At Roblox, we’re building the tools and platform that empower our community to bring any experience that they can imagine to life. Our vision is to reimagine the way people come together, from anywhere in the world, and on any device. We’re on a mission to connect a billion people with optimism and civility, and looking for amazing talent to help us get there. A career at Roblox means you’ll be working to shape the future of human interaction, solving unique technical challenges at scale, and helping to create safer, more civil shared experiences for everyone.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Principal Software Engineer on our Creator Services team, you will have an immediate impact on the building blocks of Roblox itself. You will be the technical leader for multiple teams of engineers. To give some examples of what we do, we run the mission-critical Cross-server Messaging Service, which is crucial for Roblox game developers to implement leaderboards, cross-server announcements, live operations and more. We own the developer APIs for HTTP calls and player traversal within and between games. We own the platform for all of Roblox’s Cloud HTTP APIs, enabling internal teams to support creator automation of tasks like community management, CI/CD and in-game economy management. If you enjoy working on modern distributed systems, products for developers, C# and C++ software, and networking challenges alongside highly-experienced and passionate engineers, you will be right at home on our growing Creator Services team.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- You have 7+ years of industry experience as a software engineer.
- You are deeply familiar and regularly work with concepts like stream processing, leader election, RPC, retry strategies, etc.
- You have worked on deep and challenging problems in complex networked codebases, with 3+ years of experience in C++ to support working on full stack features that involve the Roblox engine & our backend systems.
- You are familiar with raw & managed memory access, pointers, thread safety, locking primitives, inter-process communication methods, network sockets, HTTP etc.
- You can jump with ease between Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, iOS, and other platforms. You understand where platform-specific code is relevant.
- You build systems with proper telemetry, logging, operations and automated testing in mind.
- You want to learn and stay up-to-date on technology developments, particularly in distributed systems.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- You will own the platform for product teams at Roblox to expose their APIs, authorize access to them, publish docs, and communicate with users.
- You will develop new products and features that help creators make complex experiences including live game operations at many-million-player scale.
- You will support core systems at massive scale including how players move between game servers, how game servers communicate with each other, and how experiences interact with on and off platform services.
- Your work has the potential to directly move company metrics (e.g. through reducing loading times).
- You will build solutions that will make Roblox work better on every device.
- You will work on every application Roblox develops, from mobile phone clients to cloud-based servers and data pipelines.
- You will take ownership of projects throughout their full lifecycles.

Tailor your portfolio to platform scale
Roblox Principal Engineers own systems serving tens of millions of concurrent users. Frame your experience around distributed systems, real-time infrastructure, or developer platform work. Generic backend experience won't differentiate you at this level.
Clarify your visa category before interviewing
Roblox sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, and H-1B1 visas. If you're Australian or Canadian, confirming your category early prevents misalignment with their legal team during offer negotiation, since each visa has different filing timelines and documentation requirements.
Target teams with active platform buildouts
Roblox's hiring for Principal Engineers clusters around core platform, economy, and creator tooling orgs. Identifying which product area is actively scaling helps you pitch to hiring managers where sponsorship decisions are most likely to move quickly.
Request a pre-offer sponsorship confirmation
Before the final interview loop, ask your recruiter to confirm the role is open to sponsored candidates. Principal Engineer roles at Roblox often have global applicant pools, and aligning on this before the offer stage avoids a last-minute breakdown.
Account for USCIS adjudication in your start date
If your role requires a new H-1B filing rather than a transfer, standard USCIS processing runs three to five months. Premium processing cuts that to 15 business days. Build this into your negotiated start date so neither side is caught short.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active openings
Roblox posts Principal Engineer roles across multiple teams at any given time, and not all require the same technical track. Use Migrate Mate to filter Roblox openings by visa sponsorship type so you apply to roles already matched to your immigration situation.

Find Principal Engineer at Roblox JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Roblox sponsor H-1B visas for Principal Engineers?
Yes, Roblox sponsors H-1B visas for Principal Engineer roles. They have a consistent pattern of filing on behalf of senior engineering hires, including both new H-1B cap-subject petitions and transfers for candidates already holding H-1B status. If you're mid-process on an existing H-1B, a transfer is typically faster since it doesn't require waiting for a new cap cycle.
How do I apply for Principal Engineer jobs at Roblox?
Start on the Roblox careers page and filter for Principal Engineer roles by team or product area. Before applying, review the job description carefully for indicators of which platform domain the team owns, since Roblox's Principal Engineer roles vary significantly across infrastructure, gameplay, and creator tooling tracks. You can also browse verified sponsorship-eligible openings at Roblox on Migrate Mate to find roles already filtered for your visa type.
Which visa types does Roblox commonly use for Principal Engineer hires?
Roblox sponsors several nonimmigrant categories for Principal Engineers, including H-1B, H-1B1 for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, E-3 for Australian citizens, and TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals. For candidates pursuing permanent residence, Roblox also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship. F-1 OPT is also accepted for candidates within their authorized work period.
What qualifications does Roblox expect for Principal Engineer candidates?
Roblox typically looks for Principal Engineers with deep experience in large-scale distributed systems, real-time platforms, or developer infrastructure. At this level, the expectation is not just technical depth but cross-functional influence: you're expected to set technical direction, not just execute it. A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related engineering field is generally required to satisfy specialty occupation requirements under the H-1B standard.
How do I think about timing if I need Roblox to file a new H-1B for me?
The H-1B cap opens for registrations each March, with a lottery selection shortly after. If selected, the earliest employment start date is October 1. That means if you're starting from scratch without an existing H-1B, you could be looking at a gap of several months to over a year depending on when you get an offer. Candidates on F-1 OPT can often bridge this period if their OPT authorization covers the interim window.
