- Experience in developing and optimizing software for performance, scalability, and security.
- Excellent understanding of various AI agents and ability to use them as a co-pilot.

Align your portfolio to cybersecurity infrastructure work
Palo Alto Networks evaluates Principal Software Engineers on systems-level contributions, not just application development. Highlight distributed systems, cloud-native architecture, or security tooling experience in your resume and GitHub before you apply.
Confirm your visa category matches the role level
Principal-level roles carry a senior job title and specialty occupation standing that strengthens H-1B petitions. Before interviews begin, verify your visa category supports the seniority of the role, since E-3 and TN approvals depend on how the position is defined.
Target teams sponsoring across multiple visa pathways
Palo Alto Networks sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, and OPT candidates across its engineering org. Use Migrate Mate to filter open Principal Software Engineer listings by visa type and identify which teams are actively hiring sponsored candidates right now.
Get your credentials evaluated before the offer stage
If your degree is from outside the United States, obtain a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before you receive an offer. Palo Alto Networks and its immigration counsel will need this to support the specialty occupation determination in your I-129 petition.
Understand the PERM timeline before accepting a long-term offer
If you're aiming for employer-sponsored permanent residence via EB-2 or EB-3, PERM recruitment and DOL certification typically add 12 to 24 months before an I-140 can be filed. Factor this into any offer negotiation, especially if you're approaching the end of H-1B status.
Prepare for technical interviews that reflect platform-scale engineering
Principal-level interviews at Palo Alto Networks include system design rounds focused on high-throughput, security-critical infrastructure. Practicing cloud architecture and distributed system design specifically, not just algorithm problems, significantly improves your chances of clearing the final rounds.

Which visa types does Palo Alto Networks commonly use for Principal Software Engineers?
Palo Alto Networks sponsors H-1B, E-3 visa, TN visa, and F-1 OPT or CPT for Principal Software Engineers at various stages of the hiring process. For longer-term immigration, the company also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship. The right category depends on your nationality, current status, and where you are in the immigration timeline.
What qualifications does Palo Alto Networks expect for Principal Software Engineer roles?
Principal Software Engineers at Palo Alto Networks are expected to have significant experience leading large-scale systems design, ideally in cloud infrastructure, security platforms, or high-volume data pipelines. A bachelor's degree in computer science or a closely related field is standard, and candidates with advanced degrees or specialized cybersecurity experience tend to be competitive for senior-track roles.
How do I time my visa sponsorship conversation with Palo Alto Networks during the hiring process?
Raise visa sponsorship early, during or immediately after the recruiter screen, so the hiring team can confirm budget approval and loop in immigration counsel before you reach the offer stage. If you're on F-1 OPT, give the team visibility into your OPT expiration date. USCIS premium processing, currently 15 business days, is available for H-1B petitions if your start date is time-sensitive.
