At Roblox, we’re building the tools and platform that empower our community to bring any experience that they can imagine to life. Our vision is to reimagine the way people come together, from anywhere in the world, and on any device. We’re on a mission to connect a billion people with optimism and civility, and looking for amazing talent to help us get there.
A career at Roblox means you’ll be working to shape the future of human interaction, solving unique technical challenges at scale, and helping to create safer, more civil shared experiences for everyone.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Why Content Safety?
As a Principal Machine Learning Engineer for Content Safety, you will define the future of proactive moderation, driving immense social impact through cutting-edge, innovative ML solutions, focused on critical and ambiguous safety challenges.
You will set the 3-5 year technical strategy and architectural blueprint for how Roblox uses machine learning for content moderation. You will own the architectural and execution roadmap of massive-scale ML systems that mitigate violative UGC content before it impacts our community.
You will feel a deep sense of responsibility in proactively protecting our community thoughtfully and fairly, while balancing user freedom with platform civility. Your efforts will ensure Roblox remains one of the safest places on the internet for our broad community of over 100 million daily active users.
You will:
- Define and Own the Technical Vision: Define and lead the multi-year technical vision, architectural strategy, and execution for machine learning solutions in Content Safety, ensuring these systems proactively and effectively detect and mitigate violative content at massive scale.
- Strategic Stakeholder Partnership: Collaborate with executive-level Product, Data Science, Policy, and Operations leaders to define and prioritize the strategic machine learning roadmap, influencing product strategy and demonstrating the impact of ML on user trust and safety outcomes.
- Lead Innovation: Oversee the adoption and safe deployment of innovative machine learning techniques (e.g., transfer-learning, self-supervised learning, quantization, LoRA, distillation).
- Drive End-to-End Product Development: You will not just model; you will build. You will work cross-functionally to construct datasets from scratch where none exist, build auto-labeling pipelines, and ship solutions to solve novel technical problems.
- Ship Code, Not Just Models: Expect to spend roughly 30-40% of your time on backend and integration work. You will be responsible for integrating your work into the production stack, leveraging modern AI coding tools (e.g., Cursor) to accelerate velocity and handle infrastructure complexity.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
You have:
- 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and operating large-scale, high-impact machine learning systems in a production environment.
- A proven track record of successfully setting the long-term technical direction for an entire ML domain, demonstrating the ability to take ambiguous problems from concept to scaled production impact.
- Deep expertise in advanced ML architectures and techniques, including Computer Vision (CV) and/or Vision-Language Models (VLMs).
- Expertise in architecting scalable, real-time ML inference services and robust data pipelines.
- Demonstrated success in leading and resolving high-stakes, cross-functional conflicts and technical disagreements, with an ability to build consensus among diverse stakeholders.
- Exceptional product sense and strategic planning ability: able to translate platform safety requirements into an achievable, iterative technical roadmap.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
You are:
- A Visionary Architect: Capable of synthesizing complex business and safety goals into a clear, compelling, and actionable technical strategy.
- A Pragmatic Builder: You are scrappy and impact-oriented. You view undefined data and messy systems as opportunities to build structure rather than blockers to progress.
- Comfortable with Ambiguity: You thrive in undefined or open-ended problem spaces, providing structure, clarity, and decisive direction to your teams.
- An Inspiring Leader: Passionate about developing the next generation of technical leaders, managers, and engineers.
- An Executive Communicator: Highly effective at communicating complex technical concepts to both engineering teams and non-technical executive leadership.
- Committed to Ethical AI: Dedicated to building ML systems that are fair, transparent, and operate with the utmost responsibility toward user safety and platform civility.

Tips for Finding Principal Engineer Jobs at Roblox
Tailor your portfolio to platform scale
Roblox Principal Engineers own systems serving tens of millions of concurrent users. Frame your experience around distributed systems, real-time infrastructure, or developer platform work. Generic backend experience won't differentiate you at this level.
Clarify your visa category before interviewing
Roblox sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, and H-1B1 visas. If you're Australian or Canadian, confirming your category early prevents misalignment with their legal team during offer negotiation, since each visa has different filing timelines and documentation requirements.
Target teams with active platform buildouts
Roblox's hiring for Principal Engineers clusters around core platform, economy, and creator tooling orgs. Identifying which product area is actively scaling helps you pitch to hiring managers where sponsorship decisions are most likely to move quickly.
Request a pre-offer sponsorship confirmation
Before the final interview loop, ask your recruiter to confirm the role is open to sponsored candidates. Principal Engineer roles at Roblox often have global applicant pools, and aligning on this before the offer stage avoids a last-minute breakdown.
Account for USCIS adjudication in your start date
If your role requires a new H-1B filing rather than a transfer, standard USCIS processing runs three to five months. Premium processing cuts that to 15 business days. Build this into your negotiated start date so neither side is caught short.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active openings
Roblox posts Principal Engineer roles across multiple teams at any given time, and not all require the same technical track. Use Migrate Mate to filter Roblox openings by visa sponsorship type so you apply to roles already matched to your immigration situation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Roblox sponsor H-1B visas for Principal Engineers?
Yes, Roblox sponsors H-1B visas for Principal Engineer roles. They have a consistent pattern of filing on behalf of senior engineering hires, including both new H-1B cap-subject petitions and transfers for candidates already holding H-1B status. If you're mid-process on an existing H-1B, a transfer is typically faster since it doesn't require waiting for a new cap cycle.
How do I apply for Principal Engineer jobs at Roblox?
Start on the Roblox careers page and filter for Principal Engineer roles by team or product area. Before applying, review the job description carefully for indicators of which platform domain the team owns, since Roblox's Principal Engineer roles vary significantly across infrastructure, gameplay, and creator tooling tracks. You can also browse verified sponsorship-eligible openings at Roblox on Migrate Mate to find roles already filtered for your visa type.
Which visa types does Roblox commonly use for Principal Engineer hires?
Roblox sponsors several nonimmigrant categories for Principal Engineers, including H-1B, H-1B1 visa for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, E-3 visa for Australian citizens, and TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals. For candidates pursuing permanent residence, Roblox also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship. F-1 OPT is also accepted for candidates within their authorized work period.
What qualifications does Roblox expect for Principal Engineer candidates?
Roblox typically looks for Principal Engineers with deep experience in large-scale distributed systems, real-time platforms, or developer infrastructure. At this level, the expectation is not just technical depth but cross-functional influence: you're expected to set technical direction, not just execute it. A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related engineering field is generally required to satisfy specialty occupation requirements under the H-1B standard.
How do I think about timing if I need Roblox to file a new H-1B for me?
The H-1B cap opens for registrations each March, with a lottery selection shortly after. If selected, the earliest employment start date is October 1. That means if you're starting from scratch without an existing H-1B, you could be looking at a gap of several months to over a year depending on when you get an offer. Candidates on F-1 OPT can often bridge this period if their OPT authorization covers the interim window.
