Align your credentials with U.S. licensing standards
If you hold construction management or engineering credentials from outside the U.S., get them evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluation service before applying. Universities like ODU often require or strongly prefer candidates whose qualifications map clearly to U.S. degree equivalencies.
Target facilities and capital projects postings specifically
ODU's construction hiring typically runs through its facilities management and capital projects divisions, not general HR pipelines. Search for postings under those departments directly on the ODU careers portal to avoid missing roles that don't surface under broad job title searches.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open construction roles
Tracking university construction postings that explicitly support sponsorship is time-consuming. Migrate Mate filters ODU's open construction positions by visa sponsorship eligibility, so you can focus your applications on roles where your work authorization needs are already accounted for.
Ask about LCA timelines before accepting an offer
Before your start date is set, confirm that your employer has filed the Labor Condition Application with DOL. LCA certification is required before USCIS can adjudicate an H-1B petition, and delays here can push back your actual start date by several weeks.
Flag your OPT or CPT authorization early in interviews
If you're transitioning from an F-1 student visa, clarify your OPT end date and STEM extension eligibility upfront. ODU's HR team needs time to initiate H-1B cap-gap paperwork, and a late disclosure can create an authorization gap between your OPT expiry and H-1B approval.
Understand how PERM applies to permanent construction holes
If you're targeting a permanent staff position rather than a contract or project-based role, ask whether the university is open to EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship. PERM requires a prevailing wage determination and recruitment documentation, so the earlier the university starts that process, the better for your Green Card timeline.

Find Construction at Old Dominion University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Old Dominion University sponsor H-1B visas for Construction roles?
Yes, Old Dominion University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying construction positions, particularly those requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field such as construction management or civil engineering. The role must meet USCIS specialty occupation criteria, and your employer must file a certified Labor Condition Application with DOL before submitting the H-1B petition to USCIS.
How do I apply for Construction jobs at Old Dominion University?
Apply directly through ODU's official careers portal at jobs.odu.edu, where construction and facilities-related postings are listed under departments like Facilities Management or Capital Projects. Tailor your application to highlight project management experience, relevant certifications, and any U.S.-equivalent credentials. You can also browse visa-sponsorship-eligible construction roles at ODU through Migrate Mate.
Which visa types are commonly used for Construction roles at Old Dominion University?
H-1B is the most common path for construction professionals in specialty occupations requiring a degree. F-1 OPT and CPT are options for current or recent students, including those with STEM-eligible degrees in construction management or engineering. TN visas are available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying occupations. For permanent positions, ODU has sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards through the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications and experience does ODU typically expect for Construction positions?
Most sponsored construction roles at ODU require a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a closely related field. Relevant U.S. or internationally recognized certifications such as PMP or LEED can strengthen your application. Project oversight experience in institutional or large-scale commercial settings is commonly expected, and roles within facilities management often require familiarity with campus infrastructure or higher education construction environments.
How do I manage the H-1B timeline when starting a Construction role at ODU?
H-1B petitions for cap-subject applicants are filed in April for an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, cap-gap protection lets you work continuously while your petition is pending, provided your employer files before your OPT expires. For mid-year hires or cap-exempt situations, USCIS standard processing takes two to four months, with premium processing available to reduce that to roughly 15 business days.
