INTRODUCTION
Every day, tens of millions of people come to Roblox to explore, create, play, learn, and connect with friends in 3D immersive digital experiences– all created by our global community of developers and creators.
At Roblox, we’re building the tools and platform that empower our community to bring any experience that they can imagine to life. Our vision is to reimagine the way people come together, from anywhere in the world, and on any device. We’re on a mission to connect a billion people with optimism and civility, and looking for amazing talent to help us get there.
A career at Roblox means you’ll be working to shape the future of human interaction, solving unique technical challenges at scale, and helping to create safer, more civil shared experiences for everyone.
WHY SAFETY?
At Roblox, we strive to connect a billion people with optimism and civility, and the Safety organization’s mission is to become the leader in civil immersive online communities. We systematically detect, remove, and prevent problematic accounts, content and behavior, and we make Roblox accounts secure and free from compromise. We cover a broad area of the tech spectrum, including machine learning, classifiers for 3D models, experimentation, automation, detection workflows, and AI-powered text filters. Aligned and partnering with product teams, we use this toolbelt to discover new opportunities, influence and shape the product roadmap and prioritization, build safety products, and measure the impact on our community of users and developers. In doing so, we keep Roblox safe, civil, and inclusive, and we foster positive relationships between people around the world.
WHY Safety Applications?
As we scale, the complexity and volume of safety threats have grown exponentially, making Trust and Safety the single most critical engineering problem we face. The platform’s ability to achieve its mission hinges entirely on the foundational tooling we build.
We are not just responding to incidents; we are building the scalable operating system for all of Roblox’s Trust & Safety strategy. As a Senior Engineer on the Safety Application pod within the Safety Experience, you will be instrumental in developing our in-house safety applications. This role emphasizes building intuitive, scalable, and AI-agentic-powered tooling for daily Roblox safety acts. If you are passionate about solving complex, high-impact problems in an adversarial landscape, this is the team for you. You will report to the Engineering Manager of the Safety Application Team.
YOU WILL:
- Architect and Lead End-to-End Systems: Assume ultimate technical ownership for the lifecycle of complex, full-stack systems within Safety labeling and Investigative tooling. Drive the technical strategy from specification through implementation, rollout, and iteration, actively shaping and influencing the pod's broader roadmap.
- Spearhead Cross-Functional Alignment: Act as the primary technical anchor for Operations, Product Managers, and partner safety pods. Take the lead in resolving highly ambiguous workflows, translating complex business pain points into scalable, extensible technical architectures while proactively managing tech debt and long-term platformization goals.
- Pioneer Architectural Vision: Define and drive the architectural direction for the next generation of safety applications. Lead the integration of advanced AI methodologies (including LLMs and agentic workflows) to build highly effective, scalable moderation solutions.
- Design and Scale Core Primitives: Architect, build, and evangelize shared moderation primitives (e.g., Compliance infrastructure, Quality Assurance, Traffic Routing, workforce management, and agentic AI labeling frameworks). Empower external integrator teams by creating frictionless, self-serve onboarding pathways for new safety surfaces.
- Drive Multi-Quarter Initiatives: Lead large-scale, cross-organizational technical initiatives. Navigate complex dependencies, resolve cross-team blockers, and align disparate groups to ensure the widespread adoption and operational success of our core safety applications.
- Act as a Technical Multiplier: Elevate the engineering standards of the team. Take responsibility not just for your own project execution, but for mentoring engineers, driving design reviews, and establishing best practices across the safety platform ecosystem.
- Partner with Leadership: Partner closely with engineering leadership to define technical priorities, reporting directly to the Manager of Safety Applications.
YOU HAVE:
- 7+ years of experience in software development.
- Distributed Systems Architecture: Proven ability to design and implement robust, high-throughput microservices (handling thousands of requests per second) while maintaining a strict focus on system safety and security.
- Safety-Driven Mindset: A strong commitment to designing, implementing, and maintaining systems that prioritize user safety, data integrity, and compliance with safety policies.
- Equivalent experience or a BS in Computer Science, Applied Math, Physics, Engineering, Statistics, or another technical field.
- Curious to learn new technologies and systematically grow your skills.
