INTRODUCTION
Every day, tens of millions of people come to Roblox to explore, create, play, learn, and connect with friends in 3D immersive digital experiences– all created by our global community of developers and creators.
At Roblox, we’re building the tools and platform that empower our community to bring any experience that they can imagine to life. Our vision is to reimagine the way people come together, from anywhere in the world, and on any device. We’re on a mission to connect a billion people with optimism and civility, and looking for amazing talent to help us get there.
A career at Roblox means you’ll be working to shape the future of human interaction, solving unique technical challenges at scale, and helping to create safer, more civil shared experiences for everyone.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Principal Software Engineer leading Fleet Management, you will be the overall technical lead across three pods and the person who sets the technical direction for the fleet management layer of Roblox. This is a hands-on, deeply technical leadership role that owns all of Roblox's compute capacity end to end: from low-level provisioning and the data plane, up through the control planes that operate it, and all the way to the UI and internal-facing products that let teams self-serve capacity. Your org centralizes security, maintenance operations, and the uptime of every Roblox Kubernetes cluster, and governs the internal customer contracts that drive automation across the fleet spanning Roblox data centers and cloud providers. You will guide architecture, raise the engineering bar, and make sure compute capacity supply and demand stay in balance as the fleet grows.
You will:
- Serve as the overall technical lead for three Fleet Management pods, setting and aligning the technical direction across low-level provisioning, the data plane, and the control plane and product surfaces above them.
- Architect the declarative, Kubernetes-style control planes that operate Roblox's compute fleet across on-prem and cloud, and define how capacity is provisioned, reconciled, and exposed at scale.
- Own the design of the internal customer contracts and APIs that govern automation across the fleet, so that every infrastructure team can operate capacity safely and predictably.
- Drive the strategy for self-serve capacity, including the internal-facing products and UIs that let teams request, manage, and reason about the compute they depend on.
- Centralize and raise the bar on security, maintenance operations, and the uptime of all Roblox Kubernetes clusters, defining how fleet-wide changes ship reliably without impacting production.
- Partner broadly with stakeholders inside and outside infrastructure to understand compute needs and drive innovation for our backend services, AI, and edge computing.
- Write code daily, staying deep in the systems your org owns and leading by example on the hardest design and implementation problems.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
You have:
- 10+ years of experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems and infrastructure.
- A track record as the technical anchor an organization relies on, with the leadership to set direction across multiple teams and up-level the engineers around you.
- Strong proficiency in Go, with deep experience designing and operating production services at fleet scale.
- Hands-on experience building declarative, Kubernetes-style control planes and the reconciliation patterns behind them.
- Strong proficiency with gRPC for service-to-service APIs and with SQL and Postgres for durable, high-scale state.
- Experience operating compute capacity across both on-prem data centers and cloud providers, and a feel for the realities of running fleets at the scale of hundreds of thousands of instances.
- A history of being highly cross-functional, partnering with stakeholders across and beyond infrastructure to design systems that keep compute supply and demand in balance.

Tips for Finding Principal Software Engineer Jobs at Roblox
Align your portfolio to Roblox's technical scale
Roblox evaluates principal-level candidates on distributed systems and platform infrastructure experience. Frame past work around systems that handled massive concurrency or real-time data pipelines, not just team leadership or delivery metrics.
Verify your visa category before applying
Roblox sponsors several nonimmigrant categories including H-1B, E-3, TN, and H-1B1 visa. Knowing which category fits your nationality before your first recruiter call lets you address sponsorship directly and avoid late-stage surprises during offer negotiation.
Target teams where Roblox is actively hiring
Browse open Principal Software Engineer roles on Migrate Mate to identify which Roblox teams are posting most actively. Concentrating your outreach on high-velocity teams shortens the path from application to interview pipeline.
Prepare for the principal-level system design bar
Roblox's principal interviews heavily weight system design at global scale. Practicing scenarios involving low-latency game-state synchronization or large-scale content delivery directly mirrors the problems their engineering teams face daily.
Clarify the LCA and start-date timeline early
Your employer must file a certified Labor Condition Application with DOL before any H-1B or H-1B1 visa petition reaches USCIS. At the principal level, internal approvals and compensation benchmarking add weeks, so raise the sponsorship timeline in your initial offer conversation.
Understand OPT-to-H-1B sequencing if you're on F-1
If you're currently on F-1 OPT, cap-subject H-1B petitions are only filed once per year with an October 1 start date. A principal-level offer from Roblox in the fall may mean a full year on OPT extension before your H-1B status begins.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Roblox sponsor H-1B visas for Principal Software Engineers?
Yes, Roblox sponsors H-1B visas for Principal Software Engineers. The company has a consistent sponsorship history for senior and principal engineering roles across multiple visa categories. Sponsorship typically covers the full petition process, including the Labor Condition Application filed with DOL and the I-129 petition filed with USCIS, though timelines depend on your current status and the visa category involved.
Which visa types does Roblox commonly sponsor for Principal Software Engineers?
Roblox sponsors a range of work visa categories for this role, including H-1B, H-1B1 visa for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, E-3 visa for Australian citizens, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican professionals, and F-1 OPT for recent graduates. Green Card pathways through EB-2 or EB-3 are also part of Roblox's sponsorship profile, typically initiated after you've established yourself in the role.
What qualifications does Roblox expect for a Principal Software Engineer?
Roblox expects principal-level candidates to demonstrate deep expertise in distributed systems, large-scale platform architecture, or real-time infrastructure. A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field is the baseline requirement for specialty occupation visa petitions. In practice, Roblox's principal bar also emphasizes cross-functional technical leadership, measurable system impact, and experience with platforms operating at significant global scale.
How do I apply for Principal Software Engineer jobs at Roblox?
You can find and apply for Principal Software Engineer roles at Roblox through Migrate Mate, which surfaces open positions along with verified sponsorship data for each role. When you apply, tailor your resume toward systems scale and platform engineering rather than general software delivery. Roblox's recruiter screening typically probes your sponsorship needs early, so have your visa category and timeline ready before the first call.
How does the sponsorship timeline work for a Principal Software Engineer offer at Roblox?
Timeline depends on your visa category. H-1B petitions are cap-subject and filed once a year, meaning an offer in the fall could carry a start date up to 12 months out. E-3 and TN categories move faster since they're not lottery-based and can be processed at a U.S. consulate in weeks. Roblox's internal offer and compensation approval process at the principal level adds additional lead time before any petition reaches USCIS or DOL.
