Who We Are
Nuro is a self-driving technology company on a mission to make autonomy accessible to all. Founded in 2016, Nuro is building the world’s most scalable driver, combining cutting-edge AI with automotive-grade hardware. Nuro licenses its core technology, the Nuro Driver™, to support a wide range of applications, from robotaxis and commercial fleets to personally owned vehicles. With technology proven over years of self-driving deployments, Nuro gives the automakers and mobility platforms a clear path to AVs at commercial scale—empowering a safer, richer, and more connected future.
About The Work
- Develop and scale state-of-the-art generative models—especially diffusion architectures, flow-matching techniques, and energy-based models—for autonomous plan generation.
- Build generative models with foundation models. Leverage large language models and world foundation models for reasoning, decision making, and multi-modality generation.
- Optimize generative models using reinforcement learning to improve interactive reasoning. Explore reward modeling/learned verifier using generative models. Explore joint prediction and planning and self-play. Leverage generative models for active learning and world modeling.
- Develop controllable generative models to guide the generation process towards desired goals, conditions, and rewards.
- Collaborate across autonomy teams while developing holistic solutions to top autonomy challenges. Understand issues, propose ideas, prioritize work, and develop solutions to solve them, evaluate your solution by deploying the models on to the NuroDriver.
About You
You have deep expertise and prior experience in some or many of the following areas:
- You have a Ph.D. (preferable) or M.Sc. with 2-3 years of experience working with generative models in the lab, in industry, or both.
- Research experiences in generative models, particularly diffusion models, flow matching, and energy-based models, for robotics, including manipulation, path planning, and autonomous driving. Experiences in vision-language-action models, reinforcement learning for generative model optimization, video generation, text-to-image generation, diffusion models for LLMs, world foundation models, and other applications of generative modeling are a bonus!
- You have strong problem solving and programming skills in Python and/or C++.
- Strong culture fit and good team player.
- Demonstrated research publications in top conferences (e.g. NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, CVPR, RSS, CoRL etc.)
COMPENSATION
At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected pay range is between $160,360 and $240,540/year for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
At Nuro, we celebrate differences and are committed to a diverse workplace that fosters inclusion and psychological safety for all employees. Nuro is proud to be an equal opportunity employer and expressly prohibits any form of workplace discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, genetic information, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected characteristics.
Tips for Finding ML Engineer Jobs at Nuro
Align your portfolio to physical autonomy systems
Nuro's ML work centers on perception, motion planning, and sensor fusion for real-world deployment. Before applying, make sure your portfolio shows experience with these domains specifically, not just general deep learning or NLP projects.
Verify your OPT start date against interview timelines
If you're on F-1 OPT, Nuro can file your H-1B before your OPT expires, but your OPT end date needs to clear the interview and offer process. Build in at least 90 days of remaining OPT before targeting final-round interviews.
Request a cap-exempt H-1B pathway conversation early
If you missed the H-1B lottery, ask Nuro's recruiting team whether any of its research or lab affiliations qualify for cap-exempt filing. Some autonomous vehicle companies maintain university partnerships that open this option for ML roles.
Use Migrate Mate to filter ML Engineer openings by visa type
Nuro posts ML Engineer roles across perception, prediction, and infrastructure tracks. Use Migrate Mate to surface which open positions align with the visa category your status requires, so you apply to roles where sponsorship is already confirmed.
Prepare your degree equivalency documentation before the offer stage
USCIS requires that H-1B specialty occupation petitions show your degree directly relates to the offered role. For ML Engineer positions, a credential evaluation linking your degree to machine learning or computer science prevents delays at the I-129 stage.
Understand how PERM timing affects EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship
If long-term Green Card sponsorship matters to you, ask during negotiation whether Nuro initiates PERM labor certification for ML Engineers. DOL processing currently runs over a year, so earlier employer commitment meaningfully affects your immigration timeline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Nuro sponsor H-1B visas for ML Engineers?
Yes, Nuro sponsors H-1B visas for ML Engineer roles. The company has an active sponsorship track record for technical positions in its machine learning and autonomy teams. Because H-1B selection depends on the annual lottery run by USCIS each April, candidates already on F-1 OPT or another valid status are often in the strongest position to begin the process.
How do I apply for ML Engineer jobs at Nuro?
You can browse and apply for ML Engineer openings at Nuro directly through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship eligibility so you see only positions relevant to your status. Nuro's ML hiring typically emphasizes a technical screen followed by multiple system design and coding rounds focused on perception, modeling, or infrastructure, depending on the specific team.
Which visa types does Nuro commonly use for ML Engineers?
Nuro sponsors several visa categories for ML Engineers, including H-1B, H-1B1 visa, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for students completing degrees, J-1 visa for research-track roles, and employment-based Green Card pathways under EB-2 and EB-3 for longer-term sponsorship. The right category depends on your nationality, current status, and the specific role's requirements.
What qualifications does Nuro expect from ML Engineer candidates?
Nuro's ML Engineer roles typically require a graduate degree or equivalent industry experience in machine learning, computer science, or a closely related field. Hands-on experience with perception systems, neural network architectures, or real-time inference pipelines is strongly preferred. Research publications or contributions to open-source ML projects can differentiate candidates competing for roles on Nuro's more research-oriented teams.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for an ML Engineer at Nuro?
For H-1B sponsorship, Nuro would file your petition in April for an October 1 start date, with USCIS adjudication taking several months under standard processing. Premium processing, which USCIS typically adjudicates within 15 business days, is available and commonly used by tech employers to reduce uncertainty. Green Card sponsorship through PERM adds a separate DOL process that currently runs well over a year before an I-140 can be filed.
