Align your research area to Microsoft's AI teams
Microsoft's AI internships span distinct groups: Azure AI, Microsoft Research, and Copilot engineering. Tailoring your application materials and portfolio to a specific team's published work significantly strengthens your case over a generic AI submission.
Verify your OPT timeline before applying
Microsoft's intern hiring cycles typically close months before a summer start date. If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your authorization end date covers the full internship window, including any onboarding period, before accepting an offer.
Understand which visa covers your intern status
Australian citizens can use the E-3, while some nationalities qualify for H-1B1 visa. Each has different filing mechanics and timelines. Confirming which category applies to you before the offer stage prevents delays once Microsoft's legal team initiates sponsorship paperwork.
Target Microsoft's university recruiting pipeline directly
Microsoft sources a significant share of AI intern candidates through university recruiting programs and research conference recruiting, including NeurIPS and ICML. Engaging recruiters at these venues or through your institution's career portal puts your application in the right queue.
Prepare your credentials for USCIS specialty occupation requirements
USCIS requires that an H-1B or E-3 role qualify as a specialty occupation tied to a specific degree field. For AI intern roles, gather academic transcripts and any published research that directly connects your degree to the internship's technical scope.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open AI Intern roles at Microsoft
Finding which Microsoft AI intern positions are currently open and visa-eligible can be time-consuming. Use Migrate Mate to filter active listings by role and visa type, so you're applying to positions where sponsorship is already confirmed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Microsoft sponsor H-1B visas for AI Interns?
Yes, Microsoft sponsors H-1B visas for AI Intern roles that meet USCIS specialty occupation requirements. The internship must be tied to a specific degree field, typically computer science, machine learning, or a closely related discipline. Microsoft's legal team handles the H-1B petition process once an offer is extended, but the timeline depends on when in the fiscal year the internship falls relative to the H-1B cap and lottery.
How do I apply for AI Intern jobs at Microsoft?
Applications go through Microsoft's careers portal, typically under the university recruiting section. Most AI intern roles require a resume, and some teams request a research statement or GitHub portfolio. Recruiting cycles for summer internships often open in the fall. You can also browse current visa-sponsored AI Intern openings at Microsoft through Migrate Mate, which filters listings by role type and sponsorship eligibility.
Which visa types does Microsoft use for AI Intern roles?
Microsoft commonly sponsors H-1B visas for AI Intern positions, and also files under the E-3 visa for Australian citizens and the H-1B1 visa for nationals of Chile and Singapore. For candidates already on F-1 OPT or CPT, a separate petition is typically not required during the internship itself, though conversion to H-1B sponsorship may follow a return full-time offer.
What qualifications does Microsoft expect for AI Intern candidates?
Most AI Intern roles at Microsoft require enrollment in a graduate program in computer science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or a related field. Familiarity with frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow is standard. Research-track roles within Microsoft Research typically expect prior publications or conference submissions. Team-specific requirements vary, so reviewing the job description for the exact team is essential before applying.
How do I plan my timeline around Microsoft's H-1B sponsorship process?
If your internship converts to a full-time role requiring H-1B sponsorship, USCIS only accepts H-1B cap-subject petitions once per year, with a filing window that opens April 1 for an October 1 start date. Microsoft typically initiates the process well in advance, but you should confirm your F-1 OPT or current status covers the gap between your internship end date and any H-1B approval, which can take three to six months without premium processing.
