About Redwood Materials
Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling — keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2017, we're delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.
Engineering Test Technician, Energy Storage
As an early member of a new engineering technician team, you will play a key role in building, setting up, and running tests to support the development of a new product at Redwood Materials. You'll work hands-on across mechanical, electrical, and basic software tools to help validate product performance and reliability. You will support all phases of the hardware development lifecycle from early design validation and long-term reliability testing to final process validation by assembling test setups, operating equipment safely, capturing data, and troubleshooting issues as they arise. This role requires a proactive, can-do attitude with careful attention to detail and a strong safety mindset.
Hours: Full-time, Days
Responsibilities Will Include:
- Build, set up, and execute validation tests for a new electromechanical product
- Partner with cross-functional teams (design, reliability, and abuse engineers) to support FMEAs and test plan execution
- Assemble, install, and maintain test infrastructure such as fixtures, sensors, actuators, chambers, and power supplies
- Operate test equipment, follow procedures, and ensure safe handling of high-voltage systems and lab hardware
- Collect, organize, and document test data, observations, and results clearly and consistently
- Perform basic failure triage and support failure analysis through teardown, inspections, and root-cause investigations
- Troubleshoot test setups and hardware issues; escalate and collaborate to resolve blockers quickly
- Support test automation and data logging tools (e.g., running scripts, validating outputs, contributing small updates as needed)
- Support New Product Introduction (NPI) line operations by assisting with product assembly, build readiness, and day-to-day troubleshooting. Create, update, and maintain build documentation, including work instructions, assembly procedures, and change logs to ensure accurate and repeatable processes
- Support with the management of lab inventory, organization, and power infrastructure. Assembly and validation of high-voltage harnesses and electrical sub-systems, including wiring, terminations, and integration while ensuring full compliance with electrical safety requirements and site policies
Desired Qualifications:
- Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent hands-on experience in mechanical, electrical, mechatronics, or related fields
- 3+ years of experience in a lab, manufacturing, or test environment (technician, engineering tech, or similar role)
- Experience working with or around high-voltage systems (400–2000VDC and 480–800VAC) and strong safety discipline (LOTO, PPE, safe work practices)
- Strong hands-on skills with mechanical assembly, wiring, sensors, instrumentation, and lab equipment
- Comfortable following test procedures, maintaining detailed documentation, and producing clear test summaries
- Familiarity with basic scripting or automation tools (Python a plus) and the ability to learn new tools quickly
- Strong communication and teamwork skills; able to work effectively with engineers and stakeholders across levels
- A get-it-done attitude—willing to jump in, own tasks end-to-end, and do what's needed to support the team
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform essential physical tasks such as standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting (up to 25 lbs), typing, and performing repetitive motions
- Manual dexterity to work with small components under a microscope for extended periods, including precision soldering and handling heavy copper assemblies
Working Conditions:
- Ability to work in working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time
- Occasional travel required and flexibility to work weekends, nights, or on call as needed

Align your credentials to battery manufacturing
Redwood Materials works at the intersection of electrochemistry, metallurgy, and process engineering. Before applying, map your degree and experience to those domains explicitly. A chemical engineering background with materials processing coursework is a stronger fit than a general engineering resume.
Target roles that match your visa type
Not every Engineering opening at Redwood carries the same sponsorship pathway. F-1 OPT and CPT work well for early-career roles, while H-1B and E-3 suits are more common for mid-level positions. Review the job description for any specialty occupation language before you apply.
Prepare PERM documentation early for EB roles
If Redwood is sponsoring you for an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card, the PERM labor certification requires documenting that no qualified U.S. worker was available. Gather your educational transcripts and employment verification letters now so you're not scrambling once the process starts.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Engineering roles
Redwood Materials posts Engineering roles across battery recycling and manufacturing functions. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for positions where Redwood has sponsored your visa type before, so you're applying where the pathway already exists.
Negotiate your offer before the H-1B cap lottery
If you need an H-1B and don't have cap-exempt status, USCIS only accepts registrations in March for an October start. Get your offer letter and start the employer registration process well before the March window closes to avoid losing an entire year.

Find Engineering at Redwood Materials JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Redwood Materials sponsor H-1B visas for Engineers?
Yes, Redwood Materials sponsors H-1B visas for Engineering roles. The company's manufacturing and battery recycling operations require specialized technical skills that qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS criteria. Your employer will need to file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL and submit an I-129 petition to USCIS on your behalf before your employment begins.
How do I apply for Engineering jobs at Redwood Materials?
You can find open Engineering positions at Redwood Materials through their careers page or by using Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship history so you can focus on positions where your visa type has been sponsored before. Tailor your application to highlight hands-on experience in battery materials, electrochemistry, or process engineering, since those are the core technical areas Redwood hires for.
Which visa types does Redwood Materials commonly sponsor for Engineering roles?
Redwood Materials sponsors a range of visa types for Engineering positions, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates, and EB-2 and EB-3 for permanent residence pathways. The right visa depends on your nationality, degree level, and where you are in your career.
What qualifications does Redwood Materials look for in Engineering candidates?
Redwood typically hires engineers with backgrounds in chemical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, or related fields, with experience relevant to battery recycling, hydrometallurgy, or manufacturing process development. For visa sponsorship purposes, your degree must align with the specific role under USCIS specialty occupation standards, so a degree in a directly related field carries more weight than a general engineering background.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for an Engineering role at Redwood Materials?
Timelines vary by visa type. An E-3 or TN can move quickly, sometimes within a few weeks of an offer. H-1B petitions are tied to the annual cap lottery with an October 1 start date, meaning the process spans several months if you need a new cap-subject petition. EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship involves PERM labor certification, which can take a year or more before USCIS adjudicates the immigrant petition.
