INTRODUCTION
Research Scientists at Riot combine deep technical expertise across machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), experimental design, and systems engineering to invent new ways players experience games. As a Principal Research Scientist, you operate at the frontier of what's possible and set the standard for how research is conducted and how it translates into extraordinary gameplay.
As a Principal Research Scientist in Tech Research, you will lead a small, cross-functional team focused on building AI-powered gameplay prototypes. These prototypes are not paper exercises; instead, they are playable, opinionated explorations of new game mechanics, agent behaviors, and player experiences enabled by modern AI. You will be responsible for identifying promising research directions, translating them into concrete gameplay experiments, and driving them from early concept through working prototypes that influence game teams. You will be the technical and creative lead on complex, ambiguous problems where success requires strong judgment, rapid iteration, and an ability to balance research rigor with hands-on building. You will set the vision and quality bar, leading by example in various capacities, including writing code, shaping robust systems, and mentoring team members. You will lead AI-driven gameplay exploration who is tasked with rapidly testing new ideas through playable prototypes, rigorous evaluation, and real player insight. Your team will identify emerging research with the potential to meaningfully change gameplay, turn it into concrete gameplay experiments, and work with game teams to transform validated breakthroughs into options Riot can confidently commit to.
Responsibilities:
- Define and lead AI-powered gameplay research directions, translating emerging ML/AI capabilities into concrete, playable game prototypes
- Build, lead, and mentor a small cross-functional team, setting technical direction while remaining deeply hands-on
- Own research and prototyping roadmaps, milestones, and risk management for multi-quarter initiatives
- Work closely with game teams to understand player goals and design constraints, ensuring prototypes are grounded in real gameplay needs
- Rapidly iterate on prototypes, balancing research rigor with playability, performance, and developer usability
- Stay current with academic and industry advances in AI for games, reinforcement learning, generative models, and agent systems
- Communicate vision, progress, and learnings clearly to stakeholders, helping teams understand both what works and what doesn't
Required Qualifications:
- MS in Computer Science or equivalent with 6+ years research experience or BS in Computer Science or equivalent with 8+ years research experience
- Strong background in applied or foundational research, with experience leading projects through hypothesis-driven experimentation
- 2+ years of experience in machine learning for sequential decision-making, agents, or complex systems (e.g., RL, imitation learning, planning, or hybrid approaches)
- Proficiency in C, C++, or Python
- Demonstrated contributions to public research (e.g., publications, talks, open-source projects)
- Experience designing and implementing complex systems that integrate ML with real-time or interactive environments
- Expertise with PyTorch or TensorFlow
- Experience working in commercial game engines for prototyping or production
- Strong understanding of gameplay systems, game loops, and real-time constraints
- Experience collaborating closely with designers and engineers in a game development context
For this role, you'll find success through craft expertise, a collaborative spirit, and decision-making that prioritizes the delight of players. We will be looking at your past studies, experience, and your personal relationship with games. If you embody player empathy and care about players' experiences, this could be your role!

Frame your portfolio around systems-level impact
Riot's Principal-level hiring focuses on candidates who've owned cross-functional systems, not just shipped features. Reframe your resume and portfolio to show scope, not just output. Quantify the scale of systems you've architected or led.
Research which teams sponsor consistently
Not every team at Riot hires at the Principal level with equal frequency. Check DOL's OFLC disclosure data to identify which disciplines and job titles Riot files for most often. Target those teams specifically in your outreach and applications.
Get recruiter clarity on sponsorship before interviews
Ask your Riot recruiter directly which visa categories the role supports before the panel interview stage. Principal roles occasionally involve multi-team alignment on headcount, and confirming sponsorship intent early prevents late-stage surprises in the offer process.
Prepare your PERM documentation for Green Card readiness
For EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship, Riot's legal team initiates PERM labor certification through DOL. Gather official degree credentials, international transcript evaluations, and employment verification letters now. PERM can take 12 to 18 months, and delays often trace back to missing documentation.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Principal openings by visa type
Searching broadly across job boards wastes time at the Principal level. Use Migrate Mate to filter Riot Games' open Principal roles by the visa categories they sponsor, so every application you submit is one where sponsorship is already on the table.

Find Principal at Riot Games JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Riot Games sponsor H-1B visas for Principals?
Yes, Riot Games sponsors H-1B visas for Principal-level roles. Riot has an established sponsorship process and works with immigration counsel to file H-1B petitions for qualified candidates. Because the H-1B is subject to an annual lottery with an April registration window, timing your offer and start date around that cycle matters, especially if you're transitioning from a different visa status.
Which visa types does Riot Games commonly use for Principal roles?
Riot sponsors a range of visa categories for Principal positions, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates, J-1, and immigrant pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for Green Card sponsorship. The right category depends on your nationality, current status, and whether you're seeking a temporary or permanent work authorization pathway.
What qualifications and experience does Riot Games expect for Principal roles?
Principal roles at Riot typically require deep domain expertise in a specific discipline, whether that's engineering, game design, production, or data. Expect eight or more years of relevant experience, with clear evidence of leading complex, multi-team initiatives. Riot places particular weight on candidates who can influence technical or creative direction across an organization, not just manage within a team.
How do I apply for Principal jobs at Riot Games?
You can browse and apply for Principal positions through Riot's careers site or find visa-sponsoring openings filtered by role level on Migrate Mate. Before applying, review the job description carefully for the specific discipline and team, since Principal roles at Riot vary significantly across engineering, product, and creative functions. Tailoring your application to the team's area of focus improves your chances of passing the initial review.
How do I manage timing between a Riot Games offer and my visa filing?
Once Riot extends an offer contingent on sponsorship, your immigration timeline becomes critical. For H-1B transfers or new filings, USCIS allows premium processing for a faster decision. If you're on OPT, confirm your grace period and cap-gap coverage. For TN or E-3, processing is typically faster and doesn't depend on an annual cap, which gives you more flexibility on start date negotiations with Riot.