YOU ARE:
- Experienced (7+ years): You have extensive experience as a full-stack engineer, proficient in both front-end and back-end development, working on complex, production-grade systems end-to-end.
- Analytical & Data-Driven: You possess a strong ability to instrument, collect, and analyze user interaction data (e.g., A/B testing, usage metrics) to inform design decisions and continuously maximize user impact and product performance.
- Versatile & Adaptable: You are proficient across multiple programming languages, frameworks, and technologies (e.g., modern React, #Golang, Python, relational/NoSQL databases, cloud platforms) and can quickly shift focus and master new skills to meet project demands.
- Team-Player & Technical Leader: You are a collaborative team member who actively mentors peers, drives technical excellence, and takes ownership of leading and delivering key features and projects across team boundaries.
- AI native: You are eager to define and build AI-centric solutions, incorporating modern machine learning and agentic AI capabilities directly into the core user experience and system architecture.

Tips for Finding Senior Software Development Engineer Jobs at Roblox
Tailor your portfolio to Roblox's platform scale
Roblox runs systems serving tens of millions of concurrent users. Before applying, reframe your resume and GitHub projects around distributed systems, real-time infrastructure, or game engine work. Surface metrics that reflect scale, not just features shipped.
Identify which visa pathway fits your profile
Roblox sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, H-1B1 visa, and F-1 OPT among others. Knowing which category applies to your nationality before your first recruiter call lets you ask sharper questions and avoid confusion when the offer stage begins.
Align your OPT start date with Roblox's hiring cycles
Roblox recruits heavily in the first quarter for mid-year start dates. If you're on F-1 OPT, time your application so your work authorization covers the expected onboarding window, and confirm your STEM OPT extension eligibility if you need extra runway.
Confirm H-1B cap exemption does not apply here
Roblox is a for-profit technology company, so H-1B petitions it files are cap-subject. That means your petition enters the annual lottery, with the cap registration window opening in March. Factor the April 1 earliest start date into any negotiation around your offer timeline.
Ask explicitly about LCA wage level during offer negotiation
Roblox files a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before sponsoring any H-1B. The LCA wage level assigned to your role affects whether your offer is compliant. Request clarity on the SOC code and prevailing wage level before signing, not after.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Roblox sponsor H-1B visas for Senior Software Development Engineers?
Yes, Roblox sponsors H-1B visas for Senior Software Development Engineers. Because Roblox is a for-profit company, these petitions are cap-subject and must go through the annual H-1B lottery. Registration opens in March each year, and the earliest a cap-subject H-1B visa can take effect is October 1. If you're already in H-1B status with another employer, a transfer to Roblox is possible without re-entering the lottery.
How do I apply for Senior Software Development Engineer jobs at Roblox?
Applications go through Roblox's careers portal, but finding roles that explicitly support visa sponsorship takes extra filtering. Migrate Mate lets you browse Senior Software Development Engineer openings at Roblox with sponsorship already confirmed, which removes the guesswork before you spend time applying. Once you've identified a role, expect a recruiter screen, multiple technical rounds focused on systems design and coding, and a final hiring loop.
Which visa types does Roblox commonly sponsor for Senior Software Development Engineers?
Roblox sponsors several visa categories for this role, including H-1B for most nationalities, E-3 visa for Australian citizens, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals, H-1B1 visa for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, and F-1 OPT or STEM OPT for recent graduates. For longer-term immigration, Roblox also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship, which typically begins after you've established tenure in the role.
What qualifications does Roblox expect for Senior Software Development Engineer roles?
Roblox typically expects a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, which also satisfies the specialty occupation requirement for H-1B purposes. Beyond the degree, senior-level roles emphasize distributed systems experience, proficiency in C++ or other performance-critical languages, and a track record of owning large engineering workstreams. Contributions to real-time or game-platform systems are especially relevant given Roblox's technical environment.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take if I receive an offer from Roblox?
Timeline depends on your visa category. For H-1B, if you're entering the lottery, you're looking at a minimum of several months between registration in March and an October 1 start. For E-3 and TN, consular processing can move significantly faster, sometimes within a few weeks of your offer. USCIS premium processing is available for H-1B petitions and reduces USCIS adjudication time to 15 business days once your petition is filed, though it doesn't affect the October 1 cap date.
