INTRODUCTION
Every day, tens of millions of people come to Roblox to explore, create, play, learn, and connect with friends in 3D immersive digital experiences– all created by our global community of developers and creators. At Roblox, we’re building the tools and platform that empower our community to bring any experience that they can imagine to life. Our vision is to reimagine the way people come together, from anywhere in the world, and on any device. We’re on a mission to connect a billion people with optimism and civility, and looking for amazing talent to help us get there. A career at Roblox means you’ll be working to shape the future of human interaction, solving unique technical challenges at scale, and helping to create safer, more civil shared experiences for everyone.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Principal Software Engineer on the Fleet Management team, you will lead the systems that provision and rebuild Roblox's global fleet across bare metal and cloud. This team owns provisioning, and MAPI, the global Machine API that turns raw capacity into production-ready infrastructure in minutes, across hundreds of thousands of machines on-prem and cloud environments, including new GPU and new AI infrastructure. You will shape the technical direction for this critical compute platform and unify diverse hardware and environment-specific workflows behind MAPI and drive large-scale maintenance operations like firmware updates and hardware tuning.
You Will
- Lead the Machine Bootstrap pod in building and evolving provisioning and fleet management at massive scale.
- Architect and extend MAPI, the unified Machine API that abstracts bare-metal, GPU hosts, and cloud instances behind a single global interface.
- Ship fleet-wide maintenance operations (BIOS updates, firmware updates, configuration changes) to hundreds of thousands of machines through MAPI.
- Drive best-in-class provisioning performance, minutes to fully rebuild a machine from scratch.
- Evaluate and integrate new hardware platforms including GPU servers and AI accelerators into the provisioning pipeline.
- Collaborate across Compute, Networking, and Cloud teams on the full machine lifecycle from rack-and-stack to production.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 8+ years of experience with strong expertise in distributed systems and infrastructure.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent field.
- Strong proficiency in Go, C/C++, Rust or other system level programming languages.
- Experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems that other engineering teams depend on.
- Familiarity with bare-metal concepts (PXE/iPXE, DHCP, BMC/IPMI/Redfish, OS imaging) is a plus; deep low-level systems experience is a bonus, not a requirement.
- Interest in modern server hardware including GPU servers, AI accelerators, and cloud infrastructure.
- A track record of building high-performance automation at fleet scale and reducing toil through developer-friendly APIs.
COMPENSATION
For roles that are based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay for this position is as shown below. The actual base pay is dependent upon a variety of job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs and market demand. Align your portfolio to platform scale
Roblox Principal roles require demonstrated ownership at scale, think systems serving tens of millions of concurrent users. Frame your portfolio around infrastructure, engine, or platform impact rather than feature-level contributions to stand out in screening.
Confirm your visa category before applying
Roblox sponsors several nonimmigrant categories including H-1B, E-3, TN, and H-1B1. Knowing which category fits your nationality and credentials before outreach lets you answer recruiter eligibility questions with confidence and avoids late-stage offer complications.
Target teams with chronic staffing depth
Roblox's infrastructure, monetization, and safety engineering orgs frequently post Principal-level roles. Focusing your application on these verticals increases your odds of reaching a hiring manager who has sponsored international candidates before and understands the process.
Request PERM clarity before signing
If permanent residency matters to you, ask the recruiter whether the Principal role is eligible for PERM-based EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship before you accept. DOL's PERM process has significant lead times, and the earlier you align on this, the better your long-term planning.
Use Migrate Mate to track open Principal roles
Principal openings at Roblox move quickly and aren't always flagged as visa-friendly on general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter Roblox Principal jobs by the visa types you're eligible for, so you're applying to roles where sponsorship is already confirmed.
Build your H-1B specialty occupation case early
USCIS requires that H-1B roles constitute a specialty occupation, meaning a specific degree in a directly related field. For Principal software or data roles at Roblox, gather transcripts, degree evaluations, and job description language that ties your field of study to the position's technical requirements.

Find Principal at Roblox JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Roblox sponsor H-1B visas for Principals?
Yes, Roblox sponsors H-1B visas for Principal-level roles across its technology and software teams. The company has a consistent pattern of filing H-1B petitions for senior individual contributors in engineering, data, and product disciplines. If you're on an existing H-1B, Roblox can file a transfer petition, meaning you don't need to wait for a new lottery cycle.
How do I apply for Principal jobs at Roblox?
Apply directly through Roblox's careers portal and flag your visa status early in the recruiter screen. Principal roles at Roblox involve multiple technical and cross-functional interview rounds, so prepare to demonstrate system design expertise and organizational impact. You can also browse current Principal openings at Roblox filtered by visa type on Migrate Mate to confirm sponsorship eligibility before applying.
Which visa types does Roblox commonly sponsor for Principal roles?
Roblox sponsors a range of visa categories for Principal positions, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, H-1B1 for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, and F-1 OPT. For longer-term pathways, Roblox also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for qualifying Principal roles, typically through the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications does Roblox expect for Principal-level positions?
Roblox Principal roles generally require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, engineering, or a closely related technical field, along with substantial senior-level experience in a relevant domain. You're expected to show scope of ownership beyond individual delivery, including cross-team technical leadership, architectural decision-making, and measurable platform or product impact at significant scale.
How do I plan my timeline if Roblox sponsors my H-1B?
If you're subject to the H-1B cap, the annual lottery registration window opens in March and employment can begin no earlier than October 1 of that fiscal year. Roblox can file your petition after lottery selection, but premium processing through USCIS is available if you need a faster adjudication decision. Factor in at least six months from offer to start date when planning around a cap-subject H-1B.
