in San Jose, CA with a hybrid work requirement (on-site presence required). The role is also eligible for variable bonus programs and benefits.
